Such a fun song, I well remember it growing up and loved it then as well. Glad you pointed out Mitch’s A2, I don’t think most folks realize just how low that is for any tenor as it is only a 4th higher than what a chorister bass is expected to sing (E2). I value your analyses so much because I am deaf in one ear and have only 50% hearing left in my other ear so even with headphones I miss a lot. Even when you point things out I still have trouble hearing them sometimes so I enjoy hearing you use your own falsetto to phonate those very high notes. Along those lines I will say that whoever is singing that sustained E5 (I think it’s an E5) 3 or 4 times in the song is slightly flat (as if singing on the bottom half of the pitch, not a full semitone low). They do a better job of centering that pitch the last time they sing it. You likely know who is singing that, I don’t imagine it’s Mitch because he is pitch-perfect almost always and I suspect it is Scott who I have found at times to sing slightly under pitch. If you care to comment on that I’d be interested in hearing what you say. Awesome analysis as usual, really love, love, love how you break down the songs and voices! ❤😊

I’ve heard Mitch say he’s tired of only singing high notes. What I’ve noticed about Mitches voice is how clear he is. His words aren’t cut off they are full and crystal clear. Im not sure what you call it when someone sings a word that sounds like the actual word. I love Scott’s voice but he does it quite often. That sounds silly but I hope you know what I mean. ❤ love your reactions ❤
@Badger777225 ай бұрын
This is one of the few songs i know of where you really can get a good idea of not only how high and clear Mitch can go, but also just how LOW he can go, and it's nice to hear him showing us a sample of that. And he doesn't sound like he's really straining to hit either extreme - we know he's hit higher notes in other songs, but he doesn't often show us the lower limits of his voice. I have no problem watching you do an analysis with no music video to go along with it. Even with a music video, I'm watching you 90% of the time, because I've already seen the music video multiple (usually dozens, at least!) times, so just watching you 100% of the time is not a really big change for me!

Thank you Sir H! I was getting desperate for a PTX reaction! This was an interesting one given there is no video. Less of an issue with copyright I guess though! I love their version of this song. I was a big fan of Aha in the 80s. Someone I knew at school was Morton Harkett's cousin and a lot of my friends fancied him! 🙂The video for Take on Me, which is iconic, was so groundbreaking at the time. I really love what Pentatonix do with this one and you're right, having no video does make you really attune yourself to what they are singing. I think the embellishments and little vocal runs are great in this. I know everyone teases Scott for his obessions with runs and riffs but I do think in small amounts they can be very effective if done well (which obviously Scott does!). You spotted lots of things in the arrangement that I had heard and liked but didn't know why. That's the beauty of your reactions, they are so informative. Keep going! I'm looking forward in particular to Aha live in Singapore, Hallelujah, the Sound of Silence, Kiss from a Rose and The Prayer when you get close to Christmas (so you can do the Evergreen making of).

I agree, if you have Mitch use Mitch. Obviously Kevin, Scott and Kirstie can all get up high like Mitch, but to me Mitch has a tone and effortlessness that the others don’t. He seems to be able to sing full vocal lines and sentences where the others maybe do one or two notes up there. Plus he’s the most consistent up there. Especially during live singing.
@kristinewalberg29385 ай бұрын
One thing I've noticed about Mitch's voice is that he has virtually no passagio (basically, break) climbing up to his highest notes. Matt, Kevin and Scott may (possibly) go higher in their falsettos and, like Kirstie, are amazing singers in their own right, but Mitch can give us a beautiful string of effortless-sounding, uninterrupted, increasingly-higher notes, a talent I can't recall hearing from any other male singer. Add to that his apparent ability to hold those notes for what seems like forever with just as little obvious effort and no need to breathe, and it's easy to understand the theory that Mitch is actually an alien.

The original video was before AI and all of it was hand drawn, just like the old TV cartoons were done. Amazing. PTX's version is so bright, energetic and happy. I love their harmonies. I love hearing Mitch's low notes. He's just good all around. Don't pay any mind to us seeing just your face. I love your expressions, showing how you feel about the music you hear. So genuine and clear. Thanks for another Pentatonix reaction. The one non video song I love so much and would LOVE a reaction from you is named REF off of their Pentatonix Deluxe Edition album. And it's an ORIGINAL!

Great reaction! I love reactions to non video songs. I do think it helps to first see several videos so you know who is who ( usually) based on voice, which you have definitely done! I suggest Water as another non video option and it is an original ( it is on video in PopSpring 2016, which is 3 originals and the Evo of Michael Jackson live, but not a production video for Water) Water is an early Kirstie led song. Also originals from the same PopSpring 2016 are Cracked ( no official video) and Can’t Sleep Love, there is a video but it is much better live because in the live, well, Pentaholics know why. Maybe watch Pop Spring 2016? Great sound quality as it was recorded by MTV in Japan if memory serves me correctly. Also, seeing them do the Michael Jackson evo live is absolutely amazing

I agree with you on not always being crazy about Scott's riffs. His skill is indisputable, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with anything that he chooses to do musically; I simply would not always make the same choices (as if I had the ability). My taste is different. "Take on Me" is a near-perfect pop hit: memorable synth-y instrumentation, a vocal line that's catchy as Covid, and the necessary WOW! factor in that three-octave rising melody. (Lyrics may be the one weakness.) PTX reproduces everything that was wonderful about the original song and then ups the ante, most obviously by possessing a Mitchell Grassi for that WOW! line. Scott had a verse, and he sang it in his own inimitable style, and it was very good. I just didn't particularly like it; to me, it didn't seem to fit the genre and style of the original. By contrast, Scott's riffs in "Let's Get It On" are perfect.

Awesome reaction as usual! You're really great in "teaching" us things without sounding like an annoying teacher : - ) please, please do "Never gonna cry again", it's another one without a video and one of my absolute favs, Matt and Mitch (Match) are outstanding here

I don't mind it at all. One thing is the focus is just on the song. Two, there are so many great songs that don't have official videos. My favorite is "Praying".

Mitch is so remarkable in that first chorus! Thanks for pointing out Kevin's parts in the opening bars - I can hear it now. Now that you've cracked the video-less recordings, let's have Feel It Still. .

I can figure out the voices just listening the audio, but I prefer to see the videos 'cause I like to see them singing, is not a problem that doesn't have a music video though... Another one with Mitch low register is When the party's over, Billie Eilish's cover.

I would really suggest The Prayer and Amazing Grace. Both are done beautifully. And if you want a fun one Matt seems to have a blast in Mr. Grinch.

I always say Avi sounds more like a cello and Matt more like a bass guitar. 🤷♀️. They both fit different songs and it's special either way.

The only album I don't have of ptx is the At Home. I had a friend come over, and I was playing this album. She went crazy. But her favorite was bohemian rhapsody. We both love 80s music.

They never did a physical album of the home album. It’s all steaming so if you have a platform that you stream music from you definitely have access to it. It was just a quarantine project for them so they didn’t make the album to buy. Would definitely love to hear his take on Cologne from that album. The only one that didn’t get a video but I absolutely love what Matt and Kevin were able to do with it for a cappella.

Fun fact: While Mitch has occasionally sung lower in informal contexts, those A2s are the lowest Mitch has ever sung in an official Pentatonix arrangement up to now.

I can always distinguish between Avi and Matt. Both great but it’s easy to tell them apart. Not seeing them always throws me off even though they still sound great. Wonderful analysis as usual. In their documentary about the recording of their Evergreen album, there is a spot where Kirstie is belting and Kevin says to Mitch, “Since she’s belting, why don’t you sing her part. Then Mitch says, “yeah I’ll head voice it.” So they do interchange parts at times because of their range.
