Elvis was a perfectionist and wanted to be sure he got everything right. Everyone need's a little help now and then. The man who put Aloha together was in a panic when he discovered the show was 10 minute's short. Elvis wasn't worried he filled in the 10 minute's and the show was a great success, Elvis was and alway's will be the best!!!!! The first live show ever and aired in 36 country's with million's watching, I don't think anyone else has ever done that?

Good job! I would have never noticed that! And I never would have thought that Elvis would be so nervous about forgetting words to any songs, but then again, with as many songs as he put out, I can see how it would be easy to forget a line somewhere here and there. Just goes to show what a perfectionist Elvis was!

Elvis was a perfectionist and wanted to please his fans. I saw a rehearsal for Aloha where Elvis is arranging the song “It’s Over” with the backup singers. The last verses when he sings “walk the silent streets before me” he tells them to repeat the phrase “it’s over” after him, then he tells only the men to emphasize with him “realize our night” is over. I never noticed it before but when I watched the live version again I could see he looks back to make sure they repeat “it’s over” and also looks back to the guys to see them emphasize “realize our night”. It made me realize how much he cared about the performance. You can also see him look back on “what now my love” on the last dramatic verse “only my last goodbye” he looks back at someone, probably JD, as if to see if they approved of the note he hit. Ive seen that on other songs as well. Just makes him more lovable. Aloha was and is the biggest live world wide show ever and he killed it!

Elvis had thousands of songs running thru his head every day. He said in 1956 on an interview he knew every religious song there was. That was just the beginning of his life in the song business. I heard a lot of people in his mafia and others, such a Jerry Schilling say Elvis had a photographic memory. They said he could listen to a song 3 times and sing it from memory. He did this all day long. His song writers were amazed at this ability to memorize a song. But, I think, his stage fright over rode his confidence. But once he came on stage he was amazing. R.I.P ELVIS 👑💕

Elvis was very excited and very nervous about the concert be broadcasted live to 50 Countries. He wanted that more then special. Think about all the pressure that was on him. The News and the promoters of that event. Kept repeating no other Entertainer at that time, could of done what Elvis did. And when he announced how much money they had brought in. Elvis gave the credit to his fans. Elvis himself had stated, his goal was to give the most powerful concert. And have everyone enjoy the show and enjoy themselves. I kind of figured there were a lot of little tricks they did. Linda Thompson's Brother who ended up being put on Elvis Security Team. Had stated during an interview that there were several things they did, that the Audience / Fans didn't pick up on. He went on to say, remember at the end of all his concerts. Elvis would lose track on which way to go out. So once Elvis started bowing down to the Audience. Joe would flash a flash light on the floor of the stage, once Elvis would see the light from the flashlight. He would give a signal, usually still holding his hands out forward. Once he saw the light, he would keep moving towards where he saw the light. And usually just as Elvis was heading down the steps, Joe E. would be at the top waiting for Elvis to get closer, then he would go up and help Elvis to walk down the steps, so he wouldn't get hurt. Elvis had said many times that he was for getting the words to his songs. One thing I picked up on, when Elvis is performing and on certain songs, he would use his arms to let the drummer know, when he wanted the drummer to hit the thimbles. And when the Sweet Inspiration would join in. Once they joined in, Elvis would look over their way, with a smile and shake his head. Letting them know, they were right with him. During practice you can see and hear how Elvis had the ear to tell when something wasn't right or not in the right key. I'm sure you caught on to it. It sounded great to Us, but Elvis could always tell if someone was playing in the wrong key or singing in the right key. Elvis was very in tune to his band. I don't feel your disrespecting Elvis, when you share little things like that. Also in my opinion, I don't think it means Elvis was not professional. I see it the opposite. Because Elvis was so professional and had the ear to pick up on things. Just because from time to time he had to look for a sheet that Charlie would hold up, with the words to certain songs. Elvis was a perfectionist. After every concert as Elvis is walking through the Garages or trying to get to his Penthouse. He always asked his Guys, how was it? Was the sound quality good?. I appreciate all the research you do, pointing out little things Elvis did. Thank you again for all you do. Stay Safe. God Bless.

Brandon, did you see the concert when Elvis Started singing, Are You Lonesome Tonight. And he started off singing the second verse. He caught himself. And says to his band, wait a minute, that's not right. And then starts it over. Remember the one concert where Elvis felt he messed up big time. And he said oh he double hockey sticks, there goes 29 years straight down the ?. Then there was the concert, where Elvis just kept laughing. I don't think a fan in the World complained about any of those times. The Hawaii special meant a lot to Elvis, even though Hawaii is part of America. He felt he was representing America that night. That's why he had the suit done in red white and blue. And why he had the Eagle put on that suit. It was said that Elvis didn't want to insult anyone's feelings from all the other Countries. As we all know Elvis loved God, his Country and his Family. I don't know about others, but I liked when Elvis would kind of mess up. He always had a way to laugh it off, as if it was part of the show. And within minutes start off again, and belt it out. They made Elvis stay kind of tame compare to what others do today. Lisa recently shared something with Elvis and her fans. She said her favorite song was Separate Ways. She said her Dad told her, the second verse was written about her. Then she said, I just don't like the person who wrote it. He and his buddies know the real reason they were fired. So they wrote that book. They tried to destroy my Father's dignity. They hurt him really bad. She said she will never forgive them. Her Birthday just past Feb. 1. You can still see her pain from the lost of her Son.

Remembering words was an ongoing theme throughout Elvis's career. I think that at times he had such difficulty remembering words that he went ahead and shortened some songs. A good example is his studio release of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I thought it was kind of a shame that he left off the final verse because it was so beautiful. Several years later in 1976 he included it in the Burning In Birmingham concert when he was singing it to Ginger Alden before the entire crowd. "The first time, ever I lay by you, I felt your heart beat close to mine,"

Elvis had memory loss following a head injury that he suffered at his LA home in the late 60s. That's why he would forget the lyrics to songs including the simple line songs. But in Aloha he was nervous as hell. You can see it all the way to the end of the show. He was more concerned about screwing up (like normally on stage) in front of the entire planet instead of just going out and be himself. He was stiff as a board throughout that show. Nothing like what we see on 8mm from the November concert in Hawaii just two months earlier. He was under a lot of pressure that night.

During the Aloha Rehearsal Elvis got a lot of songs wrong, to begin with, in Burning Love he starts singing the ending of the second verse, and the rest of the song just gets really confusing, by Welcome To My World he sings lyrics that don't even exist in the song, so in the end he really needed the lyrics for songs he performed just a while back (My Way he started in August 4 1972), songs like Welcome To My World that he was performing for the first time, and even for songs that he was performing for a long time, all of this is completely understandable. Like it was said during the video, in the TTWII he had the sheet to the lyrics of some songs, and like I Just Cant Help Believing he even had to read the lyrics to Polk Salad Annie in the August 12 midnight show even though he was performing the song since January 1970

I believe Billy saying something about his hitting his head and they had to delay production on the movie for almost 2months and Parker came to see him telling him he had to go back because of his contract and Elvis went back. I've watched some of his rehearsals and he would get the lines out of order, but would realize it and stop the band and pick up where he was supposed to be or he'd have Charlie bring the song sheet over to him. He would change words to a song sometimes, but that was Elvis, or masking his disability? It doesn't matter to me because all the stuff health wise he was going through, I'm even More appreciative of him!

Jeez. How many songs did he record? 700 or better? Hard to remember every one perfectly. He was human. Made him more lovable & genuine. He made up for it with his connection to his fans & 110% + effort in every performance. Let's see how manyother performers could do with 2 shows a day almost everyday for 6 weeks at a time & then on your time off rehearse, record albums and search for new material. Don't know of any other performer that worked as hard as he did to his own detriment. God bless him for all he did. There will never be another like him. ❤

He was always so nervous before his shows because he wanted to give a good show and was so worried about forgetting the words to songs even though he had a photographic memory, and sang them so many times in rehearsals etc. He just never had confidence in himself. I forget which one of the guys said that before a show, it was like he was paralyzed before he went on stage and they had to give him a little push on the first step. Another time they couldn't find him and he was on his knees praying that he would give a good show. But once he was on stage, his whole persona changed into a confident performer! He never knew how great he really was! He considered himself to be lucky, maybe that's what kept him humble and appreciative. I'm just guessing.

Fun fact about "I just cant help believing". if you watch the video from TTWII, at 3:44 time stamp, Elvis and Charlie sings together. Elvis sing "When She Smiles... and whisper a magic" followed by a cute laughter like "I knew it was going to happen" . You can hear Charlie singing the correct lyrics "when she's whispering ..." being aware of Elvis switching lyrics and instead of dropping off completely he blurs the lyrics so the harmony stays there supporting the main melodic line leaving Elvis free to sing whatever. CHARLIE Hodge was like a shadow that arrives ahead instead of following. The whole band if you pay attention to any live show have EYES and EARS glued to Elvis. Elvis had always an ear on Charlie Hodge too. Examples of great musicianship here folks!

I read that Marlon Brando often could not memorize the dialogues of his movies too, so they wrote the dialogues on the card for him. Well, one reason is that there was no playback at the time, everything that happened was completely live and real, the other reason is the lyrics of Elvis songs, often not simple and easy words, but meaningful and sometimes complex words. I think no matter how strong we see him, but as a human being he eventually became stressed and eager, it's good you're talking about these things, the thing I learned about Elvis fans is that, like other artist fans, they are not They are not extremists or fanatics, they are realistic, punctual and witty like Elvis.

I just caught that! I've been watching videos of that concert for over 40 yrs now, and I never saw Charlie's reaction until just now! It's not a closeup of Charlie, though. In fact, Charlie is still singing harmony for Elvis on the final bar of "Can't Help Falling In Love" when Elvis flings his cape into the audience. They dissolve to a closeup of Elvis as he kneels, acknowledges the audience, looks back at his band, then they cut to a wide shot of the band, and Charlie puts his hand on his head, as if to say, "WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST SEE? DID ELVIS THROW THAT EXPENSIVE CAPE INTO THE AUDIENCE?" A classic moment in Elvis history. Thanks for the heads up, I'll always look for this memorable image from now on, whenever I watch "Aloha From Hawaii"!

When he sings it, AWESOMELY by the way, on, Elvis in Concert, he uses the sheet music and tells the audience that he doesn't know the words, to excuse his using the sheet, but then, near the end, pardon the pun,, he doesn't need it, but he glances at it JUST to make sure, and a lot of other songs are BASICALLY ingrained, but, even during the '68 Special while performing, Jailhouse Rock, an alternate performance, he messes up a little part and shows the slip up with his own and unique ELVISY type of smile/reaction!!!!!!! P.S.-During TTWII he is really worried about forgetting the words to, I Just Can't Help Believing, and tells one of the people in the "group" (Backup singers???), about it live on camera, OH, thanks a lot for the video, it's unbelievable, after ALL of these years, and you see something that you've never noticed before!!!!!

I noticed in the Aloha rehearsal concert Elvis made a mistake in the I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry song, in the beginning, he sang "Hear that lonesome whippoorwill He sounds too blue to die" when it should have been "He sounds too blue to fly." I don't know if too many people noticed, I haven't seen any comments about it but he fixed it and said "fly" in the actual show that was broadcast by satellite the next night. I am always amazed that Elvis and other singers can remember so many songs. I literally can't remember a single song the whole way through.

@@jrc8640 hey stranger, good to hear from you. All is well for now, and I hope all is well on your side of the pond? Yeah, I have always wondered about this, especially with "My Way" every concert he ever sang that song he needed a sheet or card to remember the words, so I don't understand it, and I know he had some short term memory issues after his bathtub incident in 1967 but I'm not sure that lingered for another decade. When doing his first movie in 1956 the director was pleased when Elvis showed up to his first shoot not needing cards or the script to get through his lines for the day. Then, he was dumfounded, when he discovered that Elvis had memorized the entire script, and not just his lines, but everyone's. Then when recording songs, on some he would do 25-30 takes, and then tell the producer to go with track 11, that he liked it a little better than track 26 and track 4. Then at the ladder part of his career he couldn't remember lines to some songs and needed assistance with cards or sheets.

Well spotted: I never noticed that myself. To be fair to EP, the guy had hundreds of lyrics spinning in his brain, not just his own songs but also the gospel stuff he sang with his pals while relaxing. According to Larry Geller, Elvis was gifted with a photographic memory and memorized a page just by reading it. There is of course the famous story of his first movie 'Love me Tender' or 'The Reno Brothers' when EP showed up on the first day having memorized the whole script . During the seventies he sadly became a heavy consumer of prescription drugs which no doubt badly impacted his memory. I'm sure the fifties 'wild cat' needed no prompter while performing on the Louisiana Hayride! Pity there is hardly any TV footage of him performing on stage before he rose to international stardom.

How many singers can stand on stage in front of thousands of people holding a lyric sheet -- AND say that they may goof it up. Only that man could do it & it was so normal & natural for him.
