The showrunners changed the way that the fungus spreads so that it would be more believable and terrifying. In the games, the fungus spreads through spores in the air, but in the show, they decided to have them spread through tendrils. Also, when Pedro Pascal found out about getting the role of Joel, he sat down and watched his nephew play the beginning of the game since he wasn’t skilled enough to play it himself. He was so impressed with the character, but he wanted to keep a healthy distance from the games. So, he allowed the showrunners to create the characterization for him.

Cinematically wise: So the actors don’t have to consistently wear masks. Believability wise: Spores don’t stay confided in small spaces, they go wherever the wind takes them. If the infection is caused by spores, there would be no survivors, unless you wore a gas mask 24/7.

If you did some research on cordyceps that’s what a fungus is long leg looking tentacles that actually move and spread. The fungus infects ants and bugs and grows out of the ants heads with a long tentacle structure. The insides of the ant are slowly eaten away and it’s body is filled with the fungus. In episode 2 when the scientist lady cuts open the dead woman’s leg and it filled with fungus is pretty accurate to what happens to ants and other bugs and insects. So it’s pretty believable.

I think they messed up with taking away the spores infecting through the air. They should have kept that in and have both. I agree, I enjoy the show for what it is but a few things are baffling. Bill being dead before Joel and Ellie even arrive, skipping Ellie having to save him from Bills trap. They skipped the dam defense level to get the dam operational. The settlement is already developed. And Joel getting impaled is way weaker in the show and Bella Ramsay’s acting during that part was so stale and emotionally devoid. They haven’t built Ellie’s character at all 7 episodes in she still acts like a child

They change things because video games work differently than tv shows. In the game you kill over 10 people to get to the other level, the action is only there to advance the story. Also in the game you heal bullet holes with alcohol and rags, so Joel falling one story on to a metal spike is more believable. But in the show it’s more grounded in reality. Nobody can kill hundreds of people and heal bullet holes that easily so they skip that and focus on the story

If you watched it wanting to see basically just the game then there would be alot of drawn out parts for a series, parts where Joel should've died, and much more content to try shove in. Bill being dead is just a side story, still making him a good character, Ellie saving Joel from the trap would just be too unbelievable, Joel wouldn't have enough accuracy and would immediately get bit if they want to make it realistic. I would say that you can’t directly translate a video game into a TV show especially if it’s for people that don’t play games. I would say that the of the changes made were for the better in contacts that you were making it for a more general audience. As for people who already play the game, I would say, its usually a much nicer experience you don’t know everything that is going to happen. A few new surprises here and there, maybe some character changes, just so they don’t get bored either.

Not having spores and not needing masks dents the game’s story by a lot, for example in tlou2, shamblers let out spores when they die or are pretty close to non infected. And in tlou1 and 2, Ellie introducing her secret of not being infected to joel and Dina. So not having spores and masks is a massive mistake imo. Nah Fr, I love love the show. Changing things up here and there actually keeps the audience on their toes to see the way the characters adapt to this lifestyle. If they really wanted everything to be EXACT then Joel would be crouching every 5 seconds. Also, they did a pretty damn good job keeping the story really close to the games storyline, which many shows don’t end up happening. So people are just weird for hating on it
