@Jaysennx3 Yes, that's the point of the show with no context. But remember, everything needs context, especially when their about to get married and spend time with each other outside of this. If their ways of living and beliefs clash, then one might just end up in an unhappy compromise, or there will be constant disagreements on how to navigate. Imagine they choose to have kids, the amount of problems that will arise cause they can't agree how to navigate culturally will be a lot.

A true definition of a “Mutt” is a derogatory term because it stems from the idea that mixing, whether breeds of dogs or races of people, can result in lowering standards, inferiority, or just being stupid because they are not considered pure. Most people use it to refer to the multiple races a person is. I've never heard it used offensively, and I mainly hear people calling themselves Mutts jokingly after sharing all their races that they are mixed with. It did give me a little pause because it was my first time hearing a white man saying it to black women, but also with more context. If they have been talking for a while before that and gained some form of comfort, I don't think it would be offensive to her. It wouldn't sit right with me but I’m not surprised that it wouldn't bother others

I will say, when he said mutt, I had to rewind it back and listen again. I was shocked when I heard it, because my mother is mixed race, with a darker skin tone, and grew up in an extremely racist area, where mutt was screamed at her and her siblings, as a racist term. We are Canadian, and my mom grew up in the back country, in foster care, with her and her two sisters being the only people of colour in the entire community. The stories I’ve heard are sickening, and unbelievable, so hearing that term threw me for a loop. I am not sure if that term is more wildly acceptable in different areas of the world?

The "Mutt" thing.....I had to really think about this because I've always called myself a "mutt" and I had a negative feeling when he said it. I think it's because, I'm white, a mix of a whole bunch of vague European-ish, and I've always used that term to express something I don't really love about my ethnicity. I don't love that I can't take pride in where I come from, and I've always been attracted to people whose ethnicity is an actual, tangible part of their identity. It's a healthy, beautiful thing to feel like you know who you are and where your ancestors come from. I never had the opportunity to identify myself with a culture, other than just, I'm a white girl....nothing to be excited about. So I felt the sting, cuz calling someone a mutt is like saying, not only do you not take pride in your heritage, you don't even KNOW your heritage. That's my reality, and it's not ideal. But then he backtracked to say it about himself, which I think is a reflection of the fact that he once didn't know for sure about himself and now he has something to be proud of. He's vacillating because his ethic identity is in flux. Understandable. Having said that, we should probably all stop using that term flippantly unless we are talking about our own feelings about our own experience, because it's is not a compliment and it's doesn't add anything positive to our identity. It doesn't take away our value as a human, of course! But it makes us orphans in a way and that's kind of a hardship I wouldn't want to apply to someone when I'm more inclined to want to view their ethnicity as something they should be super proud of!

Mutt is not a derogatory term or àtleast shouldn't be to anyone. It just means that you are mixed with a lot of different things. I am someone mixed with 4 races , so am referred to as a mutt a lot and I don't take it as an offense at all. I am what would be considered a 'mutt'. Thats totally fine

21:50 "Mutt" is something I have referred to myself as since I was young. I am from Oklahoma USA and our history is complex. I thought it was very funny to respond this because it was my version of when I asked my grandma what native American tribes we were - she would throw her arms up and in a mexican accent say, "Ai, hita who knows?!" But it was something I came up with because I knew I was a mixture of native American Mexican and European+ and it was just too much of a mouthful. But people were so offended (for me) when I said it that I gradually stopped😂 I understand taking more pride in it but at the same time in this melting pot who isn't, and why shouldn't I be proud of that❤

Okay, so I never knew people considered "mutt" derogatory like that. My mom's family is a mix from all over Eurasia, plus native American. So she & I both always say that her family is "American mutt mix". Maybe it's because we're around a lot of animal lovers / shelter workers so we don't think of mutts as bad? (Fun fact: mutt dogs usually have less health issues than purebreds.) On my other side, my dad is 50/50 Scottish & French, so his background's easier to explain. 😅

I don’t think the term “mutt” is derogatory from my opinion it’s usually referred to a mixture of many things, BUT I can see how some may not like it, I just wouldn’t make it as deep as it is

I have heard people casually refer to themselves as mutts after explaining that they're a mix of many different ethnicities. It's kind of used as the punchline after naming a looong list of ethnicities.

On dating a Trump supporter: I remember when my long-term then-boyfriend said he didn't like Obama and would vote for Trump, I replayed the reel of our entire relationship in a new light. He had always been supportive of women's rights, worked for the LGBTQ+ services, SA services, and International services at our uni, been open-minded to other perspectives; a kind and patient man. So I asked some follow-up questions: it turns out that he thought Trump was despicable and the only reason he would have voted for him was because of Trump's views/opinions on what to do in the Middle East. My boyfriend (now husband) is from Iraq and believes Obama made the situation over there so much worse, whereas Trump had a better grasp on what to do. 🤷♀ ... and that's it. It should be noted that we're both Canadian and my bf wouldn't have been able to vote in the US elections anyway. And also that he clarified that if they could only vote on one topic of their choosing (i.e. international politics in the M-E), he would have voted for Trump but otherwise Trump was too much of a hot mess and a joke and a ticking time bomb to actually be in office. Still, all of his family and many of his friends are in Iraq/the M-E and he feels so helpless with what's going on over there. It made me rethink how I approach Trump supporters, and maybe I shouldn't immediately write them off.

Its because of our awful two party political system. I feel like if everyone took a political survey and could vote strictly based off policy, no one would truly support either candidate. Picking someone to vote for when there are only two options is very difficult and I really don't think people should be so judgemental about it. We're all human and we all have nuisanced beliefs about how this country should be run.

@thequeene Mutt is not derogatory. Back in the day 70's 80's if a person was mixed nationality, they would say they were mutts. (This was usually said in the Italian community) I went to high school in an Italian community and heard this alot when they were not 100% Italian. Steven did not mean any harm by saying that.
