For Hans' death scene, Alan Rickman was told he would be dropped on a count of three, but he was let go earlier to elicit a genuine look of surprise. The director, John McTiernan said, "there's no way he could fake that". For other McTiernan-Films (you already watched _Predator_ and _Last Action Hero,_ I believe), I can recommend _Hunt for Red October_ and _The 13th Warrior._ And a Bruce Willis-Movie I can absolutely recommend is _The Fifth Element._

This is the movie that made Willis an action star. Before this he know as a comedic actor from Moonlighting. A great dramedy series that was on network tv. This also started a new trend in action movies if the hero being an everyman, average joe type, as opposed to the Rambo and Commando types of the 80's. This is definitely a Christmas movie and one of the greatest action films ever made, period. Great reaction.

Better yet, he auditioned to play Riggs in Lethal Weapon and Mel Gibson ended up getting the role. Bruce Willis got this part a few months later. 3 criteria for a Christmas movie: 1) needs to take place on or around Christmas. 2) needs to have Christmas references (music, Santa, decorations, etc). 3) needs to have the Christmas spirit. Die Hard clearly has the first two, and I argue it has the third because he flew out to California to try to save his marriage and he’s kinda doing all this for his wife. That’s why I’ve argued that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. My second favorite behind It’s a Wonderful Life.

Alan Rickman's breakout role, I think this was his first major movie. You need to remember that Hans is a bit of a showman and a bullsh1tter, he is playing terrorist for the authorities, so they won't see what he is really up to or after, it was all part of the plan, but as they said in one of the advertisements for this movie, it was the perfect plan, and then...someone stole his detonators. Plus...RIP to the guy that played the hacker, he passed away recently.

You kind of talked over the explanation of John & Holly's relationship "status". Argyle had successfully guessed that John simply stayed in NYC because he didn't think Holly would be successful in California & wanted to maintain their "Home" in NY for when she "came back". They are living separately but are not legally "separated". (no paperwork filed; no divorce lawyers hired or anything) You can tell that they both LOVE each other very much, but that SHE is hurt that he didn't have faith in her & HE is hurt that she chose her career over her husband. As a result, their hurt feelings & PRIDE are keeping them from sitting down and having the simple conversation needed to fix & establish their marriage's new situation. (where the WHOLE family is going to live, who is going to do what, and so on) Lack of honest, unemotional communication screws up so many things IRL that it makes it all the more believable for the audience. Just as John starting an argument after Holly offered an "olive branch" to him was. So was his verbally BERATING himself for his own stupidity & lack of emotional control. (Despite it being normal & completely understandable)
@Polymathically Жыл бұрын
You probably already know the major fun facts, but here are a few more from the director's commentary. He was very worried about the rooftop sequence, particularly about having that many people standing underneath a real hovering helicopter. He knew that one mistake could kill a lot of people, so he called it off after only two fly-bys. Hence why you don't get a good look at the roof from the helicopter until after it's evacuated. Also, the roof explosion wasn't done with a miniature; to get the scale, they set up a camera 5 miles across the city. The director's favorite moment is the elevator "ding" right before it explodes. Bruce Willis suffered permanent 2/3rds hearing loss in his left ear after shooting that one terrorist through the table. Also, Alan Rickman's "Alas, your Mr Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life" and chowing down at the buffet table was ad-libbed. Same goes with Al Leong, the guy who munched on a candy bar while waiting for the police infiltration.

Die Hard is hands down among my top favorite movies. Its nearly perfect in every way, from early on how they set up things that call back to later on, even the whole "take your shoes off and make fists with your toes on the carpet", like just taking the shoes off for John really had a detrimental effect. Plus a bunch of other things. Gotta also love how they always portray the cops and the FBI in movies back then as complete idiots that make matters worse! haha

This was an awesome movie when it came out - for a change it gave an edge of reality and high stakes which broke away from many tropes which had suffused movies such as this. The hero suffered, the villains were core smart and ruthless. This was Bruce's first real movie coming from the comedy adventure show MOONLIGHTING which was something of a harder edged switch up from sarcastic detective David Addison. Great stuff, and hard to believe that it's 34 years old.. I remember seeing this at the cinema like it was yesterday. The sequels are fine.

The movie was based on the novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which was released in 1979, is a sequel to his 1968 novel The Detective with Frank Sinatra. The ending a lot more darker than the movie: SPOILERS! As Hans Gruber uses Holly as a bullet shield, McClane shoots him in the chest and falls through the window, but not before he grabs Holly by her sweater resulting to have them in falling to their deaths. Karl survives and begins shooting at reporters and police with an M-60 machine gun. Powell grabs an M-16 Rifle and kills Karl. McClane gets hit in the leg by Karl, and is taken away in an ambulance but sadly dies of his injuries.

Director John McTiernan's next film after Predator (1987) and loosely based on the Roderick Thorp novel, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (1979). This film was a gamechanger of the action genre for it's time. Many copycats were made. Some were good and some weren't. Bruce Willis in his 3rd film role after releasing an album called "The Return of Bruno" and finishing his 5-season run on the TV series, "Moonlighting". Willis as McClane was known as America's unluckiest cop. But as an flawed and relatable character, it made him beloved as an action hero. The late, Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) in his first feature film redefined onscreen villains. He is one of several actors in the film who've passed away. This was a summer blockbuster (June of '88). As it takes place during Christmas, it's only been seen as an Christmas film. There are 4 sequels in the DH franchise as 2-4 are pretty good. The 5th and final installment is very debatable. Bruce Willis retired from acting, early 2022 after he was diagnosed with Aphasia. His career reads over 100 roles, mostly films and some television. But as Detective John McClane, he'll never be forgotten. Yippee-ki-yay motherf******.
