Fun fact: Kuvira is played by Robin Williams's daughter, Zelda Williams. Kuvira's character also resembles her voice actress. Interestingly, Zelda's mother also has a beauty mark on her cheek similar to Kuvira's. Bryan Konietzko, one of the creators, incorporated the beauty mark into Kuvira's design so that people would notice her during her background appearances for Book Three.

Especially when you're as young as the main characters are. Maybe they forget but Mako, Bolin, Asami and Korra started the show as teens. Now by season 4 I do think they are in their early 20s to late teens, but 3 years of that short life span is quite big and significant. The older you get the less 3 years seems to be. But for were they are at especially its a huge deal.

The main villains make up for the shows shortcomings. Their goals felt so personal to Korra and by extension the audience. Amon attacked her sense of identity, Unalaq the spirituality of the avatar, and the Red Lotus attacked her purpose; leading Korra’s physical, mental, and spiritual health being severely damaged. Personally while the structure of ATLA was far more cohesive, the more personal villains are what made TLoK my preferred show of the two. Everyone can relate to having doubts and questioning one’s self worth and identity, whether through external elements or one’s own negativity and in this season in particular watching Korra’s continued character growth and perseverance is encouraging in the face of so much fear and doubt in the world and in one’s personal life.

I just realized something. Korra takes place 70 years later after the original series. She was 17 when she came to Republic City and 18 years old during season 2 and 3. Then the three year time skip happen and she's 21 years old now. So that mean it's been 73 years since then. Sozin's comet appears once every 100 years right so that means there's 27 years left before it returns. So Korra being 21 plus the 27 years later, means she will be 48 years old by then! Imagine how powerful she will be since her go to element is fire 🔥🔥

The thing I hope people remember with the writing this season is that this stuff is super obvious to us as grown ass adults with a western liberal education. But this is a world that's basically only had monarchies and dictators and is used to deferring to a strong presence. The United Republic is the first real instance of democracy. Now. Look. Kuvira is a fascist, it's bad. But we KNOW earth kingdom bureaucrats abuse their power and their station and control the flow of goods and even food to their citizens. In theory, Her withholding distribution to the local governments and instead insisting on direct aid to citizens actually kinda makes sense. I think they did a kinda half assed job writing in the nuance of how people fall for fascism. It seems obvious to us as the audience, but in context, it's suggested that Kuvira starts as fundamentally trying to spread the wealth and privilege of the metal clan to the rest of the country and realizes she's lost in a lawless quagmire and becomes hardened and self important over time.

- Milo is too frickin' cute. I love how the drawings behind him went from childish messy drawings to BIG SCARY MONSTERS. - One of the train bandits sounded like Korra! Maybe the voice actor was doing some extra work? - The sky bandits were super bold and daring for people can't airbend. Just hanging on a rope? If Kai sliced that, the guy would've fallen to his death. And remember when Aang sliced a buzzard wasp in half? The airbenders are NOT being as lethal as they could be.

SPOILER: It's never revealed if Kuvira was paying the bandits. And I think it's better that way. It keeps things ambiguous. Ultimately, it doesn't matter if she is or isn't forcing things to happen by creating or worsening problems so she can come in and solve them. Either way she's preying on innocent, desperate people to achieve power.

You girls are now into TLoK's final Book/season. I hope it's been a good ride for you guys. 😃 At this point of the show, there were a few recurring themes in-show and with its fanbase. Among them were that 1) For the third time in four Books/seasons, Bolin jumped on the wrong side of the conflict (Triple Threat Triads in Book 1, Varrick in Book 2, and now Kuvira in Book 4), and 2) a certain segment of the fanbase were, disturbingly, completely on the sides of Amon, the Red Lotus, and now Kuvira. Anyways, I'm still hoping y'all decide to catch Republic City Hustle.

Lin Beifong tells the prince "your chances of getting assassinated are almost zero" because there is a non-zero chance that she will kill him herself. I think both of you are right about Kuvira.... not so much with the cult, but more along the lines of expansionist fascism. Nazis were a good example of that! Really enjoying your commentary as well! I've wondered about that kind of situation. Cops being arbitrarily reassigned because of some diplomat. I mean I understand that transfers happen all the time; Older cops retire and younger cops move up to fill their post; sometimes a position on a team or task force will open up and said team will recruit from among other departments ans sometimes even other precincts. But can a politician really just arbitrarily go OVER the Chief's head and reassign their cops without even asking them?? Although I suppose I may have answered myself seeing as Wu and Ryko are Heads of State. Yeah Lin even said that Wu wen over her head and went straight to Ryko. I'm just surprised that's even possible, is all I mean.

It did a specific close up on her when she introduced herself because it was showing that she was important, and then this season now she is the antagonist. It’s nice bit of foreshadowing.

So it's nice you caught the comparison of Kuvira and her Earth Empire being analog's to Nazi Germany. However that's not the direct comparison it's going for, rather Kuvira is very evocative of Mussolini. He was also a fascist dictator during WW2 who allied with Nazi Germany. While there are a lot of similarities, there are also differences.

Amon believed bending was the source of the world's injustice and saw his own bending as necessary evil to rid the world of a greater evil. Unalaq wanted to create complete spiritual harmony for both worlds and was too arrogant to see that he couldn't control Vaatu. Zaheer wanted a stateless world where people form their own communities and rule themselves, but was too zealous to see the flaws of his insurrectionary ideal. Kuvira wanted to pull her nation from its backwater structure and turn it into a superpower. She never contradicted her values.
