Someone pointed out something that never really thought of when I watched korra crying at the end of season 3 and her not being her self. They explained that she was crying because she felt that she wasn't needed as avatar and was being replaced when the air bender nation took on her role. The whole season 3 was her trying to help and republic city turning their back on her, not needing her. What I thought she was going through was that the trauma was finally starting to hit at the end of season 3. Each villain had taken or were capable of taking things from her. Amon took her bending and seemed permanent, unalock ripped raava out of her, Zaheer took her avatar state. On top of that, she lost the connection to past avatars and almost lost the avatar cycle twice. It all showed she really isn't invincible even in the avatar state. I thought it all caught to her when Ginora said whats wrong we got all the metal out of her. Not only that the role of the avatar to resolve issues has to be the avatar. Its calling back to Iroh, saying it has to be the avatar and not him to take out Oazi otherwise the world might not see it as peacful. Its similar to Kuvira and Su, leaders trying to take out other out. Korra being the way she is, she can't even beat Kuriva. She's not the same girl she was in season one and two. So, trauma and sad role being replaced or incapable

I hate this episode because it shows how dumb our heroes are. Kuvira showed up with an army, gave a time limit for them to hand over the city. They proceeded to violate the truce and then Korra proceeds to walk out here with the argument of it’s not the right thing to do. Kuvira has all the leverage in this situation and was kind enough to throw it away and at the end still win. Korra has no leverage, came out here with no plan or idea to set up any kind of agreement to make both sides happy. At the end of the day Zaofu was doomed the second Suyin and Korra tried to fight Kuvira.

But that's exactly why you should like this episode. Kuvira has called out Suyin multiple times for being a self-centered leader. Su doesn't care about her people, or Zaofu, she's just salty that Kuvira was right. Even Lin called out Su's character in Season 3. If Su had stepped up like she was asked, then none of the Earth Empire stuff would've happened. She tried to take the easy way out - a staple of Su's character - and threw everything away. The fight between Korra and Kuvira? Su's just saying to go Avatar state and kill her immediately. She doesn't care about Korra's safety or a strategy - just kill Kuvira. Kuvira was unironically right about Su and Zaofu. You need to stop thinking of Su as being a "good guy" just because she was friendly with our protagonist in Season 3.

@@WangFire Yeah I completely agree with you on how bad of a person Su is. And I do like the episode for the parts you just laid out. My problem with the episode is how dumb it makes Korra and Su’s family look, because they couldn’t get past their personal feelings about Kuvira and at least come up with some sort of a compromise. And this is a writing problem that bleeds into a character problem. There has not been enough evidence to presume that Kuvira wouldn’t be open to some sort of a compromise but the characters of the story push it to a point that says “we have to solve this issue with violence,” when at the end of the day they’re finding this situation hard to deal with because they can’t. Then Kuvira proceeds to give them an opportunity to solve it through violence and they fail. And Korra failing to solve it this way doesn’t feel natural to the story at all. You can see the hand of the author in that moment. We’re halfway through the season and the main character and the main antagonist are fighting. The main character has a win button that they can push and the antagonist allows it, but when it’s pushed it’s stop by a character moment (that I don’t want to spoil) that comes out of nowhere and causes the main character to lose. As the audience we know that Korra can’t win yet but she should be able to so when she lost like this it highlights a big writing problem that states that they walked up to a dictator who has an army behind them. Said “I know you want this city and you have all this leverage against us to obtain it and you’re really mad because an attempt on your life was just made by the city’s leader. Now we have exactly what you want and we also have no cards to play against you. Give up on what you want because we want you to, there was never even a thought that we can compromise with you.” They did all that, got lucky that Kuvira didn’t immediately charge in. And then hitched their bets on 1 v 1 that was never guaranteed. That’s just about the height of dumb character writing and decision that I can take. It’s one thing to be over emotional about something you believe in, it’s another to go to war with no battle strategy at all and expect to win.

⁠@@machmach2461 Kuvira wasn’t interested in compromise. As soon as Bolin failed to convince Su to hand over the city she immediately threatened to take it by force. She wasn’t going to accept anything other than full surrender. Also what the hell else was Korra supposed to do? She had literally just gotten back from a 3 year sabbatical where she had to work through physical and mental trauma and you’re going to call her dumb for not being able to quickly think of a way to compromise with a dictator? She tried to be as diplomatic as she could because she didn’t want to be the same hothead she was as a teenager. Just because she failed doesn’t make it bad character writing. Su acting the way she did also makes sense with what’s been established about her character. She thinks highly of herself and is not above breaking the rules. And while there is a certain amount of selfishness on her part, it’s also unfair to claim she had an obligation to lead an army to Ba Sing Se and appoint herself interim ruler over the entire kingdom. I wouldn’t want that job either. I swear people turn their brains off when they try to criticize this show.

So, in that one moment when Su scans the tent and says "She's alone in there.". Did anybody else feel like Toph would have KNOWN it wasn't Kuvira?? I'm just saying, even when Lin did that trick she removed her boot and used her bare foot. It could just be that the writers didn't know that it was a Toph thing so they didn't bother with Su using her bare foot, but it could also be that trying to sense through her boot didn't give her all the info she needed.

Possibly? Toph’s seismic sense would obviously be stronger than her daughters’ because she relied on it. However even Toph couldn’t tell the exact details of people’s faces (she tells Katara she has no idea what she looks like.) If Kuvira and Zhu Li had similar height, weight, and body shape it might be hard to tell them apart while they’re in bed and not moving.

As much as i thought Kuvira was the lamest vilain of the show and the mech stuff coming in season 4 was dumb as fuck and totally ruined the avatar universe... @@artistfloor9 i just don't think the universe needed mecha when there's already so much cool stuff you can do with bending and even the spirits themselves ... Like people complained about the spirit godzilla stuff from the end of season 2 but to me the mecha stuff just feels so out of place ^^' To me it feels like those Dragon ball Z and naruto issues where it just has to get "bigger" everytime until it just looks ridiculous ^^ And having final fights using bending like the ones with Ozai or Zaheer just feel so much more epic than having giant robots shooting laserbeams like that doesn't feel like avatar at all to me xD But just my opinion of course i just don't think the show needed mecha stuff at all especially since Kuvira is a pretty dope fighter herself

@@METerrell I did notice actually. Just like I notice how people keep making excuses that are just a form of accepting mediocrity. Korra is not the "bad bitch" people claim her to be. When Tarloq calls herva half-baked Avatar, that's not a roast or just being an add. He's absolutely right. Korra should have been a great deal more powerful than she is. Everyone keeps saying "The World has advanced in Korra's time so bending isn't really a factor anymore. Of course she has to adapt.'. But that bullshit. The World has NOT evolved Republic City has. The rest of the world is exactly as it was in Aang's time. They are now able to enjoy travelling to Republic City, getting some trade and goods, but the rest of the World isn't different. The bottom line is that writing into her character that she's just great at bending for no reason DOES NOT make her great by extension. It actually limits her. If the story had had Korra travelling the world looking for Masters and not the scrubs from the White Lotus, she may have been an Avatar worthy of the title. But instead the writers have her an amplified version of all the worst qualities of each bender she was introduced with. She's impulsive and quick to violence (fire); she'd emotionally immature and unstable (water); and she's utterly arrogant and ignorant (earth). She NEVER ONCE learns any kind of Airbender philosophical traits. She JUST SUDDENLY has the ability to Airbend. Because the plot needs her to. She didn't get some huge epiphany or open her mind to anything, no. All she had was "boyfriend in trouble; girl boss needs to win.". Someone who philosophically CAN'T seperate bending from fighting has no business being The Avatar. And for everyone who keeps saying that Korra has evolved and grown because now she's trying to TALK to Kuvira instead of rushing in guns blazing. She hasn't.to use your own argument, she's still recovering from emotional and physical traa and she KNOWS Kuvira will kick her ass. That's not growth. It's an excuse to blame something other than Korra's lack of skill for her loss.

Maybe Kuvira is, quite frankly, BETTER than Korra. Korra didn't just lose. She got humiliated. Sure, one could argue that she STILL has issues to work out. But consider that even Amon laughed in her face and humiated her; and that was when she WAS on top of her game. He schooled her without even bending. And that was when she HAD all her past lives to help. Then getting schooled AGAIN by her uncle with her own native element, and THEN by a dude who JUST LEARNED Airbending. I mean, Korra isn't giving The Avatar a good name now is she??

Kuvira is an amazing metal bender and is even more threatening because of the political power she holds, but she is not stronger than Korra. Korra would have defeated her in the Avatar state if it wasn’t for her mental block. Kuvira knows how strong Korra is, but she was banking on the fact that there must be something wrong with her if she hasn’t done anything to interfere with Kuvira’s takeover the past 3 years. I don’t understand this criticism that Korra is a weak, sh*tty Avatar because she doesn’t just stomp all her enemies. She’s an incredibly powerful bender, so there has to be stuff holding her back in order for there to be conflict. She needs to face obstacles for there to be a story.

Also Kuvira isn't threatening because of her political power, because she actually has none. What she has is Military Power. Her personal army rivals that of the New Republic Army led by Iroh. Politics is not a factor. And just for the record, yes Korra IS a shitty Avatar. She was never taught what bending is actually about. It's insulting that she equates bending to fighting. As if that's all it's good for. Like I already said Kuvira didn't just beat her, she toyed with Korra. The entire fight. You can literally see her smiling. Korra has NOTHING on Kuvira. Korra's issue is she was very poorly written. Her most powerful bending is her native one and she almost never uses it. Yes I know she was fighting Kuvira in a field with no water, but she's the Avatar. She SHOULD be smart enough to at least carry some with her at all times. Even Katara started doing that. The only time Korra ever shows any kind of real power is when the plot needs her to win the fight. With the exception of fighting Zaheer. He edged her up permanently. Other than that. She's never shown ANY Avatar qualities. Other benders were terrified fighting Roku, Aang, Yangchen & Kiyoshi. No one would ever DARE any of them to go into the Avatar State. And let's be honest here, Just because Korra pushed Kuvira back with Air that does not mean she was winning. Kuvira's an Earthbender; do you really believe she couldn't have stopped Korra and those boulders?? You think Kuvira got lucky because Korra freaked out at the last second?? Well, to quote Cameron Mitchell (Stargate GG-1) "Lucky IS good.".

You're underestimating the avatar role on korra's era. First of all, the avatar it's not relevant there anymore, if you read the novels, You've noticed the actual power of the avatar was political, people feared them not Because of strength but Because of politic issues. Kyoshi had to fought benders more powerful than her and lost or felt helpless, yangchen's biggest enemies were fucking merchants she Didnt have to fight but trick with politics. That's where the real avatar power comes, from it's divinity and relevance to the people. Avatars do have the power, but they just can't go killing people and the world knows it, that's why we have villains like Kuvira, Jianzhu, Long Fen, who have the Upper hand Because they know the avatar can't kill them or else their reputation falls and taint the avatar legacy. A Lot of avatars Lost fights, Korra Lost Kuvira, Aang against Azula, Kyoshi against Jianzhu, Because it's called fucking character growth.
