Did my last in frame on 12.7 series 60. OEM Reman head, injectors, bullgear N Fp diesel cylinder kit. Did do counterbores. I chose a small shop( no warranty, but I'm happy with work they did).Almost a yr n 100k miles on n no issues. I guess it all comes down to how much u pay for overhaul or in frame. If I'm to pay extra for warranty, I might just order a crate motor from manufacturer.

Rebuild a 12.7 series 60 pre egr, even if u can find a truck from scrap and do all frame and cab work. It's worth it.

@@jotz007 CA already started the phase out. All truck by 2025 must be newer then 2011 or have DPF and DEF retrofitted. Other states will follow real soon. You got time but it will happen before 2030 in enough states to matter

@@Randy-rs1cg California seems to be just about the only state that's taken such drastic measures...and I dont think too many states will follow suit...too many trucks and money will be lost and id that were the case all cars would have smog pumps etc like the cars of the 70's-80's!...maybe blue states but most red states won't choke hold truckers and the economy like that its too risky to the economy!

Counter Bore is really important. Counter bore goes bad because of the vibration of the engine it is really important to check it every time all you need is a sled gage.

My Detroit 60, 14l with 800k miles had excessive blow by, oil was spitting out my oil dipstick, my mechanic said to buy another engine. I found the same one with only 67k for 15,500k . It comes with the turbo too. I hope I did a smart thing.

I have a 12.7 with over 2M miles it doesn't burn oil, no mixing antifreeze it doesn't have any problems but is 2M miles a reason fr overhaul???

Some MAXXFORCE 13 owners are going 600k with no shop visits, and auction trucks are showing up with 1 million + miles. With this evidence it looks as if the block and head are okay. So the issue is, can you correct the EGR issue. ALOT of day cab 300k MAXFORCE trucks go at auction for $4,500. Assuming you could decarbonise the engine, would it be a swap candidate for an over the road?

What's overhaul vs overhead?

Overhaul is rebuilding the engine internals. New pistons,new rings,new liners,new rods, new main & rod bearings,new oil pump etc. Overhead is referred to doing your valve adjustment to have engine running at optimal performance. Will fix any fuel mileage lost,loss of power, small ticking, will save your valves

I’m having some issues with understanding the language: Is counter height and liner height the same thing? Jose used the word “conavores” (I probably spelled it wrong). What is this and what does it mean? He said it’s $1,500.

Jamael Nettles counterbore is the word jose used in the video. Liner height & liner protrusion same thing it is the measurement of how high or how low in the cylinder liner sits in the block. Very important in a head gasket replacement or overhaul that liner heights are within manufacturers specs or chances are you will have a head gasket failure due to one or more cylinders being higher or lower to the adjacent cylinder. Once the head is torqued down if you have a cylinder which is lower let’s 5 of your cylinders measured out at .010 and you have one reading out at .007 you will definitely be back in the shop again for head gasket failure due to the cylinder ring lower and the head gasket not sealing at the cylinder which will blow out the gasket and chances are you will have coolant loss and pressure in your cooling system. Rule of thumb you shouldn’t measure more than .002 between adjacent cylinders gasket won’t seal. Counter height would be the measurement of the counter bore it self this would indicate how much wear that bore has. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmirdmeZgtN3iLs

Just checking, I know these guys will admit off camera that a proper delete will extend the life of any rebuild.. Emissions and diesel don't work. Cat seen the writing on the wall and got out, they should of stayed out of the big truck market. Trade in your CDL and go to diesel school, these new trucks will be in the shop as much as the will be on the road. High maintenance trucks and cutthroat brokers, the industry is broken. This used to be a lifestyle, now just a regular job. At least we had good trucks in the past to fall back on..

dunno why u guys luv the volvos, they have poor quality control and poor customer support. seen lots of new volvos with window seal leaks, loose nuts/bolts/screws on the body, issues with the steering adjuster, etc

You should overhaul when you already have a paid off house, married and when you have money for an overhaul at 800k+ miles. In fucking shit USA economy I put 220 k Miles on my truck and didn't even net profit the legendary $1 per mile.

i think so too, especially if you done over 1 mil miles on it its well worth trading it in for a new one. its not worth time you spend in the shops constantly and the worries while on the road, will you be able to complete the next trip...
