The only bumpside diesel swap that has ever interested me was the guy in the Facebook groups that had an Isuzu diesel engine in his shortbed. The original owner of the truck had the diesel engine installed new back in the early '80's I think. The guy said that the truck could knock down about 35MPG out on the highway! That's a good swap to make a long distance cruiser, and it's not any heavier than what the original frame, suspension, and brakes were meant for.

I agree that putting a big truck diesel in a F100/F150 doesn't make a lot of sense, if you're looking to build a practical rig. But I've seen small Perkins, Mercedes and Kubota diesels swapped into half-ton Fords, and they actually work pretty well, if you're not looking to build a hot rod. Weight isn't excessive, they have power enough for towing, and mileage is excellent. Biggest downside (besides the fact you're pretty much on your own when it comes to working up a wiring harness, motor mounts, etc.) is they're pretty slow, particularly non-turbo variants. OTOH, a typical gas-engine half-ton slows way down as soon as you put a load on it, diesels don't much care. So if you're hauling or towing frequently, you're not actually giving up that much in the speed department. Anyway, interesting episode. I just thought I'd mention another possible way to go for anyone contemplating a diesel swap into a half ton.
@RealWorldGarage4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think the f100 chassis is strong enough to support the 7.3. But and it’s a big but, if he’s wanting to build a head turner for shows, even daily drive it, but not “work” it. Go for it. Not enough sugar for a nickel to make that chassis “useable”.

I would not even consider putting an American V8 diesel engine in a half ton truck, it just to much weight. However, I would consider swaping in a Mercedes OM606. The Mercedes is fully mechanical injection, it's a high speed engine so your gasoline drive train will work, there are dozens of examples of this engine making over 600 horses reliably, and it only weighs around 460 pounds. Unfortunately the Turbo OM606 is very hard to find.

This is something I've been thinking on for a while now. However my approach is a little different. You can find 9th gen F250's and 350 Powerstrokes with rotted out cabs but good frames. SOOO! My thought had been to find one and just do a 6th or 7th gen F series body swap. I think there's about a 2 inch difference in wheelbase. (Single cab long bed). But it would be simple to just move the rear axle forward and shorten the drive shaft.
@cheyennedogsoldiers4 жыл бұрын
Oh and my other thought was, if you could find a 6th or 7th gen crew cab. this should fit onto a 10th gen Superduty Powerstroke 250 pr 350 supercab frame with the 8 foot bed. And yes, I know with this pandemic thing I have WAY to much time on my hands. LOL

You are going about the swap the wrong direction. You should be swapping cabs and beds from the F100 to the 7.3 truck. Cab swaps of older trucks to newer frames are pretty common and get you all the better hardware but a cooler looking old truck. It's true, there's a lot more aftermarket for the Cummins, but there kinda needs to be because they're such garbage that parts need to be readily available if you wanna keep one running. The 7.3 powerstroke on the other hand, doesn't need any aftermarket support. The designer of that engine sold his soul to satan in exchange for the blueprint of the best diesel ever built....or ever will be built. I have an F350 that I regularly tow 100,000 pounds with and I can go down the interstate pulling that load at 120 mph @ barely over idle speed. The 7.3 also has artificial intelligence---most people dont know that. The AI in the Powerstroke is what they based the TV show Knight Rider on. They were originally going to use an F250 as KITT but it was too advanced and the producers had to dumb it down enough to make it more realistic, so that's why they used the Trans Am and Hasselhoff. I'm kidding, obviously. Put whatever powerplant you want in that beautiful old truck. Whatever you do will undoubtedly be entertaining and informative. Stay safe and be well, love the show!
