Interesting comment since my area of interest is touring car racing in the 1980s. Back then in my opinion the camera operators were better - at least here in Australia. they were able to convey the sense of speed and excitement that I stopped seeing even from the mid to late 90s and beyond. I think some of it might have had to do with the limited size of TV sets back in the 80s and their 4:3 aspect ratio. This basically forced the camera operators to fill most of the screen with the cars themselves. So there was a lot of zooming in which then brought the cars out from the background and they filled the screen. These days with high definition and 16:9 broadcasts seem to frame things from a spectator point of view. In my opinion, this is not as exciting especially given you are watching it on a TV and not actually there.

@@GARIU2B Good point. I actually hadn't thought of the notion that they frame it for the benefit of trackside sponsorship. Back in the old days there wasn't nearly so much trackside sponsorship - perhaps at the start finish but not much else. Coincidentally or not, cars used to fill the frame for much of the time and you tended to get way less of what was happening elsewhere. See my other comment as well.

They may be slower than F1 but I still love watching the F2 and F3 Qualifying/Sprint Races/Feature Races in the run up to the F1. Great knowing that some of those drivers will someday be taking over at the F1 level. Plus it seems like there is a lot more parity at those levels since it’s not up to the constructors (same car) and instead is 100% up to the driver.

Sadly, it is not 100% up to the driver. Sure, it's a spec series, but the team still has a very large influence on success. That's why certain teams are always near the front and other teams are always near the back.. Money still buys you the best equipment, the best tools for collecting and analyzing data, gets you more highly trained staff - the best race engineers, the best mechanics, the best physiotherapists etc. More money also means you can afford more spares and more frequent replacements for worn parts.

Back in 1990 my dad dropped me and a friend at Silverstone for the British GP. He wasn’t interested in F1 but enjoyed nature and bird watching. So in his words he “went somewhere about 10 miles away.” He could hear the cars from that distance. In 1999 I went to Spa to watch the Belgian GP. We stood at No Name (even though it’s called No Name so technically it has a name) because you can see a lot of the circuit from there. It’s the furthest point away from the grid area and you could hear the cars as if they were next to you, the sound wasn’t that much quieter, despite the distance, pit buildings, trees and wind direction. 2024 (I think) and you’re saying the curbs are louder than the engines because the tyres are wide! Also isn’t there supposed to be some kind of engine sound amplifier on all the cars?
