I finally understand what Palms is.(our team doesn't use that terminology). Whenever you used that term in the past I thought it was what you described as quarters here in this video. This was an important clarification video.

Very, Very informative. As an offensive guy, i was always under the assumption that cov 4, 2-Read, & palms were all the same. Thank you for the explanation. I will re watch this vid to drill it in my head.

Good video Coach. Great job explaining the evolution of quarters coverage. And yes, the first thing we address as a defensive staff is the run fits. Have to answer that before we do anything else.

One of my favorite videos to date Coach Mac. We call Palms “Miami” since our coverages are NFL teams or cities.

Coach, I like it. As long as the kids can remember both the call and their assignments, that's what you do. I have used whatever mnemonic devices I could. I like "Miami" for Palms.....Palm trees I assume?

How do u coach the eyes and feet of the Sam LB in Palms with a detached #2? I assume he is looking to help on the run, before he does his pass responsibility. How do you have his feet. Is he faced inside, outside, or parallel to the LOS.
@CoachMac4 жыл бұрын
Parallel, eyes inside tackle to #3. Heels at 5 YDS depth

What’s the difference between “man match” and “zone match”? I often see it used interchangeably and it’s confusing.
@CoachMac2 жыл бұрын
For me, and again just my opinion Man Match means every player in the coverage will end up on a man somewhere. Zone match we will drop with zone integrity and only match certain pattern distributions. Like an overhang in 2 Read is a curl defend unless #3 brings him to the flat and he has to carry the wheel of #3.
@TheInterloperTV2 жыл бұрын
@@CoachMac So to put its basically man match is a way to match routes out of man to man(1 cross), and zone match is a way to match routes out of zone (stubbie, special etc)?

Hey Coach, how would you teach your players to pattern match when playing palms against a traditional mesh style play from a 2x2 spread formation, or a shallow cross from #2 if #1 and #2 on the other side of the formation run vertical?
@CoachMac4 жыл бұрын
Vertical side becomes man, underneath players have to pass off the mesh

Thanks for the video Coach. Do you know where the term "Palms" came from? I was always confused by that terminology and didn't know until now that it was synonymous with 2 Read.

LB is swing deep of 3, match leverage and gain depth. Depth in drop helps with leverage and defending possible wheel

Coach, how many teams do you see that call pure quarters/pure palms? I feel like if any team plays pure quarters you’re going to get drained out strong and hit with routes wide open weak. Example being an offense coming out in 3x1 with the HB weak, then running stick strong, and slant flat weak with the slant being wide open. Would love to hear your input.
@CoachMac2 жыл бұрын
Usually a combination of coverages in a Split Field World, what do you define True Quarters as?
@noahhollow14412 жыл бұрын
@@CoachMac As far as I know it’s the same way you describe it. Apex player outside of #2. Take 2 to the flat and the wheel. 3x1 would be the corner playing MOD on #1 with smash rules.

@@CoachMac OneBack - especially 12 - was the Sid Gillman standard and very ahead of it’s time. It took some time but eventually pushed out the Pro 21. Interestingly Lombardi (famous for the standard 21 pro sets and originating a new style of blocking - run to daylight) ideas were from Gillman. Including the first ideas of blocking space or zone blocking.

Coach how would you handle a situation where you are in 2 Read with a detached #2 and they run the #1 on a Post/Arrow at your FS then run an Out&Go with the #2. We faced that in 7v7 a lot and a bit in real football. It was really putting the FC in a bind because he is coming up on the Out route then when it breaks into a Go he was getting caught flat footed.
@CoachMac4 жыл бұрын
Don’t drive the out until ball gets thrown, that should give him enough depth to handle the wheel. Rep it a bunch in practice, and have other coverages to protect it
@craigseal46044 жыл бұрын
@@CoachMac Thank you for the quick reply. Great content BTW!!!!
@carsonscity76703 жыл бұрын
@@craigseal4604 We let our Safety call "switch" on this and would trade the routes with our CB. Anytime we get Post/Wheel or something like you said we are switching it off.
@sfcareivy7 ай бұрын
why do you play your SAM outside of #2? how can he be the force player etc?
@CoachMac7 ай бұрын
It’s actually easier to force from outside in. It removes him from the fit inside so now the Safety has to be involved. Changing leverage makes it tougher on the offense
