As requested, here's what I know about the differences in powdered milks. Here's a website that gives an explanation about the difference between the regular type and instant type. According to them, the way they are made with the equipment available today, there is no significant difference in the taste between the two these days. I don't know if I mentioned it in the video but the lecithin that is used in the instant non-fat milk actually has health benefits but they say that not enough is added to the milk to make a significant difference.

Thanks for the thorough synopsis and price breakdown. Just because it's the cheapest doesn't make it the best deal. I always said that if I had to do without milk then so be it because there is no way I am drinking nonfat dry milk. Hate the stuff. I'm not a big milk drinker and most of my milk consumption is with cereal. In dire situations, cereal would be on the bottom of my priority list!

Something I have noticed with the Walmart instant dry milk is if you let it sit in your fridge for 24 - 48 hours before drinking, it tastes a lot closer to fresh milk. It loses most of that sweet taste that you get if you mix it and drink it on the spot. Still not perfect but much more drinkable. Also it seems to be more palatable when it's ice cold so set your fridge accordingly.

Thank you for all your work. I had been trying to figure out what to do about milk for storage and after listening to this went to Honeyville and ordered a 25 lb bag. It was a lot cheaper this way and I have various canning options here. As usual you seem to be able to come to the rescue just in time. I was getting so frustrated as to what to do about milk and your video came up. We need to get you a cape and super shirt. Have a great day.

I am humbled, I am ever so grateful for you doing this response for me. This explains so much now. I trust your opinions and have much faith in all your videos. And this also answers my dilemma of whether to buy that alternative milk. I have been batting that around for months. I also live on east coast & the S&H kills a lot of my purchases. Maybe companies will wake up to their loss of sales. I can not begin to thank you enough for doing this.(((((hugs)))))

I love Nido milk. I actually like the taste! Thank you so much for the awesome research you have done, and for your generosity in sharing it with your fans. You are SO appreciated! I will definitely look into the milk alternative for LT storage, because, as you say, Nido has a pretty short shelf life. I had some getting ready to expire, so I made hot cocoa mixes for Christmas gifts for my clients. They were a huge hit!

Hi, enjoyed your video. I was just looking on the Honeyville website and found the following information. The Honeyville "milk alternative" is chemical ridden, whereas their Instant Nonfat Dry Milk is milk, palm oil, and vitamins. Here's the break down, just thought you would want to be aware. Brum Honeyville Instant Milk Alternative Ingredients: Whey, Nonfat Milk, Non Dairy Creamer (Coconut oil, Corn Syrup Solid, Sodium Caseinate Dipotassium phosphate, Mono and Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin), Calcium Sulfate, Vitamin Mix.(Ascorbic acid, vitamin E acetate, dicalcium phosphate, vitamin A palmitate, niacinamide, zinc oxide, reduced iron, copper gluconate, calcium panthothenate, vitamin D-3, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, and vitamin B-12). Honeyville Nonfat Dry Milk Ingredients: Nonfat Dry Milk, Vitamin A, Palmate, Vitamin D.

Wow after seeing your price comparison I will quit complaining about the prices I pay. I stocked on NIDO, haven't used any as of yet because I haven't needed it. We cut our consumption of milk products way down due to the prices of milk being $4 a gallon for 2%. I only pay $2.00 for a can of NIDO, figures out to be 61 cents a gallon. I would suggest for people to check around for bargain type stores, you do have to watch the dates but products are far cheaper. Great video, thank you.

I like tge honeyville whey too. I was thinking of taking a cup of instant puffy and flattening it in a bag then seeing what a cup was reduced to and altering the measurements for reconstitution. I can store more in a smaller container that way. Good comparison u have. A real awakener. Thanks.

Very interesting! My son (now an adult) was born with a milk allergy, to this day he cannot drink/eat anything made with cow's milk or it comes back up immediately. The gaining popularity over the years of soy was such a good thing in my household except you couldn't make pudding with it...it would not set. We've since settled on Almond milk. Not sure if you can make pudding w/ it haven't tried. Great video & smartly done I enjoyed it thanks for sharing!

I go to an Amish store to get mine, they have some salvage type items. The nido has never been expired. In different area they have stores that have the same type of items they are usually referred to as salvage or dented can stores. So far I have been able to find them in almost every part of Missouri, close enough to make the trip worth it. Most buy stuff by the train loads when the stores fail to pick it up by the dead line getting it cheap so the trains (or trucks) can get moving again.

I, like you can do without the alternative milk and finding something better is a chore. I did find that mixing a tablespoon of coffee creamer into the hydrated milk did help the taste a bit when consuming milk by the glass. I am not a milk consumer except in recipes or hot tea or iced coffee. And then I use whatever tastes best to me. Thank you for the address and the video. I do and have used the Carnation dried milk to make yogurt and in recipes. Thanks again for the video.

I just received a whole bucket of non-fat milk powder from Saratoga Farms. I did not care for it at all. Could be the non-fat thing but it has a very funky taste! I purchased NIDO from Wal Mart and it is very pleasant tasting. Based only on the taste of these two and not the cost, etc. I choose NIDO until I am able to try other brands. I will be re-sealing my bucket knowing it will taste good if I am desperate for milk. I love Honeyville products so I will be ordering soon to give it a try.

Great Video. I've done extensive taste testing, and price shopping and now store 4 different varieties. I agree with you on best taste, the honeyville alternative, hands down tastes the best, and I store it for drinking milk. I use provident pantry for my flavored drinks like hot chocolate (I can send you the recipe if you like), flavored milk, etc. It works better in the end. Nido, is my goto milk for breads and other recipes that require full fat, but I buy it from amazon using amazon prime (believe it or not, its manufactured in North PA, but comes from England). As for a non-instant, I go with Thrive, which is $7.99 shipping and about $23 per can. We're about equidistant to an LDS store. Too far to drive unless I'm heading south for some other reason.

true, in Australia ( well from what I have seen) we only have the instant kind usually in full fat or skim and we have just non dairy creamer, which has nothing but hydronized palm and veg oil....the thing is we have a lot of UHT and long life milks, yes they taste a tad different but different dosnt mean bad and the one I buy here in Aus is called Devondale Long life milk which is real milk heated and sealed in a sterial container in a sterial room

I had a list that I needed to fill before the milk so I only got 2 of them, but I will purchase by the case the next time I order. I really wanted to try it first though. I did do pretty good this time, so no problem. I gotta get busy on canning some meat though, I have been putting it off over and over, so it's time. Now that it's winter, and time to think about preps, I already have about a 100 lists of things to do, or prepare for. Dang, I need fulltime help here, getting too old for this.

I was raised on nonfat dry milk. I remember my mom made a pitcher every couple nights. My dad called it "melk" instead of the more precise "milk", and its a pronunciation that has stuck with me all these years. My recently-diagnosed diabetes is causing me to avoid milk (or melk) because the milk sugars play havoc with my glucose levels. I'm still looking for a food that is better for my diabetes.

For those that cannot find formula, goats milk may be a good alternative. Fresh is best, naturally homogenized, easier to digest. If you don't like the taste of whatever milk, try adding a little vanilla and/or sugar. Whatever milk is best chilled.

I looked up some taste testing on powdered milks about a year or so ago. Came across a video here on youtube where a bunch of LDS women checked out a variety of the milks. Most were shocked that the milk from the LDS cannery came in second in the test since they were use to drinking it. The one that came out first was a powdered milk called "Country Cream". It too comes in #10 cans and makes 5 gallons for $17.99 a can at Grandmas Country Foods Dot Com. Flat rate shipping $6.99

Nido is good tried it and you can even use it on cold cereal if you chill it overnight but use it within 24 hrs after preparing it. you can use it to make the cook and serve pudding too it replaces the milk you buy in the jugs for cooking and it is drinkable as well much more useful than the instant nonfat dry milk is. when mixing use hot tap water and add the powder to the water not the other way around mix well and chill overnight for drinking or for cereal not necessary to chill it if you are using it to cook with get all the tips on their website btw I use the Fortificada not the 1 plus it is sweetened with honey and may be too sweet for exchanging with regular milk. drink it warm to help you sleep makes good hot cocoa too. it is a good product
