Punjabi is mainly written in two scripts. Shahmukhi (Perso-Arabic), Gurmukhi (barahman).
Shahmukhi is an Indian term in Pakistan it is called Urdu script or nastaleeq Punjabi script. Shah (Badshah) Mukhi (mouth of), Shahmukhi means from the mouth of the shah. It is the oldest Punjabi script followed by many notable Punjabi writers and poets Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Baba Farid Ganjshakar, and few Sikh gurus as well. It is common in Pakistani Punjab.
Gurmukhi was developed by the 2nd Guru of Sikh religion Guru Angad Dev Ji in the 16th century. Gurumukhi word came from 'Gurmukhi' which means follower. In literal meaning, Gurmukhi means 'from the mouth of the guru'. Gurmukhi is considered a standard Punjabi script. Few verses of Guru Granth Sahib is written in gurmukhi (sant bhasha).
