Just to prevent confusion. A lot of terms are different between Japanese and English. Like how Chosen Children was changed into DigiDestined or the Digimentals being changed to DigiEggs. I personally prefer the Japanese terms for consistency but in the end they’re just different terms for the same things.

The first two evolution lines for the children were reactions to to intense situations. The perfect evolutions goes by the ideology that the children are at their strongest when their most prominent trait is tested and they overcome their internal dilemma. The Mega evolution came because of a miracle, no one in the show actually knew what was going to happen when the arrows hit, but they had to believe. And the final evolution came from a movie when the most powerful forces of good combined together. Think it of similar to a Vegetto situation in DBZ.

And the dark evolution happened when he tried to force the evolution by putting himself at risk intentionally and his courage (his characteristic) turned to recklessness.

Usually it takes a specific McGuffin for them to reach Ultimate or Mega, but it gets kind-of 'powercrept' as things go on and people just start doing higher-leveled evolutions without any outside justifications.

Digimon don't really have types like Pokémon. There's 3 Attributes, Vaccine, Virus and Data, who do form a triangle that have advantage over each other (plus Free Attribute which sits outside of the triangle), but that's rarely used as type advantage outside of videogames. What Digimon calls Types are more akin to egg groups in Pokémon, indicate the kind of creature the Digimon is rather than informing its strenghts and weaknesses. There's types that are more elemental like Plant, Machine, Beast, but also lots of more specific ones like Dragon Man, Demon Lord, Holy Knight and so on.

Digimon typing has multiple factors to it. First is attributes which consist of vaccine, data, virus, free and variable. The first three have a Rock Paper Scissors relationship, while Free belong to more ancient digimon while variables can shift attributes. There are also some with attributes that are unidentifiable or have no attribute at all. Then their are families which are more what you’re referring to in how they look in appearance. These include Nature Spirits, Deep Savers, Nightmare Soldiers, Wind Guardians, Metal Empire, Unknown, Dark Area, Virus Busters, Dragon’s Roar, Jungle Troopers, D-Reaper Zone and also some that don’t fall into any specific family. There’s also species which would explain some of the more weird changes, since Patamon is a celestial beast paired with Takeru’s power of Hope and Tailmon being a Holy Beast paired with Hikari’s power of Light it justifies the angel transformations a lot more.

Kind-of? The 'families' are only a thing in one set of games, but they can be kind-of useful. I've also always heard the 'species' be called their Type, but it's just kind-of whatever and it doesn't really matter. Known types are things like: Avian/Bird Beast Sea Beast Machine Cyborg Evil Wizard Puppet (most humanoids) Dinosaur Vegetation Fairy X-Antibody Angel ArchAngel Demon Demon Lord Hybrid Armor etc. And a lot of Digimon have more than one specific type as well.

@mray4784 Yeah, but it's one thing to have a pet that has a aditude it's another to have one that will snark back and wiese crack with you and bounce one liners along side you as both fight for your lives to save the world. Digimon as characters hit different than Pokémon do. Like Renamon posed of not just for her looks but voice and aditude showed like Rika will just call her name Renamon ninja in on a tree branch or behind her kneeling and ask what's her orders. Like she in the first half of tamers feels like Rika's personal ninja hit man. If you told me she killed people cuase Rika said to I'd full believe it.

So each character has a virtue that their digimon uses to evolve past adult/champion stage. Greymon uses courage (when that became reckless self-endangerment he became SkullGreymon) Garurumon uses friendship (could say loyalty) Birdramon is love Kabuterimon is knowledge Togemon is purity (of emotion, unrestrained) Ikkakumon is trust Tailmon is light (not sure how that works, series is vague) and Angemon is hope.

to put up some context :b what triggers evolution: it depends but it is a mix between emotions, maturity, danger, plot necesities and power scaling, mostly the emotion and danger, at least the adult/champion ones; however to perfect/ultimate it is mostly the maturity and emotions related to the crests each of the children represent, each one represent one crest; courage, friendship, love, knowledge, purity, honesty, hope and light; by maturing, accepting and showing the thing their crest represent, they make the evolution possible. To the ultimate/mega level, it was a something of a prophecy but the scene basically means that the mix between courage (the mc), friendship (the second mc), hope (the guy that has the flying potato that turns into an angel), and light (the one with the cat that turns into another angel) can make miracles; and to finish, the fusion is better explained in omegamon's profile but to put up some context they were fighting a digimon called diaboromon that is born from all the toxicity, hatred and that stuff from the internet, and it was planning to nuke the world so they had a time limit to stop him; they were defeated, however, the feelings of hope, justice and wishes for good mixed together, making the evolution possible. the random looking evolution lines: yeah... get used to that XD, digimons (in lore) can evolve to basically anything, literally, a mechanic of the franchise since the beginnings in the v-pets (a tamagotchi spin off, yeah, digimon started as a tamagotchi spin off made for boys); the core mechanic was that depending on how you treat, take care and train your digimon it can become one thing or another, obviously, taking good care and well... actually treating your digimon as a friend + some nice training and battle victories, make the best results; in the anime it is not much like that as they tend to use linear evolutions with some exceptions (for example skullgreymon that got influenced by the ba treatment the mc gave him, plus the wrong type of courage he showed basically forcing greymon to fight when he saw he couldn't and was kinda suffering there, which lead to skullgreymon instead of the "better" result that was metal greymon), technically any digimon can become anything with the right conditions as the environment, tamer, etc, has influence on their growth types: in digimon there are actually only three attributes... thought sometimes they are refered as types but whatever, the 3 main attributes are vaccine, virus and data; these work like this: data > vaccine > virus > data; there are other classifications but they don't have any advantage and just are there to classify digimons; for example the fields that are more like groups of digimons species that are centered on one theme or share some data and characteristics (dragons roar: fire, dragon or reptile based digimon; deep savers: water or ice related; wing guardians: flying or plant related digimons; jungle troopers: plant or insect digimons; virus busters: heroic or angelic digimons; nightmare soldiers: darkness, spirit or halloween related digimons; metal empire: machine cyborg or mechanical related; etc). There are also types, sometimes mistaken as attributes, however these don't work like pokemon s they don't have advantage over another, just are another classification of digimons (dinosaur, dramon/dragon, beast, holy beast, reptile, bird, mineral, ceratopsian, insect, beast man, fairy, demon, food, galaxy, plant, warrior, etc). sorry for the bible XD, nice video btw :b

So digimon have 4 main stages (I have but their names in English/Japanese order): 1. Rookie/Child 2. Champion/Adult 3. Ultimate/Perfect 4. Mega/Ultimate In the show, the digimon evolved from Rookie to Champion just to protect their partners. But to evolve from Champion to ultimate, the children needed to show their virtues. (E.g. to evolve from Greymon to Metalgreymon, his partner needed to show Courage) The final evolution Mega, took a prophecy to unlock, so only the two main kids unlocked it. The reason why Omegamon looks different is because he first showed up in the sequel movie as opposed to the main series.

There's 6 stages, Rookie is 3rd. Baby/Fresh and In Training (eg Koromon) come before. Original show has them start as stage 2, reaching stage 3 in the first episode.

When will your digimon evolve: 1. If you are in any danger 2. If your bond with it grows to a certain degree 3. If you mature as a person or get over some sort of mental problem that may have prevented it before. 4.If you are not giving up after it has been trashed for a while, smth about willpower & hotbloodedness 5. If either of you gets rly angry about something. 6. If they are fed a lot of data 7. If they naturally adapt to some intense stress like if Goku started training at 100G while traveling to Namek but went SuperSaiyan instead of gradually powering up or dying. Maybe few other ways to evolve.

Gender in Digimon is really interesting because it's like, Digimon don't actually reproduce. They don't have sexes or anything, they're just data. But they vaguely identify in different things, usually based on what they evolve into. Like Devimon is pretty clearly male presenting, but by evolving he can become LadyDevimon, which is female presenting. So for most Digimon, which tend to be pretty ambiguous, it's just kind-of whatever. I've seen Biyomon be played with male and female voices in different series and it makes sense either way. And because pronouns aren't as big of a thing in Japanese, a lot of the time there just isn't really an official answer. What gender identity does a giant bug monster have if it just roars and growls at you, you know?

Thanks for this. So the (English) paths are: Egg->baby->training->rookie->champion->Ultimate & every step has multiple branches. Then the anime created MegaUltimate, armoured, Fusions, mode/class-shift (Beast, Fighter, Paladin, Burst, ect). Bio-merge is digimon and humans fusing; Spirit evolution is humans transforming into digimon. All digimon can naturally evolve, though most stay at training or rookie. The power of the partners can grant temporary evolutions to escalating tiers, or warp-evolution can go directly to Mega.

You are comparing them to Pokemon and they are not similar in a lot of senses. Evolutions in the series trigger in emotional moments, normally cause of pain or desperation, the kids almost die in almost every chapter of the series, specially in adventure 1, the one you saw. The types of the digimons are not similar to Pokemon, there are vaccine ones, virus ones and others and they are not very consistent, in some games you will have two types or more for one digimon or classify them with elements such as ice or metal, in games they usually evolve by level, reaching some stats (Attack Defense HP etc) or main story events like in the series. Digimon games are not like main Pokemon ones, there is a wide variety with very different gameplay, digimon world 1 is like a sophisticated tamagotchi with a full story and a big map and digimon world 2 is a turn based rpg like Dragon quest or Golden Sun but with dungeons.

Digimon that evolve naturally can maintain that achieved stage of evolution and even if forced back into a prior form due to damage or over-exertion can regain that naturally achieved evolved form while recovering and resume maintaining it. Digimon that achieve an evolved form purely thanks to a human partner are essentially using that connection to bypass the natural process and can't maintain the state longer than necessary, reverting to their last naturally achieved form or even further for a time if pushed too far in the same manner mentioned above. At least that's true in the anime. An example is how at this timestamp that prompted you to ask this the previously shown Greymon and Garurumon, who evolved thanks to their partner via their Digivice, are back to being Agumon and Gabumon respectively instead of the even younger/weaker Koromon and Tsunomon they evolved from naturally. 9:35 Despite how they may outwardly sound or appear Digimon canonically have no gender although they may choose to present or even identify as one.

Digimon types are wierd, theres like a 3 stage classification Agumon for instance. He is a Data/Fire/Dinosaur. This means he is made of basic data which is weak to Virus Attrubute digimon, uses Fire attacks which are strong against Ice element digimon, and is related to other dinousaur digimon causing him to *generally* evolve or degenerate into others of that relation Theres also Free type, which exists on every layer. Usually baby digimon are triad free/free/free, made of unsigned data, using basic blunt force attacks or blowing bubbles, and having amorphous body shapes with potential to only digivolve into one or two forms. They have no weaknesses or strengths, they just kind of exist, like normal type pokemon but worse

for suddenly watching the evolution it might be weird with long way to explain, you need to watch the whole series to understand the theory and concept~ but I can simplify the concept for you a little... Basically this show is talking about how's these children grow up. for how the monster able to evo, is because of those chosen children (which the show also called them as DigiDestined) they learn how to facing the problem, grow up and transcend yourself/Overcome psychological barriers. This are the power channel through the "Digivice" to make Digimon Evo. the more they grow up and mature, their Digimon partner able to evo further level. hope this can slightly explain the concept with my own theory. ^^;

@@AnimeZipCommunity Well you definitely should watch it soon. This show is what got me into anime in the first place, it was my very first. Before like any other kid I just watch shows from Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. My top 3 favorites had always been Power Rangers, The Muppets, and Care Bears. Back then I didn’t know Japan even made their own cartoon shows. I seen stuff for Dragon Ball and Sailor moon but I didn’t know they were originally from Japan. Then Pokemon came around, but I was never into it. First time I was exposed to Digimon was when I saw promos for it on Fox Kids. I thought it was some kind of spin-off of Pokemon. Back then I use to tape episodes of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Power Rangers Power Playback. On the day Digimon first aired back in August 1999, I preset the VCR to tape Power Playback while I went to the Philadelphia Zoo with my mom and uncle through business trip through her work. When I got home to play the tape, I found that the series premiere of Digimon recorded instead. I was so mad and upset especially when the same thing happened the following week. PRPP had been taken off and it’s time slot given to Digimon. Eventually though I watched both episodes and I started getting into the series. I missed episodes a lot because I didn’t realize they were airing on the weekdays too, but by the 8th Child arc I got caught up. I’d been watching season after season ever since. Ah the memories. Anyways, you should definitely do reaction videos for it when you start watching it. Check Digimon Wiki for the episode and series order. The first 4 seasons are on Hulu, the rest you can try watching on this sight: www.wcoanimedub.tv/dubbed-anime-list. After you watch the dub of each episode check out the original sub versions next on Kissanime. I myself refuse to watch the latest Digimon series until the dub for it comes out.
