Beginning of May 2019 i felt so many bumps beneath my skin, which was my cystic acne on cheeks. Seriously in August 2019 after starting Adapalene 0.3% (Derm prescribed) ,my face completely was horrifying. It seriously took me 4 months for my face to see improvements, I was purging like crazy from Aug-Dec. My whole cheeks were so bloody, red and swollen. I felt like this adapelene shit was bullshit, but oh my god. After 5 months, January 2020 my cheeks look so clean, no cystic or bloody swollen pimples. I use it every night, but what I do have is like redness because of the healing my skin is still undergoing healing. When i was at my lowest I would look at comments like these to make me have hope, so if anyone reading this is crying over their skin like I did for a few months, it will get better 💗. Believe in the process.

no actually thank you for this. i started breaking out on my chin after a breakup and finals week and assumed it was just stress. unfortunately, after the “breakout” in may 2022, it is now all over my chin. my derm put me on differin and i’m roughly two weeks in and this purge is horrifying. glad to see that theres hope !

@@gdawgmlp I’m glad my notifications were on to see your reply! I can’t believe I wrote that 2 years ago, your skin will be amazing with adapalene, it’s so cheesy to say but it really is a “trust the process” type of thing! Don’t get discouraged by the purging your skin will go through, my dermatologist also recommended me La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo and it’s for your acne scars/redness that you will have after your adapalene treatment is over 💗 Start off by applying it after your moisturizer that way it won’t be too harsh on your skin and as weeks go by start applying it before your moisturizer. It’s an amazing product I can’t live without and i only use it at night,it has benzoyl peroxide so it keeps your skin break-out free!

Dr. Dray!!! Thank you so so much for sharing your expertise with the world. I have been struggling for months with adult acne. I have never had a problem with this previously, and I never knew how much emotional damage that acne could cause. I currently do not have health insurance so going to the dermatologist wasn't an option for me. Your videos have been a life saver for me. I just wanted to say thank you! How on Earth did my dermatologist not think to tell me that my acne and irritation on Differin was normal!?!? She prescribed it and told me I shouldn’t have a reaction, and when I got eczema on my face she STILL didn’t say anything. Thanks Dr. Dre, you’re always the first person I watch to see what I should do! P.S. I gave up on Differin, but now I’m going to try it again!

Great info on a very hot topic - and so clear and concise. Are the "acne" receptors different from the "wrinkle" receptors, or is it just a matter of how deeply the retinoid penetrates that determines the type of action that it has in the skin (acne - higher levels, wrinkles - deeper levels)? What is causing this confusion for me is the matter of retinols, which must be converted to retinoids in the skin to be active. Does the locale of this conversion determine the type of action they have? These are promoted as anti-aging rather than anti-acne agents, which leads me to think that there is something else going on here. Or not? Have a great weekend!

I’ve been using Differin for 8 months now & it has done incredible wonders for my skin. It took me about 2 months of consistent use to get thru the “purge” it’s gonna suck to get thru but I promise it’s worth it. Even just the texture of my skin so sooo smooth now. I haven’t noticed much help with how oily my skin is. I use just a gentle cleanser, oil free moisturizer, differin, and just started a light therapy mask.

Hi..did you have acne or acne prone skin?
@Sara-vy4vu
@Sara-vy4vu 4 жыл бұрын
Sia Lee yes! My skin is incredibly oily so my pores get clogged easily and had acne blemished constantly before starting differin. I get so many compliments on my skin now, it’s so smooth and clear. I get a couple pimples here and there mainly just around my period. I definitely recommend trying it out! I stuck to her routine of the Neutrogena general foaming cleanser and Neutrogena oil free moisturizer for night and Neutrogena gentle moisturizer with 30SPF! Let me know if you have any more questions

Sara thanks! I don’t have acne or acne prone skin, however I do suffer from oily skin, more so in the summer which leaves my skin texture bumpy looking, and I have a hyperpigmentation. I would like to have a smoother textured skin and less visible pores due to the oiliness. Scared of the purge! I don’t think I would since I don’t have breakouts or acne. You never know.
@Sara-vy4vu
@Sara-vy4vu 4 жыл бұрын
Sia Lee I think Differin would deff help for sure with just the texture cause mine (and I shave my face which helps a lot too) feels like glass now. I mean considering it brings up acne to the surface maybe it would be less for you since you generally don’t have any to really begin with? I’d maybe google it but I’ve heard of people not experience a real purge period so you could be one of the lucky ones!

Nicole Sekel I currently work as a Derm PA and absolutely love it. Most of my patients at this point pretty much treat me as the doctor, I'm only 7 months out of school. I run my own clinic with a doctor that I can call at any time if needed. Personally I love the autonomy I have but also really like having back up when I need a little extra advice for difficult cases. Absolutely love this channel and I love dermatology as well I wouldn't change where I'm at right now for anything. My best advice would be to shadow a derm derm and shadow a derm MD and a DO, even sitting in on classes and speaking with Med students/ PA students. It's the best way to see where you think you would fit in the most.

It is good that you mentioned this about Tretinoin, since it helps very well with antiaging, fine lines & wrinkles, it is definitely going to be more prone to irritation, though there is ways to manage this. Very insightful, thank you. I feel I only would like help with clearing completely my acne. Tretinoin gets within the depth of its layers to do so, but my skin is sensitive, and it's also more convenient to get otc Differin gel 0.1%, but I either way, have an derm. Appt scheduled. So, I'm here outweighing the scales of what's best.

I used to apply differin before moisturizer because that's what the instructions in the box says. I did it for about a week. I then developed some red, scaly patches on my face. I freaked out. Thankfully, I saw one of Dr. Dray's video showing to apply it after moisturizer. When I followed that, my face started calming down and the patches disappear. I've been using differin now for almost 2 months and I do notice some improvements like blackheads disappearing. I'm still confused why the instructions in the differin box though says to apply it BEFORE moisturizer.
@StephanieRZ
@StephanieRZ 4 жыл бұрын
@@Miumiu0404 Yeah, they definitely should've taken this into account more. It helps to moisturize, when using Differin because it acts as a shield or a buffer. While still providing the effects you would like.

I've been using Differin for about 3 weeks for anti-aging. I have an appointment on Monday with my dermatologist for another reason and I'm going to ask her about possibly using tretinoin instead. I'm wondering if most insurances cover it? The reason for my appointment is for acute onset hair shedding. I am 55 and currently going through menopause. I'm not sure if that is contributing to my hair shedding or not. It's very disheartening. I feel like if it continues at the rate it's falling out that I'm going to end up bald 😢 I'm assuming she will order some blood work to see what we can figure out. I know there a few different things that can cause it. I'm a brand new subscriber to your channel and I'm so glad that I found you. I really enjoy your videos!

I love, love, LOVE your channel! You have really de-cluttered my skincare wardrobe ;) I am thinking about starting Differin. And I am very religious about taking care of my skin. But I do still get small pimples and whiteheads. Sometimes my skin is really good, but then BOOM, I get small pimples, usually the area around my nose. But I really hate purging. I haven’t seen your skin very up close, but did you experience purging with the Differin? Does everyone go through this? In any case, is it better to start slow, i.e once/twice a week? Or will the purge happen anyway?

Happy Friday 🌷 On the way from my dermatologist appt yesterday I swung into Target and finally found the Cruel. I have to say I like it very much for those days I'm in a rush or it's very hot outside. Compare to the Eucerin in the shower it was far better. Cruel was much thicker and more moisturizing. Hey Dr. Dray!! Thank you so so much for all the videos you've done on Differin. I've just been to the dermatologist and he recommended Epiduo for my mild-moderate acne. I'm greatly afraid of the irritation and purging with Epiduo and saw you mentioned that it'll be less irritating if you start with adapalene then BP 3 weeks later. Should I just go ahead with the Epiduo? Or should I do it step by step like you did? Your advice would help me out so much... Thank you!!

Very glad you've made videos on these important topics! I have such an dislike personally over visiting dermatologists and I'm not sure why, I feel I just rather try to maneuver on my own to treat my skin. Maybe listening to many people's suffering overall & how it's considered for cosmetic reasons, and going in for full body scans (kind of not a fan of this), etc prices, just plenty of reasons to try everything else before completely deciding to do so. Either way, I am scheduled to visit one for the first time, but I do plan on trying Adapalene/Differin Gel 0.1% for my sensitive skin, that only now really has significantly reduced down my hormonal acne, therefore it's mild to moderate acne, and am now just wanting it to Completely go away. I feel I will use it very mindfully, at night, after moisturizing + a couple minutes have passed, to sleep with it on (after I know how my skin responses to it). I will be moisturizing with an Derma E Vitamin E 12,000 I.U cream, that also does contain Vitamin A (doesn't affect me with nothing other than moisture, protection & positive effects thankfully; even anti-aging in my smile lines & undereyes!) *I hope this is still safe to use, if I will be using Differin Gel on my acne spots?* Should I apply more moisturizer to the nose, nearby lip area, and eye area? Or use a seperate product?

Thanks for a very detained explanation of the family of vitamin A derivatives. I'm using adapalene for my cheeks where I have acne. Once I use up my differin, I'm starting tretinoin since I think my skin then is more prepared for the higher level of potency. I use retinol on my forehead where I don't have acne and my neck where skin is more sensitive. My assumption is we can use different forms of vitamin A derivatives on different parts of skin and for different needs. As always, thank you and enjoy your Friday :)

Dr.Dray, A friend of mine excitedly mentioned you to me about a month ago. I've always had small bumps all over my face primarily in the forehead area when younger..and for awhile it cleared up partially as an adult. Although I have had to use a cleanser, moisturizer and acne gel all of my adult life. Now, I'm experiencing all the fun changes that menopause can bring. Hot Flashes, and of course acne! I noticed I was getting whiteheads (never experienced these before. Went to a skin care place..where they did this facial on me that was super expensive and he push and prodded and about killed me.. needless to say I will never do that again.. the lesson learned was a scar.. and as tiny as it is..it's still a scar. So.. I changed up my skin care routine. I have always used Mary Kay's facial cleanser and changed up off and on using their Moisturizer or Neutrogena's oil free moisturizer and when needed the Neutrogena's Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion oil free w Salicylic acid at night and sometimes in the morning. . Not working any longer. After watching you .. I purchased CeraVe's Hydrating Facial Cleanser today. I was wondering how you have been doing with the Differin now ? I noticed that the first use for you was in June? I'm thinking of using this along with the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser and I'll look at your recommendations for a moisturizer.. I'm really hoping that this works w the small teeny tiny whiteheads that have been developing. Whew! all of that just to ask you how your doing with the Differin as of 11.11.2017. Thank you for your reply in advance. Aloha.. Dee PS. I absolutely love watching your videos. It's part of my nightly routine now.

Hi Dr. Dray! I'm so glad I found your channel and can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us (new subby 😁). My question is: would you consider Adapalene a good starting point to acclimate the skin for Tretinoin? Acne is not a problem for me but I do have lines and wrinkles and have fairly sensitive skin. Already ordered Differin but haven't started it yet. Thanks so much! 💖

I think you can use aha/bha once in two weeks and avoid using differin for 2-3 days after that. Niacinamide can be used in the morning assuming that you're using differin at night off course these two can't be mixed/used at the same time

I've used differin for over a year now and it did help with some of the marks I had and I had some bad scarring, too. They didn't totally disappear, but they've faded enough and I'm personally comfortable with it. I also use the First Aid Beauty lotion she recommended because of the Licorice brightening effect, although it's a temporary thing.

Will you do a video on Asian sunscreens vs American/Western sunscreens. I keep reading that they're better and that we're behind the times, regarding sun protection formulations.
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with Asian sunscreens, as they are regulated differently. In europe, many of the chemical sunscreens do have filters that are slightly better at filtering out UVA. Regardless, sun protection involves wearing sun protective clothing and avoiding the sun during peak hours too.

A question for sunscreen reapplication: I read current chemical sunscreen actives break down in response to direct exposure to daylight, not just from the passage of time, so if I apply a liberal amount of sunscreen in the morning and stay indoor all day, do I need to reapply every two hours? What about physical sunscreen? Does it break down from exposure to UV radiation? If not, why do we have to reapply when we are not sweating or swimming? Thank you :)
@DrDrayzday
@DrDrayzday 7 жыл бұрын
The guidelines don't go in that deep. Sunscreen get rubbed off throughout the day and should be reapplied. If indoors all day, a couple applications probably fine.

I got my prescription for .05% Tretinoin today to address anti aging. You answered my question yesterday about following the same routine as you've been doing for the Differin....moisturizer first. I have mature, dry & sensitive skin so I'm trying to be very careful and keep my skin hydrated.

Hi, I have been using differin for 9 weeks now. Before I started I had small bumps on forehead and cystic acne on cheeks/edge of face. After the first few weeks I noticed overall skin texture improved and most bumps on forehead gone. I have continued use with very simple skin care routine as directed. I have started breaking out badly on both cheeks and under chin too around weeks 8-9. Does this mean differin isn’t likely to work for me? Or could it be a late purge? I plan to continue use to give it a bit longer but frustrating it’s started getting worse near the 12 weeks mark. Thanks for your videos
