As someone who loves makeup and has a lot of fun with it, I think the KZbin makeup rise along with all the skin treatment commercials that were so popular in the 90s and early 2000s, really distorted acne as a medical condition. I don't think people see skin care as medical and that leads people to listen to beauty experts for medical and science information. Also, it can feel daunting to get information from your doctors. There isn't much room for that in the current medical system and it can be so challenging and costly to see a dermatologist.

I’m glad you confirmed my suspicions. So I was using the Neutrogena blackhead scrub with 2%SA and I left it on my skin longer than usual because I rationalized that the longer it’s on, the more effective. To hydrate, I put on the neutrogena hydro boost gel cream for extra dry skin (first time using- no stinging), then I put on my St Ives renewing collagen and elastin moisturizer I’ve been using for years and BUUURRRRNNNNN. I was shocked. It completely stung my face and I freaked out. I washed my face a couple of hours later. I thought it was the hydro boost but when I put on the st Ives it still stung a bit. Should I discontinue the St Ives? Definitely not going to let the SA wash sit on my wash again!

I use adapelene, and find I still need a bit more exfoliation, and a bit more acne prevention. I find many of the face wash AHAs, and washcloths, to be more irritating/drying than my favorite leave on products. I alternate in the morning between two: the Paula's Choice 2% Salicylic Acid Liquid, which I believe is witch hazel based and quite gentle to me, and the Paula's Choice RESIST Daily Smoothing Treatment with 5% AHA for dry skin, which is actually quite creamy and hydrating to my skin. The BHA liquid if I have extra pimples, the AHA liquid if I need some exfoliation, and neither if I'm feeling too dry. Yes they are more expensive, but you can often get them on sale, and I use so little that 1 bottle will last me about a year. Also Paula's Choice are always fragrance free and essential oil free, and they've seemed to crack the nut of non-irritating products for me, and I always feel my skin looks so good when I use them. So for me it's worth it!

So I’m taking the gentle approach for now. I’ve been using the Hada Labo super plumping gel cream which has 5% urea & I find it gently exfoliates my skin enough. I don’t need more. I do use the COSRx gentle bha a few times a week or as needed for clogs. But definitely not daily anymore. My skin is so much happier & less dry. Once I’m healed, I’m going to work the retin a back in slowly & ask my doctor for a .025% prescription instead of .05%.

Shannon Graham, the same thing happened to me with the overdoing the actives (per the YTers). I healed my skin following Dr.Drays great advice and now, 8 months later, am starting very slowly with the Retin A .025. I hope I can succeed this time. Good luck to you!
@ShanGooFan7 жыл бұрын
Jeannie 5766 Thanks. I was having great results with the retin a .05% until fall/winter struck & we lost all of our humidity here in MI. Between acid & retin a, I really damaged my moisture barrier. To the point I think I developed fungal acne. I was at a point where products would work for about 2 weeks and then I’d start breaking out. So I’m only using products that don’t feed fungal acne & very few actives. My skin is so much less dry/dehydrated and clearer. Ironically, many of Dr. Dray’s favorite products don’t feed fungal acne. This past year has been quite the skincare journey. I’m going to give my skin a few more weeks and slowly work the retin a .025% back in to my routine. Good luck to you too!

Shannon Graham. Thanks and stay warm up there. A cream that has been really soothing for my irritation from RA is Aveeno Ultra-Calming Night Cream. It has colloidal oatmeal. I have even been using it as a RA mixer as a way to ease in to the medication. I’ve tried pricy creams but this one doesn’t irritate.

I am so happy that I have found your channel! I was the person that was applying TONS of products to my skin trying to combat all my issues. I was also that person that used a mechanical exfoliant every single day for a long time. I have reduced the amount of product I put on my face and I don't use a mechanical exfoliant any more and my skin has never looked better. I have extremely oily skin on my forehead and nose and dry skin around my mouth and chin and I have suffered from a considerable amount of acne since I was 12. So now I massage argan oil on my face and remove with a warm, wet cloth to remove my makeup at night. Every morning and every night (after removing my makeup at night) I wipe my face with a pad using Dickinson's witch hazel. Then I use a salicylic acid wash (Skinceuticals LHA Cleansing Ge)l in the morning and a benzoyl peroxide acne wash (Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask) at night followed by a moisturizer (Skinceuticals Daily Moisture) every day and night and differin at night, then finally a bit of organ oil left on my face. I have been following this skincare regime for several months now and my skin has never looked better! A lot of that is thanks to you!!

Excellent vlog. Rewatching on a quiet Sunday. Us old gals are always in a hurry to reverse many years of skin abuse. Sunscreen and and a BHA wash has made a huge difference in the appearance and feel of my 62 year old epidermis. Patience along with the other two products have improved my skin and saved my pocketbook. Thanks for the great advice.

Thank you so much! There are so many mixed messages about exfoliation out there. I used to be an over exfoliator - Buff puffs, scrubs, brushes, chemicals, etc. For decades. I convinced myself I wasn't clean if I didn't exfoliate my face, my makeup didn't go on as smoothly, etc. I finally kicked the habit just recently when I realized I just don't need it.

Shannon Wood as she mentioned previously by doing a review on Bio oil and how effective is it overall and on stretch marks,so she mentioned that once you have them there is nothing you can do to get rid of them except lasers...so 😞

Thanks Andrea for another useful video. Many of the things you say, are things I believe in, because it just makes sense. I hear 40 yr olds speak of "their mature skin". Maybe it's me, it doesn't sound/seem right. Their skin looks fine, unless their makeup is covering it, but I don't think so.

I have had great results with a CVS product from their Skin + Pharmacy line. It is the Glycolic Cream Cleanser in the Anti-Aging line. I believe it received the Dr Dray approval during one of your "rip 'em a new one" tours of CVS.:) It is gentle with hyaluronic acid and has licorice root. The foam/cream formula allows it to stay put for a few minutes without running into your eye and mouth areas. Your videos truly clarify a lot of questions that people have about skin care. Thanks as always.

9:15 ah wow.. I do just that with 7% glycolic by the ordinary, I find it too strong so I mix it with my face cleanser in the evening and wash it off... I may apply it directly once or twice a week but more than that... I mean as a human there is a limit to how smooth my skin can be before I look like an octopus right? ;)

I've been using retinol treatment for over 3 years and never did any exfoliating and now I start to do that once a week with Sidmool green tea peeling, I find my skin so smooth and it is so effective for nose chin some oily areas!!

I just started a higher prescription for tretenoin and am having some light peeling. I was searching for retin a/peeling videos. The first one I viewed was a gal recommending a glycolic acid toner followed by an aha to deal with the peeling. I turned it off and came “running to mama” by searching your videos. 😆. This exfoliating video addressed all my concerns and my skin will thank you, I’m sure. You are a godsend, Dr. Dray.

I also lightened up on the makeup, I used to glob it on. My skin thanks me for it! Also, I now cover both of my babies faces with sunscreen everyday, as well as myself. ( Something I never did before) so thank you for your videos!!!

Great video Dr. Dray! This is very helpful and I realize I need to change some of my ways! I think I am overdoing it! I recently switched to glycolic acid because I am expecting and have her add so much conflicting information about salicylic acid and its safety. Do you have any thoughts on this? I would love to see a video about things to avoid and things that are safe for pregnancy skin care! Especially for those who are experiencing break outs.

Hi Andrea, I am new to your channel, but already I find what you say is very sensible. Thank you. There is a newish line of skincare products NIOD (belongs to Deciem as The Ordinary.) that is quite technologically advanced. This line offers NAAP - Non-Asid Asid Precursor, that suppose to have the benefits of other chemical types of exfoliators without irritation. Would you be so kind as to look at it and give your opinion? Thank you again for your effort. Love, Elena
