Merino was always a more defensive 8 who can also play 6, people complaining about his creativity have unrealistic expectations for the player. Yes, I am standing up for fellow Arsenal supporters. My Fellow Gunners are not uneducated because they had some bad information. "blaming the player for not matching your uneducated expectations" Alright, we will go here. Uneducated? People did go and do research into Merino and we can see this by the volume of Merino clips that had hundreds of thousands of views. I.E. DailyOP Football got nearly 400k views talking about how Merino would fit into Arsenal. Doing research is the educated thing to do, so much so that you can't get the highest level of education without knowing how to do basic research (I assume you have a PhD?). Researching players is something that even professionals get wrong. Pepe didn't fit the Arsenal system yet the recruitment team still got him. I guess every football club utilises uneducated fools? Or people can do research, get information which isn't as accurate as they'd have liked... But without watching more games then they have free time to count the touches, passes, accuracy blah..... They kinda have to trust 3rd party sources. This is also why citation is important. The educated will make educated 'guesses'' while the uneducated will point fingers at others and proclaim uneducated.

And it's not true that nobody remembers who came 2nd. In 1989 we all remember Liverpool coming 2nd to us. 99% of clubs don't win trophies so it would be pointless if the only point was to win trophies. Of course that's the ultimate goal for a club like us but it wasn't even a consideration before Mikel took over. We are performing worst than Chelsea currently and we have went backwards from 2 years ago. If we couldnt win the title the past 2 years, playing better football, what makes you think that we can achieve anything this season when we clearly have went backwards while other clubs progresses? Arteta and Edu being stubborn and not trying to sign a forward and STILL trying to make Jesus and Havertz as our no.9 will be the talking point of this decade for Arsenal. Also, right now Arsenal is hampering Saliba's career for a legendary centre back, if he does choose to leave for madrid, then Arsenal has no rights to block his move cuz clearly they arent ambitious enough. There was so many forwards in the market but arsenal refuses to pay the fee, and then continue to sign a midfielder and leftback while selling smith rowe for cheap is CLASSIC Arsenal.
@thierryhenry6742 күн бұрын
The quality of our players and finishing are not the problem, our system is. We lack creativity because of the static and conservative football we play. Signing players won’t help. Signing goal hangers who won’t contribute in skills, technicality and creativity would only make things worse. We have a good enough squad. This squad is definitely better than what we had 2 seasons ago, and we were challenging the title playing great football. The problems are in the tactics. Why are we dropping deep to defend, and not keeping the high line? Why are we not playing attacking football? I don’t want defensive counter attack. Stop progressing through the flanks, stop spamming crosses. We should play the most tiki taka capable/skill move capable/technical eleven. Two seasons ago, Arteta showed that he has the ability of prime Pep (17-20 Pep). But he now chooses to be Tony Pulis. The superpower of playing inverted fullbacks is to allow them to become your central midfielders. So that you can play two 10s and they can be push very high up to dribble and to attack the box. However, when we invert our fullbacks, they still stay quite wide. We never play two 10s and we don’t overload or attack centrally. Look how empty we are in the zone 14. We play 2 inverted fullbacks, we play a false 9, in theory the zone 14 should have been packed with our players. But what do we get? Players staying close to both flanks, players staying back, forming a U shape. Two years ago, Jesus would have lots of teammates around him to combine with him, allowing him to drop deep or swap positions with others to create for others. This season, when Jesus (or Havertz) is up top, his teammates are so far away from him. He doesn’t even swap positions with others anymore, look how central he stays, it’s horizontally static. There are average position stats for every players. I wonder if the club have the stats of how much the players deviate from their average position horizontally. I think there would be a big difference if you compare the stats of this season to the stats of two seasons ago.
@domagojhrgovic74192 күн бұрын
Well said. I like Alex and his analysis normally, but this is nothing, just a desperate cry for signings which is what most fans want when they see a problem. If you need signings in january to fix your team then you have a big problem. Signings can add more quality in certain positions, but when you have fundamental problems, it's on the manager.
@AFCbirmsy2 күн бұрын
It's both. There are definitely way we could be improving the attack in terms of how we opt to move forwards, specifically in terms of dynamism. However you absolutely cannot avoid the fact the left hand side is sandbagging our attack and unbalancing us. Some of the performances we have seen from these players on the left, for 18 months, has been nothing short of diabolical. You see the game in person and it's so clear, half the time teams opt not to defend their right hand side in the build up, and transitions, in favour of stacking numbers on their left hand side, as they simply feel no threat from the right.
@thierryhenry6742 күн бұрын
@AFCbirmsy I don’t care if we have zero counter attack. I want 90% possession around the opponent box, like 17-20 Man City. The difference is, when we are around the opponent box, we don’t overload the centre. We control the ball on the flanks and play around but not through the defence. We have to increase the willingness to play through the middle. To increase the quantity and quality of skillful/techncial players in the middle. The problem is that we are not breaking down low blocks. Trossard and Sterling are skill moves capable and tiki taka capable enough to do that on the left. Trossard might lack top class pace, Sterling might sometimes lack defensive contributions, but you don’t need it if you don’t play defensive transition football, you keep your players always in the final third. If we have to sign one player, it should be a skillful, technical and creative number 10.

The main reason why in 22-23 we played such fluid football was not really on Xhaka. But Zinchenko. It also helped that teams had no clue how to deal with his positioning and tend to press us. Now teams use his positioning as his weakness and use a midblock. Since hes not playing properly nowadays and defensive minded, we are unable to have any sort of creativity on the LHS and build up properly.

Arteta knows what to do, but doing it is another matter. He wants totality and no room for variables, dominance. Transition is the antithesis of control. It is chaos incarnate. The frustration for me is the reversal of " reliance on magic". It seems our controlled and slow buildup relies on magical moments for us to score. Conversely, in the last 2-3 seasons, teams used to need a proper moment of genius to score against our back 4. Now we only concede sunday league goals, and need to work 3-4 times harder than the opposition to score. We need the stars and ducks to align in perfect symmetrical order.

We don't have a single player who demands the ball in the central field that's in front of the opposing team's penalty box. It's always 'let's pass to the wingers' and hope they beat their man. Declan Rice won't do it. Odegaard takes too many touches and is always focusing on dropping deep and finding Saka, Merino is too passive. Ethan Nwaneri could be that player but isn't given any game time. It's unbelievably amazing how predictable we are going foward.

@GaryMFOak692 күн бұрын
This is intentional. Arsenal attacks the centre the least in the entire premier league, this is fact. Let me guess why Arteta does it: teams crowd the centre as a whole game model (Dyche literally said so) so we focus on wide areas. We are also stronger on the right. And losing the ball in the centre is much more dangerous than losing the ball out wide, where we can use our CBs and fullbacks for an aggressive counterpress to win it back easily allowing us to continue our possession and “field tilt”
@moal-shael75802 күн бұрын
@@GaryMFOak69 But you've got to take that risk, we don't have Salah type crosses to cut inside the box for a target man to score who most of the time isn't even there. With city struggling, this was a chance to capitalize but we didn’t. City won’t be the same next season, Liverpool will be better, Chelsea will be better Man U will be better. As fans it’s time we stop talking like we deserve anything and see the truth for what it is. Nobody is entitled to a title or champions league trophy, we have to go and get it but the way the club has been going the past few years, I don’t think we will ever get there anytime soon

8:04 lmao no it's not. The hardest thing in football is keeping the ball out of the net - that's why so much of every team's energy & preparation goes into defending and some managers make their careers off of telling their attack to just go nuts (Wenger). Arteta literally said Pep would consider himself the most defensive manager - literally his entire philosophy is predicated on the opponent not being able to score because they don't have the ball, this giving them the freedom to score all those goals. Scoring goals is easy. Shit players and shit teams do it regularly. Solid defences are reserved for the elite.

@Kogalo_Braviles2 күн бұрын
Here's the thing with our numbers last season and why they may be misleading. To score the most goals, you only need your systems to be fully functional in 25 out of 38 games. That's what we had last season, that's what we have this season. To win the most points, you need to be able to win unwinnable matches, those lucky wins that come in matches where everything else has failed yet you still got a scrappy goal or something similar. Now this calls for a proper striker and individual talent, not a false 9/system player. Prioritize a striker before a LW. Gyokeres would make sense. If we're really serious then get Leao too. We won't need to make another signing until 2026.
@phteven9610Күн бұрын
We are not a transition team, Gyokeres is a transition striker, he's not the answer. We need a high IQ striker or a world class LW or both. Isak is the answer but he's very injury prone.

For me, our biggest flaw in attack is that the players are over-coached to walk the ball into the net. So many times are players in good positions on the edge of the box and they're not interested in shooting on goal. Arsenal's highlight reel of long range goals under Arteta is not going to be a long video. More importantly, the long range goals have actually been game changers (think Aston Villa away 4-2, Man City away 2-2). Newcastle, Brentford, Bournemouth, and ugh, Spurs, are all keen to shoot on sight. We need to do that more.

On this channel in one of the videos I did mention that due to the club spending money on wrong players we were close to breaching FFP/PSR hence why we pushed the signing of Raya to the start of this season and not the last as an example (and you can check this all on Swiss ramble he has the financial accounts for alot of clubs too). It also doesn’t help that arsenal previously and currently have been poor in selling players and unable to spend wisely on players needed to win a league. It’s not a matter of if, buts or maybes the money spend in the 23/24 season was poor as if you compare it to Liverpool’s Van Dijk,Alisson and Salah transfer windows due to the manager having a large say in transfers rather than the people being employed at the club to do that job(Ayto, R.Garlick and Edu)(you can see the articles in the athletic and others where it’s mentioned arteta wanted Havertz, Rice, Timber, and Raya as well as Zinchenko, Jesus, Kiwior, etc and was the one pushing for the deals and that’s fine if the players signed were good enough to make us win or were able to sell for a profit if things didn’t work out), the people employed to do the transfers have limited experience in negotiating, finding a good player in the market before they become expensive, or potential superstars hence why the manager is even having to step in and ask and push for certain players unlike Liverpool(before Michael Edward’s left) and Man City where the manager would want to get a certain player but the club and the manager to an extent have trust that the people employed for that are able to do that without worrying for example Klopp wanting Brandt and Michael Edward’s and his team getting Salah. Hypothetically, if Arteta was unhappy with how things were run I would’ve expected him to speak out on it indirectly to the press and to the club & the club to bring in someone in a lot sooner previously to sort that out as it doesn’t take years for one to see a sporting director isn’t capable pulling of good deals heck many fans have been a bit dissatisfied with how Edu was unable to bring in any Brazilian or southern American talent or good players from that region despite being a sporting director for Corinthians for years and obviously being Brazilian as an example. Overall, it’s abit too late to start saying we should do something in January cause since Arteta was apppointed arsenal haven’t signed on a good player in (January) Europe specifically outside of England the last good signing arsenal made was Odegaard in 2021 (Tomiyasu unfortunately has flopped due to injuries, Lokonga, Tavares, Trusty, F.Vieira, Kiwior. Turner and Marquinhos were incapable of adapting to the PL, and Timber, Merino and Calafiori have just started playing this season it’s too soon to make a judgment on them especially knowing they’ve all been injured at different parts this season. The reason this is mentioned it’s due to the fact signing a player in the PL would be more expensive now than in the summer unless there’s a transfer request)

Arteta's tactics are the problem. We overload so much on the right side that we don't have enough options in the middle. Look at Odegaard's positioning, he drops so deep to recieve the ball in the buildup and he ends up at the touchline on the right wing. He needs to be between the lines as our main playmaker instead of getting in Saka's way on the right wing. Arteta is overthinking it again. His ego just doesn't let him do the basic things and put the players in their best positions.

@@jwkisira double pivot is what we’re doing now in theory, though normally we’re up against a low block so Rice is high up the pitch. Rice is best as a 6, he can drive into those half spaces but he’s not the facilitator Xhaka was on the left, even when he got into dangerous spaces he wasn’t particularly effective at creating chances. Sure Partey is best in 6, but he’ll be gone soon, you need to look towards the future of that position, which has to be Rice. Merino isn’t going to be that creative facilitator on the left, so moving forward from Jorgi/Partey we need to make another midfield signing

@@Flash4ML double pivot means our inverted fullbacks have nowhere to go. You dont buy Timber and Cala and then ask them to play as wing backs. I fully understand your point but respectfully I don’t think what you want may be best for the club. I think we can and will make a shrewd signing if one is available eg Semenyo, Lino, Lookman. The issue is we probably get priced out (50m+) and the position of yourself and other fans will be to ‘bite the bullet’, improve the margin by ~5% and that is better than reducing the budget for next summer on a better player or another position. You used Sterling as an example as a miss not costing us but that’s literally because Sterling was a free loan with some wage coverage. The main q is, why buy Semenyo for 50m if he isn’t definitely better than Martinelli or Trossard? Why not overpay on Leao, Kvara, Sané, Raphinha in the summer to properly boost next season rather than slightly boosting the end of this season. We can’t do both as we will look to recruit a top midfielder and striker. Hence what you suggest can cost the club quite a bit in the coming seasons. We’re far from needing that player.

I do get annoyed at times when I see some of Arteta’s decisions that seem to damage us in certain games, just as any other fan. But the reality often forgotten is that this man is taking us to the top during HIS FIRST JOB. The past years, he was competing with the coach that won everything in Spain, Germany and here. With managers having plenty of experience, more or less successfully, in many different clubs. As a coach, he is between a Nwaneri and a Saka, to put it in terms y’all understand. He’s done great things, but he will still make mistakes. Granted, he doesn’t seem to learn from some of them, but a) he’s Spaniard therefore stubborn (sorry for the cliché) and b) he can’t go on the pitch himself and put the ball in the net when Jesus, Martinelli, etc refuse to do it. Man city play like this & dominate because their squad are balanced in attack & have ball carriers with running power in midfield which help em a lot to quicky progress the ball from midfield & provide damage in transitions. Our attack are too reliant on saka, there is no progression from midfield, the LHS is dead & we have no transitional threat. Odegaard is amazing at controlling the tempo, evading the press, helping the build up in the 1st &2nd phase, connecting the team via passes but hes no KdB or musiala & cant speed up the attack the way they can, hes more of a no. 8.
