So basically diffusion is when particles move around the room from high concentration to low concentration but the particles don't do it on there own they just move about to find space and osmosis is basically like diffusion but while let's say there is water that has salt in it and pure water the pure water would rush to the low potential of water while the salt would go to the pure side of the water that has low potential of its kinda like an I owe you (because pure water goes to the salty side and the salty side goes to the pure water side)and if you put a plant in a high potential of water since it has less water on the inside than the outside the cell expands vice versus but put a animal cell in a high concentration of water it would pop because it only has a cell membrane while the plant cell has something rigid on the outside called cell wall
@Science_Sauce5 жыл бұрын
Mostly right, except the part about movement of salt during osmosis. Osmosis must have a partially permeable membrane to occur. This membrane allows the movement of water but won’t allow the movement of salt.

Just a small question say in one part there is water and in the other part same water + salt. Which will have more water potential? Here my doubt is that if both are having same no. Of water molecules then nothing should happen..... But still i know that the first part will have more water potential but plz explain why?
@Science_Sauce6 жыл бұрын
If you have pure water on side A of a membrane, and salt plus water on side B, then side A will have the higher water potential, regardless of number of molecules. Imagine there are 1 million water molecule on side A, but side B has 1 million water molecules plus some salt, side A will still have the higher water potential. In that example, side B will have a larger volume (because the salt increases the volume), but the volume has no influence on the water potential. Imagine zooming in on the membrane: on side A, there will be more collisions of water molecules against the membrane, and therefore more transfer through the membrane (assuming it is permeable to water). On side B, there will be fewer collisions of water against the membrane, because the water has been displaced by the salt molecules. Hence, more water would transfer from A to B, than would transfer from B to A. Make sense?
