Alex was born in England (Gloucestershire) and moved to Sunderland then to Scotland aged 7. His mother is English and his father Greek. I guess you are right that he has a mixed accent due to all of that and an aspiration to speak well possibly Queen's english. Bryan Ferry was similar in his approach, it's almost unbelievable to read that Bryan was raised near Newcastle and didn't move to London until university age yet he hardly has any trace of geordie in his accent and speaks like the english upper class.
