Why not get water from the stream? Get a trash pump and put an IBC tote behind the tractor and haul it back. We do this for our off grid "hunting" cabin. We have a 300 gallon ibc tote inside our shed that's heated, hooked a shallow well pump to it so we have pressurized water. That tote lasts us 6 guys a week. Just putting it out there.

Who would have thought finding water anywhere in Michigan would be such a hard task?😓. I know there is water everywhere underneath but you may have to find a way to go deeper somehow. I’m guessing the “rotten smell” you had on the last attempt was sulfur❓If so there are ways to remove it from your water. Keeping it Dutch has some recent videos on his well where he solved that problem. Loved the footage of your great family out in the boat with Issac😂. Dig a few feet past where you hit water, install the slotted casing like before and fill the space outside the casing with pea gravel. Pump the water and the pea gravel will replace the sand and clay around the slotted casing. Replace the pea gravel as it settles until the water pumps clean. After the pea gravel stops settling, fill the top five feet outside the casing with clay.
@9252LIFE3 жыл бұрын
How do you replace the pea gravel?
@geraldtrice48943 жыл бұрын
@@9252LIFE As you pump the water, the pea gravel will move down the outside of the casing as it displaces the sand and clay removed with water. Just add more gravel to the outside of the casing. This method works best if a larger diameter starter casing is used for the first five or six feet.

I hope you find a clean water source soon. If not, you can build a natural filter system. Cloth, fresh moss, or straw at the bottom. Then a thick layer of finely crushed charcoal. Fine sand. Coarse sand. Rock on top. Pour your stream water through. For as much water as you need, I would use a plastic 50 gallon barrel as a filter media holder.

The way I was taught was to cut the short side (of the metal rods) to fit in the center of your palm and the bend in the first joint on your "pointer" finger. Hold them level. Walk. When the rods move both in the same direction-that is the flow direction. Slowly turn in the direction of flow until the rods cross, then stop. Stomp your feet hard on the ground and count the number of stomps until the rods separate. The number of stomps indicates the depth of the flowing water in "feet." ie. 30 stomps is 30 feet, 50 stomps is 50 feet etc. When used properly this is fool proof. I have used this method for years and have never been wrong. Good luck.

I'd stop hand drilling on land that isn't working. I'd build a trailer to start drilling deeeeeeepppp! That way, you don't have to pay someone else, and can drill all the holes you need. I have a friend with a 450 foot well. Enough water in that well, to supply a small town, especially when you account for flow rate, fill rate. You tube has plenty vids on drilling wells. And building well rigs. Once you are successful with a Deep well, then mark depth of first encounter, flow rate, and continue. Later, if you want a big well, try digging one of those concrete culverts were you add one 3 to 4 ft. Sections at a time as you sink them. They are wide enough to fit inside while digging. The way you tried with the plastic blue barrels. You can go down indefinitely by simply adding another concrete culvert with Ur tractor. I live on mountain. Not a spot on the property where you won't strike water. Culverts.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYizYoSEdr1kfpI Build a rig like this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKm9ZoqeqpuhqpY I'm sure this guy will be glad to tell you everything U need. Somewhere, somehow I saw a little system for digging with anything that had a endless wheel or a tire that went round and round and it had a weight on it and turned the steel down into the ground. They built a little stand to hold everything in place and it just kept going similar to the systems that had the little lawnmower engine... something with a shaft drive anyway. A lawnmower engine doesn't work because the shaft comes out on the bottom and I think it had to come from the side. It had a pedestal..... like a ring and pinion in a car or truck. If you had metal and a old car rear end, small but low geared if possible... design a deal to turn a shaft and drill down. It wouldn't work in big rocks as thats a whole new ballgame. Another idea is to dig a large hole with the tractor and go down to ground water level or a little more if possible. Fill the hole with something like two inch minus so that you can still drive a sandpoint down through it. When you reach the bottom of your hole, stop!!! Wait a while for the groundwater to backfill the gravel hole and how ever much fills in, in a matter of hours or even a day would be your tank level. You pump that to a holding tank, and hook up your system to that. Trying to remember the name of this, its not the submersible but a "JET PUMP" and then put your pump protector in so that when the source runs low, it shuts off. I don't think its a bladder type system. I just can't remember all of what I did to do this in a place know for no water. It took me a week with picks and shovels to dig that hole and cover it after putting some rock in it. That rock acts as a filter. Anyway in that large hole was a lot of water after some time went by as it developed itself to better and better., the larger the hole the better as its your new tank under ground. I built a top to cover it and had a little travel trailer so put my system for pumping water to my house in it., I had to pump it out as it was dirty water at first but with in a couple days there was no dirt or anything in the glass but clean water., I tasted it and it didn't didn't instantly kill me so figured its water for dishes and toilet, even washing machine if no iron in it to ruin clothes. It was very hot outside when I hooked that jet pump up and started pumping out the dirty water and in a matter of no time water running down my driveway and filling that county road in front of my house., People came to see the dirt poor guy with all the water running and they were hauling water to their fancy shanties., Now I don't carry grudges but this is serious, if someone hooks to your water line, you can't shut them off. I lived in Beaver Washington at this time.... early seventies, I was a nasty looking vet and people wouldn't give me the time of day. Long hair, beard, bike of course, a trampy dressing lady when she rode on the bike with me. I would love to tell you that story sometime. That was good times and it ended very badly as she was my life and soul. She changed her mind once we had money in four banks. Its also why I moved back to alaska for which I am grateful

Sink it in 18-20’ , no slits to plug up, the water will fill the pipe from the bottom. Use a trash pump to suck out any mud and water after install. Then drop your hand pump and draw off the top 4-5’. You might be able to dig it in with a rented backhoe.

@@9252LIFE We just got water into our cabin. I was able to take a hot shower, finally. We are using a gravity system that I designed that is very simple. I have an IBC Tote up on an 8' high tower at the back of the cabin. I ran a 2" pipe from that tote down the length of the cabin (20') just under the soffit. I broke off of that 2" pipe with 3/4" elbows in two places - one at the kitchen and one at the bathroom. You would be amazed at how much pressure I have. Anyway, I fill that tote from another tote with an old DC Pump I got from my dad 20 years ago. I fill that tote from the creek or from my neighbor's well or from rain water. BTW. rain water collection is your best friend Chad! I can send you some pics and vids. Let me know if you are interested.

We have rain water catchment but doesn’t work in the winter. Also a tote in the winter would freeze solid up here. Need a well one way or another.

I hope u see this. I noticed u all haveca stream are creek runing in front of ur cabine. All u need to do is hook up a water filter system that will filter the water and filter in bacteria out.once that is done ur good. I help set my friends place up in Idaho like that he had a creek so we used it for his water supply for his home it worked perfectly and the water tasted great and he hasn't got sick from it yet.
@9252LIFE3 жыл бұрын
Our stream by our cabin is just from a marshy low area just up from our cabin. Not sure if it will freeze completely with a harsh winter. Last winter was very mild and the first in years up this way. Not sure we’ll get that lucky again.
@ranger81293 жыл бұрын
@@9252LIFE that's a possibility but what u can do is bury u some large water tanks in the ground.set them up to collect rain and even water from the stream.then run pipe underground be sure to insulate it well then bury it and tie in pipe ta a booster pump inside the house then run a filter system from there to supply ur place with drinking water.

I am sorry Chad about the well issue. You are a tough and resilient guy. Easy for me to say, but hang in there. Go to a quiet spot with a cup of coffee and think through all your options. Maybe there are 'yooper' guys there at the local coffee shop that have some ideas or experience. Network as much as possible. Maybe barter some body work for some professional help? I have no doubt you guys will overcome this. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.👍

Thank you Ken. I’ve picked the brain of lots of locals. Even Bushradical came here and helped us drive one and we failed then too. It’s getting old for sure. I talked to a few different well drilling companies and they laugh at me when I give them our location. They can’t get the rigs out here. Although I managed to get our 40 ft RV out here. It was rough but we got it. 😆

New subscriber from the U.P - love your channel! Chad, I googled several U.P. well digging contractors and depending on water depth your cost could reach $5,000+. I highly recommend calling these local professional oufits anyway and at least get some free estimates. Also, in the U.P folks love to barter and swap so maybe offering your bodyman services in exchange for a well might be a possibility. Also, maybe a Go-Fund-Me account could be an option so your subscribers and fans can donate. Don't give up, my friend, because I'm betting many folks would support your cause!
@9252LIFE3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jason. I talked to some different drilling companies and we’re too far out with over 9 miles of back road and trails. We have a 4.5 mile short way in but there’s a small wooden bridge that would not handle a rig. I did however get in contact with a guy that has a rig that said he’d follow me out here one day when he’s out this way and see if our longer entrance is possible.

@@9252LIFE Hey Chad I just discovered your reply now so thanks for responding! Even if a well is impossible can a creek reservoir be built to filter and sustain drinkable water even through winter? I don't know if such a filtration device exists, but if you could utilize that resource there's no need for a well, my friend. Also, there's been no update on the new house project which makes it appear your stay in the U.P. may be ending, especially without running water per your last comment. Can you maybe do an update on this subject too so subscribers aren't left in limbo about the homestead? Thanks and hoping the best for you and your family!

You should use high pressure water from a jet that is inside the pvc. You can work the pipe down a long way by forcing water into the pipe. Search on utube people do it with a pressure washer.

I seen folks use the bucket on the tractor to drive fence posts why not metal well pipe, also use vice grips to hold the pipe in place.

Thought for sure you would get lucky this time. Just a shame the cabin is not accessible for a well rig. Are there not any sort of extensions for the post hole digger on your tractor ?????? If not I'm sure you could fab some sort of extensions to a smaller gas powered post digger ???? Could also pipe it in from the creek, but would think the system may freeze up in the cold winter.

I used those rods many years ago to locate plastic water lines. Works very well and if you step off heel to toe back from the point the rods cross it'll actually give you a pretty close idea of depth. Only problem is you'll also find any wire, pipe or fair sized roots in the ground also and there's no bells to tell you what you're finding. lol Never looked for ground water with them. Can't help there. But, your ground water table seems high enough around there. Guessing you found smelly water in an area where a lot of decaying vegetation or the like was buried? I can't say but your old timers around the area can probably point you to how wells were dug back in the day. I know how they were dug back home in firmer ground. Guessing again you're going to need a hole deep enough to get a fair reserve or recovery level. Something heavy enough to hold the weight of the heavy clay falling in around the casing and maybe a couple foot of washed gravel in the bottom to allow the water to come back in the casing and keep the soil out. Just saying you're not the first pilgrims to live in the U.P. wilderness. Worth a look around afore you beat yourself up. :)
