Worth checking out TrueNAS Scale again, as it now supports Docker natively. Can be installed on most hardware and even the Terramaster NAS I believe. Happy new year and thanks for all your great content.

Definitely want to! As I have the skinned TrueNAS HexOS mess on the Ugreen for now. I have been watching the new TrueNAS releases and saw they have docker now. Plus you can't beat the price!

Awesome vid. HA running on a NAS has come a long way! Tried years ago installing HA on a QNAP - what a waste of time. Now it seems a very viable option with docker and ready to go. That's super cool you can get HA running right out of the box.. even faster (and with internal backup of the SSD's) than a Rasp Pi. What are the limitations vs say a DELL micro backed up to the cloud? Speed? Cost I guess?

that Lincstation N1, if that thing can fit a 15mm thick drives that would be really nice.

Not really sure. I had a regular Toshiba laptop spinner and a no name brand SSD in it. No issues with either flavor.

Happy New Year 🎉 I thought the 2 2.5 drives on the lincstation were for standard sata SSD drives. Which wouldn’t be a bottleneck in the array due to the 2.5gig nic.

Yep either work as I had one of each for testing. Just an odd config though.

Home Assistant offers an OVA file which can be imported to a NAS as a virtual machine. That's how I set up HA on my QNAP NAS and it has been bullet proof. Any good NAS that can import OVA files should have the same result. The import process was far easier and faster than creating a virtual machine from an ISO ( for me ).

I only saw the VM engine on the Lincstation one for now but I don't see why the others couldn't include the VM engine. I do prefer running the separate docker containers myself for HA so I can control things more.

Best thing I ever did was buying a NAS. Used to spend so much time fixing homemade systems but then got a Synology 432+ and never looked back.

I use Home Assistant, I am looking to do a NAS. I don't mind running them on different hardware. I am a bit sketched out with any of the major brands' NAS's not knowing what they are calling out to, etc. Feeling like maybe I should build a Unraid box maybe. Thoughts?

Usually going your own way is better, plus you have full control of your hardware and upgrade paths. I've built my own TrueNAS server and installed Home Assistant as a VM and just passed through my devices it needs access to and have had very minimal issues with it. 99% of the time it's been good the other nothing a simple restart of Home Assistant doesn't fix. Pretty sure I just need to get more memory as I'm trying to do a lot between TrueNAS, Jellyfin and Home Assistant.

If you have the ability to build your box then UnRaid will definitely easily get you into the game without needing to do any Linux command line stuff. Then you can run VMs and Docker Containers to fit your needs

If you have a really good understanding of NAS and computers generally, then try Unraid. But, try it on an old computer first. Almost anything will work but it will need two hard drives plus an external USB stick. I think that I have a pretty good grasp of the tech knowledge to do that so I did. And it took way too long to get up to speed so I just went back to my Synology and QNAP NAS's as you can be far more productive far quicker.

I use a intel Synology NAS with Docker as it's simple with very little maintenance. For HA, A N95 mini pc with HAOS, again very little maintenance.
