@@VictorFactor94 sadly it depends... "Evolution" in the anime series (all of them) are just power ups that the characters have because they are special. The actual canon of evolution is like pokemon, they just mature to the point of evolution. And thats permanent. The reason the evolution that the anime has is temporal, its because the characters one way or another have a special skill that only they have that lets them "force" the evolution to a higher state, temporaly.

I know it is a little (a lot) late for commenting but well This game was actually a promotional game for the digimon X evolution movie (the game was named digimon world X in japan), bandai basically asked the developers to rush it in less than a year so they could release it along the movie release and that is why the game feels so bad and incomplete. Funny enough the game actually sold really well in japan (mostly because the movie was a hit) and its one of the responsibles for saving the franchise as the movie its "based off" was planned to be a kind of a goodbye for the digimon franchise because it was performing really bad and the anime had like 0 ratings at the time. And what did bandai do about it? they just localized the game for a quick cash grab renaming it to world 4 and didn't even bother to bring the movie to the west, the result? it basically killed the franchise fanbase in the west resulting in all future games selling poorly here and finally they lost all faith in the west after Dawn/Dusk performance. Luckily Cyber Sleuth revived the franchise in the whole world after almost dying again due to Re:Digitize Decoded for the 3ds selling really bad and it only got localized because of the project decoded fan petition (almost the same as the reason we got xenoblade,pandora's tower and last story in the west) fast forward to today and digimon games are enjoying huge sells and while they are still kind of mediocre, they are actually getting better over time so we can just hope they keep up the pace and don't fuck it all over again

Now that you mention the flaws of the game, i remember that they were really annoying. But i fuckin loved this game, despite its flaws and clunky controls, eventually i just got used to it and got good in this game. I played it so much, with my cousin, cousine and my brother. I even bought the multitap just for this game, so i can play with 3 other players together. But i had even fun playing it solo, and then afterwards pulling my low level brother through the high level dungeons so he can catch up. And i think the train minigame is not as random as you say, you just have to remember the paths, i don't like it when the game is always telling you where to go or what to do, it often takes away the challenge and the thinking. And even if i had to grind so much to catch up with the evolutions, i had fun since i could visit with my new low level digimon high level areas and get so many level ups at once. EDIT: there are some things i forgot to mention. The ingame trading card system was so much fun too. Stealing the cards from my brother and vice versa, and competing in collecting was awesome. Same for the weapon grinding. Sometimes so good weapons drop. And you could trade it with other players if it didn't fit your needs. Upgrading them was fun too. Pretty addicting to farm these rare weapons. Also the music was so good. They make you feel like you're in an adventure for real

@@Blazikenpwnsyou sigh, Digimon games went up and down over the years. That's why Pokémon games are a lot better than Digimon games, though I did grew up both of them from my childhood years (including Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Sailor Moon). Digimon World was a fresh start by starting with Tamagotchi Virtual Pet aspect. It was fun and exciting to see what Bandai can do for the Digimon World videogame franchise. Unfortunately, in the following year of 2001, Bandai released Digimon World 2. It became a tedious and less fun as you played as a member of the Blue Falcon, and you get on a tank and get inside of a crawling dungeon filled with wild Digimon. The digivolution sequence in that game is unbelievably bad. After you reach the high level for your rookie Digimon, and you getting excited for getting a champion level, ultimate level, mega level, or a DNA digivolution level if you have 2 Digimon has their level matched each other. But however, your Digimon will devolve back into something weaker...ugh. Anyway, move on to Digimon World 3, the game is based on JRPG style like Final Fantasy, Pokémon, or Dragon Quest franchises. You have 3 packs of Digimon that you can choose. A pack: Patamon, Kotemon, and Kumamon. B pack: Agumon, Rena-whatever, and Monmon. C pack: Kumamon, Kotemon, and Guilmon. You can digivolve or fusion during battles that is a cool feature in the game. You can fish by quickly level up your Digimon, just like I had been doing to get megas. And speaking of level up, the game is a lot longer as grinding for getting/unlocking a powerful Digimon. Digimon World 3 is my childhood favorite Digimon game of all time, but it can get tedious to get Omnimon/Omegamon for Agumon (my 1st childhood favorite Digimon of all time), or Imperialdramon/FM/PM for Veemon (my 3rd childhood favorite Digimon of all time), and Gallantmon for Guilmon (my 2nd favorite Digimon of all time). Digimon World 4...absolutely horrible. You see that is why the Digimon franchise here in the United States did not do any good in the early/mid 2000s. Until they got right for Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth (2015/2016), Digimon World Next Order (2017), and Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Sleuth: Hacker's Memory (2018) after the success of Digimon All Star Rumble in November 2014 when the Digimon games returned to the West after its departure in the summer of 2008. Now Bandai Namco Entertainment is still working on Digimon Survive as of today, waiting for an announcement release.

I think the Digimon World videogames that has poorly received reviews for 18 years, some are good Digimon World videogames including "Digimon World", and "Digimon World DS." That is the main reason why the Digimon franchise struggled in the early 2000s back when Pokémon was gaining huge popularity and gain momentum into a juggernaut success thanks to Nintendo in the '90s and onwards. While the anime series of Digimon was amazingly good (except season 3/Tamers...let's not talk about the last saga). Anyway the recent Digimon World game was "Digimon World Next Order", the game is a little bit good, but the game was tedious and difficult to complete the game. It start where you get your Digi-eggs and raise your Digimon from In-Training up to Mega, if you complete the requested requirements for the stats to be completed, if not then your Digimon will die and you have to restart the whole process over again.

@Whirlwhind15 жыл бұрын
I actually love this game a lot, but it really isn't for everyone. There's A LOT of grinding in this game, especially if you want to get more powerful spells. A lot of digivolutions are locked behind higher difficulties as well as other oddities. The most egregious requirement being signature weapons, which require you to pretty much clear all of the main story dungeons in one sitting, which is ridiculous and I only did once. In spite of all that, I played this game to hell and back because I just couldn't put it down. I've got a level 154 Wargreymon and plenty other forms that I just keep grinding away at for seemingly no reason. I don't know what it is, I guess I got addicted to the grind.

When I finally got my own copy of the game a few years ago, I started it up again and, while I wouldn't say I had as much fun as I did the first time I played it, it was still enjoyable for me to play in short bursts. I only just recently got someone to do co-op with and it was more enjoyable for me that way compared to playing alone. I remember playing digimon world 4 on the gamecube with my friends back in freshman year of high school. We had 4 controllers and the game supported 4 man co-op. Having never played the first 3 DW games but looking at the footage in this video, I can immediately tell some of them are roguelikes (like the pokemon mystery dungeon series). DW 4 isn't a roguelike, and for sure the 4 player co-op would play like complete shit in a roguelike. Make another review after you experience 4 player co-op in DW4, it's absolutely amazing. Although I do agree the weapon system seems dumb given it didn't exist in the first 3 games, and the weapon system effectively replaces digivolving (although digivolution still exists, you have to start from level 1 making it complete shit because there is too much grind). That's my only complaint, that I can't play as a mega or ultimate.

I love this game. I hated right till you get through the boat area. Once I got past that the game really opened up for me. It's super worth spending the time on other gear slots and digivolving your character. I was having the time of my life running around as clavis Angemon when I beat the last boss. He was still a bit hard when digivolved but not nearly as impossible as in the first form though. This game was definitely intended to be played multiplayer. Especially in the early part of the game where it's almost impossible. It's definitely not a game for everyone that's for sure.

i don’t know why but i love this game. it’s one of my favorite digimon games. i guess it’s cuz there really aren’t any other games where you actually play as the digimon, besides the rumble and battle spirit games. and i also love hack and slash and 3d platformer games from that era. i do agree that it’s objectively not very good. i wish they’d make a new game in the same style as it but obviously with all improved mechanics. i want to try out the 4 player sometime because that apparently makes it less tedious, but i don’t think i can coax 3 friends to play this with me lmao.

You had almost the exact same game experience as me (i didnt google how to properly digivolve, so i always stayed the rookie digimon, but aside of that, exact same thing) I also went until the endboss, getting to him was not an issue , so far the game was pretty easy in terms of the fights. But that boss was just outrageously painful so i decided to just stop playing that game altogether. I wished they stayed with the overall game design of digimon world 1 to be honest. I liked training my digimon, seeing it digivolve, eventually reach champion and then in 90% of the cases crumbling to dust because until this day i apparently dont know the requirements for ultra lvl digimon.

@blue_rose7892 жыл бұрын
I love the game so much as well. This game was basically my childhood. Finished the game multiple times, went through new game++. Tried different evolutions and stats builds. I think you'll like this game more if you come from a jrpg background where grinding is commonplace. It might also be the reason why the game did better in Japan.
@BalsticMaker126 жыл бұрын
The game was made when Phantasy Star Online 1 cloning was the current hype in Japan at that time. FF Crystal Chronicles, Monster Hunter, then this Digimon game. It made me thinking that this game was initially not a Digimon game, but an original IP. Many elements are very not Digimon-like. Weapons? Understandable. But where is my Pepper Breath, for heck’s sake? It got rushedly converted to a Digimon game just for marketing.

I've seen this statement a lot. "I really like this game." or "This is my favourite game." usually followed up by some sort of disappointment. All 4 of my Digimon World videos have been overly-negative, so if you've come from the other 3, I'm not sure what you were expecting. Now, that's fine that you enjoy this game. My opinion shouldn't impact yours in a great deal if you enjoy it. I like a lot of games that are terrible, and I know they're terrible, but I still enjoy them. I think it's disingenuous to be blind to flaws, however. Also, I didn't mention the multiplayer because I would never ask another human being to sit through that trash, and I find that even terrible games can be fun with friends, so it would've skewed my view of it as a whole, or prompted a second playthrough.

I do accept the points that this review has... But seriously, you definitely did NOT know how to play it for shit. I get that you said "oh, I'm not one for grinding", but isn't that a requirement for EVERY Digimon game? Grind until you lose your sanity. Getting new weapons in the game WAS rewarding because not only each Digimon there has a bonus if you equip their right type of weapon (like Agumon with the Axe/Blunt type, or WarGreymon X with the Claws/Crush type), but the more you progress through the game via LEVELING, the more and better items you will get to not have an issue while fighting. I do commend you for somehow reaching the Final Boss at Lv27, that's actually amazing... But your equips were so pitiful that it was painfully obvious you would get steamrolled there. I don't even expect anyone to accept what I said other than maybe some of those who dared to play this game to a high point (as a total completion is impossible). And for the record, you should be thankful that the pitfalls only lead to a 1HP left instead of an instant kill and return to the base.
@Caspicum7 жыл бұрын
I should be thankful for an element which had no business being in the game at all? I'd have taken like... a 10% hit to your health. I think it's fair, and not overly-punishing. Putting you on 1 health is stupid. As for the weapon types, I did know about them, but the axes suck. They're slow and don't do enough damage to justify the wait times between attacks. Whatever weapon I used could stun-lock most enemies, and I found it to be objectively the best way to attack. I think you actually make quite a good point about every Digimon game being about grinding until you lose your sanity, I don't disagree with that at all. Where I think Digimon World 4 differs, is that I got to the final boss with relative ease, and then was handed my arse on a silver platter. It wasn't the requirement to grind that ultimately stopped me from playing, it was the fact that I was pressed against a brick wall for a credit sequence I didn't care about obtaining.
@DragoRidley177 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with OP. It was plain as day that you had no idea what you were doing in this video to the point that it was somewhat frustrating to watch. Sort of like a DSP video. Axes got faster the more you leveled up your Blunt skill, which was easier with Agumon because that was his forte. You apparently chose to spend 5 seconds on a weapon before ditching it for a weaker one and spamming items to get you through fights you shouldn't have needed one in, like Blossomon (or I'm assuming Mammothmon). The charge attack was not meant for attacking, but running away, as it allowed you to go through enemies and keep running without worrying about being blocked. The spin attack was mostly useless, but it worked well in Ogre Fortress. You could also hold shield and double tap in a direction to push enemies away from you while blocking. It wasn't explained to the player, so I won't get on your case for that. Despite your clear lack of combat skills (in this game), I will agree wholeheartedly on two points. 1. The level design is horrid, especially with that godawful camera making even the easiest tasks annoying. Fuck Venom Swamp as a whole with a passion. 2. Digivolution in this game is absolute garbage. How the actual fuck was I supposed to figure out that I needed to beat this sidequest with 1 HP left? Nothing even hinted at that. Or that I needed to drop off this exact weapon (with this exact level) at the shrine? Even with DMW2's terrible DNA mechanic, this is by far the worst evolution system in any Digimon game.

You haven't even scratched the worst aspects the game has too, Hard Mode and Very Hard Mode. To sum it up, they're basically the same game in Normal Mode but everything has higher numbers. Higher health, higher damage and a cluster fuck of grinding. Its even more evident when you need to aquire "Signature Weapons". They're like the most optimal weapon for each specific digimon you play with. Problem is, the method of obtainment is convoluted and borderline insanity. You have to finish Hard mode without dying and without closing your console. Its easy on emulator, but how the fuck did people do that back then? After that whole mess, congratulations, you got 1 signature out of 24. And bear in mind you have to finish the whole game on hard mode on the desired digimon that has your desired signature weapon. Meaning if you want another one for another digimon, you would have to go through that tomfuckery over again.

I don't think you're even able to sell the starter weapons. The four specialty skills of the starter Digimon (Blunt, Slash, Stab, and Bash) have starter weapons (for which you only get one based on who you pick) as well as basic Alpha weapons that can be equipped at skill level 1. Crush and Shot, however, only get their starter weapons, with the weakest basic weapons of those categories not being equippable until you have a skill level of about 90. I dunno why they did it this way, but as a result, not having those starter weapons would make it impossible to raise those stats on a new Digimon, thus they were made unsellable and untradable.

Jens701 not exactly. I wanted metal garurumon but I liked my weregarurumon I got it to lv 999. Why it took so long to get metal was that I didn't know I had to kill last boss of the quest with 1hp

I played it w/ my junior high friend and exactly when I found out after hours of grinding with the shitty gameplay I could only digivolve to Dorumon, I put the controller down and that's the end of it. No regrets. P.S.: That's a really beautiful name for the Agumon.

It's supposed to be difficult,and the bosses are supposed to be randomly difficult it's kinda like dark souls cause dying has a penalty too
@Caspicum7 жыл бұрын
But the difficulty isn't fun, or challenging, and the bosses are all over the place with no consistent difficulty curve. Some die extremely easily, some are pains in the arse which have stupid gimmicks. Most games have a penalty for dying, and comparing it to Dark Souls doesn't make it any less shit.

difference being, dark souls is hard and DW4 was casual right?

I remember playing this as a kid. I play it everyday just to get my wargreymon to lv 300... yeah I never achieve that after I got my hands on the ds

This game was actually fun. You got your opinion. A dark souls in this similar fashion would be awesome.

I remember playing this in 4 player co op at a sleepover as a kid. I really enjoyed it but that was probably because I was having fun with friends.

I remember this game - Yes old video. But the best grind places - The fort in the first level, and surprisingly the dungeons in the second world where the mummymon keep respawning to a point. Its like after 50-100 mummymon... Anyways the way to grind is just get to level 20 at the fort in world 1 and go to world 2 for the dungeons and just grind the mummymon. And this is viable to level 100, after you need to do the second playthrough so that you get more exp. And it is just world 2 till you need to up the difficulty again then playthrough 3 so that the exp keeps rolling in. and I think you can max out level easily in this grind method

Honestly I absolutely loved this game back in the day,now I will agree that it's pretty clunky and it just doesn't feel like a digimon game,but I played the hell out of it anyway,I recall just wrecking shit as Wargreymon being pretty fun.

i know old video but i remember renting this (when that was a thing lol) cause i saw "digimon world" on it. i thought this would be like that first game right?! i loved the first digimon world game so much! i was so excited to play it. when i started walking around simply killing things i stopped playing it immediately and shut off the console. i was so disappointed as a little girl holy shit lol. games like that with that type of top down close combat also just stressed me out as a little child so that was a huge no. i grew up and just assumed world 2 and 3 were nothing like world 1 as well so i never played them. like that even the turn based combat would be gone. obviously they arent as bad as this at all so im playing dusk on ds right now and want to play world 3 soon. yeah this game killed my interest in digimon games until i played cyber sleuth which thanks to the web i knew was more normal. edit: OKAY i freaking found out im supposed to play the first ds one. ghjgjhg i already got lekismon ahhh ill play dusk later again i guess.

The idea behind Digimon World 4 is very solid: a beat'em up Digimon game you can play with up to 4 friends. Too bad the execution was awful. Double Rapier with ClavisAngemon was pretty darn fun, though. After I unlocked him the entire game became a breeze. It is such a shame that 90% of the Digimon games are pure garbage and fundamentaly broken. At least the latest ones are pretty darn good with that Persona-esque gameplay and style.

It's a pretty rushed-feeling game with not enough content to accomodate the style of game it is. It certainly doesn't cater in the slightest to any casual players. And the thing is, for the most part, its enemies, and characters are generic enough you could replace them with equivalents from another IP and it would be basically the same game. Not to mention how boring and forgettable the story was. HOWEVER, I personally really like the game despite its many flaws. It has very few glitches, fewer of which are game breaking, and things at least make some sense when they happen gameplay-wise. It's a game centred around taking one of the 16 digimon and training them into beefy killing machines. If you set yourself a long-term goal, then break it down into smaller goals, then have something on the side to listen to like a podcast or music, the game can be somewhat enjoyable. I think you'd have to be someone like me that actually enjoys making progress on an on-and-off grind that takes days, weeks or months (depending on how frequently you get on). I understand why so many people hate this game, but it has its appeal.

FUN FACT: The opening cinematic actually comes from a movie: Digimon X-Evolution. It was a Japan exclusive that explains Dorumon, one of the choices in this game, and actually isn't that bad all things considered. It's not great, but it's better than this.
