DW1 is really a special experience, there's so many little details in this game, it's very "organic" even if that word goes against the fact that everything is digital, Pokemon Red/Blue gave you an easy and streamlined gameplay but ultimately it still felt like playing a game, Digimon World 1 really gets you invested in each area, trying to uncover its secrets and dealing with its gameplay cycle loop which is similar to Majora's Mask in a way. I think the pre-rendered backgrounds were very expressive, the surreal mixture of nature and hardware (which is also similar to the Digimon Adventure anime which came out later), I think that atmosphere is something that Re:Digitize and Next Order lack a bit, the locations don't get you in that same mood, considering that now the Digimon Story games are getting more popular, it's getting more unlikely for new Digimon World games, a shame because I wanted to see them perfect the formula and bring out all the best elements from the 3 games and go even beyond.

The art style of this game is just absolutely wonderful. It gives almost a post-post-apocalyptic feeling to it. It's a world that maybe was once a modern world that was destroyed, only for life to grow over it's remains and the creatures that inhabit it now have used relics of the old world to build all these nice weird little settlements. It's a style of world that you rarely see in not just games, but media in general. I liked later games like ReDigitize and Next Order plenty enough, but the worlds in those games all felt so sterile compared to DW1. Part of that may be the differences in color too though. DW1 had much darker and dirtier tones.

I Love digimon world 1, it was the greatest adventure that i have as kid. The premise is simple: You are in a digital world, this monster is your partner, good luck. You know NOTHING, you must intuit, ask and learn on your own, you are alone in a world to discover. poor young people of today who play pokemon sword and shield, which seem like walking simulators, yes they are beautiful worlds, but they restrict you from dangerous areas, they remind you at all times what attacks to use, they constantly restore your health, they never catch you by surprise in a bad situation.

Back in the days when the internet was less ubiquitous people used published strategy guides and it was my best friend while playing the game. Oddly learning from the guide was a great deal of fun and it was actually still a challenge to get the Digimon I wanted as the details were not always clear cut. Making it my mission to seek out every Digimon on the list and to plan out my strategy to get them all in as few lives as possible. Some parts of the guide were even obscured like the Ultimate evolutions (That were actually Megas) that had a big "TOP SECRET" stamp to give it a little mystery while giving you the clues. It's a part of history that is often forgot about now that you can go online and find multiple free text versions and some consider using a guide to be a practice "against the way the game was meant to be played". But I love it all the same, learning from that little book was a treasure. I went on an adventure pouring though evolution tables, finding new Digimon I would have missed, and just having more fun by being informed. Edit: Small typo

I was having a very similar thought just the other day about Final Fantasy Tactics, and how I grew up having a guide to it (and a few other games), and how often it's taken for granted nowadays that you can just look up anything you want. RNG is there for a reason, learning techniques being anything lower than 100% acquisition means it's RNG, but a guaranteed rate, means you'd only have to fight the one encounter one time, or I guess twice if they have more moves, but instead of a generic encounter functioning as a generic encounter with a chance of picking up their abilities, it'd just become an ability-giver who happens to be a generic encounter. maybe I romanticize RNG a bit but I think it serves a very specific purpose, in giving each player a unique experience as certain elements cannot be controlled consistently. i had to edit this because I wrote it like a stupido and it made no sense.

The air of mystery and how daunting going into unexplored areas was is what I remember most about this game. Also having to spend hours training to then have 30-60 minutes with a tough Digimon to make safe exploration possible... Thank you for explaining it in such a way that now I know why this game was very special to me when I was a kid: the adventure feeling. The world setting, the music, it makes my kid-self felt anxious yet very very excited about what lies ahead. Whoever designed the world did a really great job. The immersion is really there. Also I still remember my amazement everytime the zones changed. The background, the landscape, the ambience sound...it really feels like an adventure. I can't remember how many games that makes me feel like this.

Getting too fatigued via training or battle is actually not a care mistake, but it does lower your Digimon's lifespan by a bit each time it happens. You can talk to Punimon in Jijimon's house or Centaurumon in the clinic after recruiting him to rest for an hour, relieving fatigue and restoring a small amount of HP and MP, with resting at the clinic being more effective than resting with Punimon.

I would disagree on the old video being bad. Quite a few games I've found that are better on subsequent playthroughs while the first blind one is an exercise in frustration or straight up a good ol' miserable time. This one seems like one of them from the myriad of videos I've seen on it. When the player already knows is an entertaining test of execution. When not, a blind fumbling that loses it's appeal rather quickly. The minimum amount of knowledge to have fun in this game past the initial appeal for this game is rather high, rather tedious to try and gather, all the while playing tamagochi on the side is what I think makes people frustrated with the game and leads to the old video. This one being way past that minimum. With a hell of a lot more knowledge of course the game's goona look different! So yeah, I like both videos! Great job as always!
@Caspicum2 жыл бұрын
i had this huge reply typed up and youtube refreshed my page and now it's gone :( i'm a little bit mad ngl I appreciate the copium for my old video, but it was bad. I agree about first, blind experiences being valuable to document, and they can definitely be more interesting than cracking the game open, but my knowledge at the time wasn't too far removed from now, I just had worse delivery, writing, editing, and pretty much everything. The fact that I'd been playing it since it came out and made *that* video is more my issue. Had that been a first-look, I wouldn't hate it as much, but I'd still not be a fan... Mostly because of the scripting and voice work. I have this mantra now where I want to minimize the time I spend reciting oft-repeated information, or blathering on about side shit, unless it's absolutely necessary. The fact that any random person on the internet has given me 10 minutes of their day is a gift that I'm so thankful for, I couldn't put it into words. So I use that to motivate me to not waste their time to the best of my ability, and I think a lot of the OG script was long enough that it could've said something interesting, but it didn't. It wasted a lot of time, which irks my current day mindset of optimizing information delivery so to speak. I'm still not perfect at it, but I'm infinitely better than I was in 2014. I don't think you need a lot of info to have fun necessarily, but if resource management and stumbling through the unknown against fairly harsh conditions is something that troubles you (and I get it, there are some games that stress me out to no end), you will struggle to enjoy it on the same level as someone who lives for that, or is familiar with it. As I said, even with the translation issues, it's still pretty good at sending you in the right direction if you're willing to make mistakes, but there's a mid-game wall you can hit if you're not the 'adventurous type' so to speak. I appreciate the comment! The ones that make me think about things are always great, and I wish I had more time to respond to everything in depth!
@davidsburningdumpster87282 жыл бұрын
Oh, for sure you've improved a ton! Your scrips and delivery are so snappy that when you make me laugh I have to rewind the video because another point has already been made. But I would insist that you started good, most I'll concede is not bad, and became great! And the biggest feeling that ruins this kind of game for me is wanting to make every life worth it. Get the most out of it. Exploring is rather fun but training gets dull quickly, and starts making me push harder and optimise everything and keep focused and... hmmmmmm... maybe I should go code something with this level of investment instead xD. It's a bad habit on my part to think this way but knowledge checks bring it up the most. And your videos always leave me thinking and with the feeling I've learnt something. Great job as always!

To be honest: this is still the best Digimon Game out there. Cybersleuth was awesome, but this game has a less linear feeling and every area looked different. I had to play the EU Version, which had a major Bug that made Ogremon's Base. So many Digimon were not recruitable what made raising your prosperity even harder by geting more complicated or Digimon to join the city. I still play this game every 2-3 years or so. It sucks that it's the best, but I don't think we're ever gonna get the inherent weirdness of a PS1 game again. Not only that, it's also borderline useless to have those kinds of Pokemon (ones that deviated to the intended way of using it) while in this game I can have a brainlet Meramon or a heavy-hitter Coelamon. I love evolving my Digimon blindly too so that I can see how the game reacts to the way I raise my Digimon. It always frustrated me that the digimon had such short lifespans. It felt so tedious raising them over and over. I enjoyed DW3 more even though getting the higher-tier digivolutions were also tedious, at least your progress was permanent
@Going4Broke25282 жыл бұрын
To be fair, there is some permanent progress. The stronger your Digimon becomes before it dies, the stronger they'll be when they're reborn, meaning as you continue to raise them and they continue to rebirth, they continually get stronger with every life, assuming you train them properly. Plus, all techniques you learn are kept upon rebirth, barring you die from losing three battles, which causes you to lose a few learned techniques after rebirth.
@matthewkuscienko46162 жыл бұрын
For me personally, it never really bothered me that your Digimon would eventually die and you'd have to start over from scratch again, as I eventually just came to accept that it would happen sooner or later. It also made me feel like I was getting a chance to learn more techniques I couldn't before by prioritizing a different Digimon after it was reborn, which in turn paid off later as it made getting Monzaemon, Etemon and Digitamamon easier later on since they all need 49 or more techniques to be learned as a bonus condition. And truthfully, I eventually did raise a Monzaemon and got him to live for over 20 days (I think he lived to something like 23 days before dying), and I got bored with having him after a while

Love this game, but lowkey hate playing it tbh. I like raising a digimon, but don't like battling the clock every day. It's exploration-based, but you're penalized for taking too long to explore. If you don't use a guide, you can easily just be lost through a digimon's lifespan. And once you figure out how to make deep progress in the game, you may already be bored of the cycle of raising digimon. If you do use a guide, the game almost becomes too easy because figuring things out and exploration is a core part. Before the internet, I never beat it. I mostly got Numemon. Got a couple Tyrannomon, Meramon, and Vademon. For completion's sake, I had to come back as an adult and dominate with a Skullgreymon.

Why OG DIgimon World always fell short of greatness is a few gripes, such as: -The PAL version simply being unable to be completed to 100% by a gamebreaking bug that makes it so you can basically flatout not recruit certain digimon, specifically Ogremon after beating it the first time in the Canyon - Missing "appointments" with digimons such as Garurumon makes you unable to recruit them permanently. Wah wahh. - Where´s Weregarurumon?!? And Garudamon?? - Grinding for good moves being random and stupid, with no means to raise the chance since its just RANDOM. - Not giving the player flatout requirements for the new digivolutions, which could have been circumvented by simply giving you a ´mon that sells you the stats for digivolution needed for any certain digimon. - A completely mind-boggling power scaling. -Why does a random rookie Gabumon in the north of the misty forest have 2500 HP that can kick most Champion level digimons asses?!? Because the already padded game needed more padding. - Why do ultimate level digimon only live like 6 days so you can basically not explore anything?!? Fuck that. You mean I spent like 2 hours raising that thing just to get fucked over? - Fuck the shoddy german translation. - They wanted to include Vademon and Piximon as possible Digivolution, but not the ultimates of the main cast?!? - The Seadramon Sidequest. Why would you EVER think of doing that?!? - The Monochromon Sidequest. Shop Simulator, bleh.

It's new for me that you can miss Garurumon The game was made before Digimon Adventure Anime. In my opinion, Digimon is the best when not following the Anime
@Caspicum2 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't know you could miss Garurumon either, maybe it's region-specific, or I've lucked out each time. I will say, I don't think the chance-based tech learning rate is necessarily a bad thing unless you're a speed-runner. It gives battles a reason to exist outside of Digivolution requirements and Bit acquisition. I've also never liked min/maxing RPGs, so having a 16% (i think) chance to learn any given move used against you is pretty generous overall. Maybe the rate could be a bit higher, but i wouldn't want to guarantee a rushed playthrough of such an expansive game. I also like that you're not explicitly told what stats are required for what Digimon. The game naturally gives you monsters based on your input, and that input isn't externally influenced (or at least isn't intended to be influenced) by a pre-defined metric, or desire. I've done some delving on that Ogremon glitch, and apparently you can glitch yourself into Ogremon's fortress if you open and close the lid on your PS1 at a specific point. It still shouldn't happen, and should function as intended, but that's a neat find either way. I don't think the power scaling is too bad, generally a decent Champion or any Ultimate will wreck shop. The final stage needs a beefy Ultimate for sure, but it's all still pretty doable. Like I said though, the grind can be a huge brickwall for a lot of people though, and I totally get that. All that said, a lot of these criticisms ring true for sure. The game ain't perfect, it's far from, but despite it all, it's an incredible experience you still can't get anywhere else.
@javierguerrero70252 жыл бұрын
The anime main cast is not in the game because the game was released some months before the original anime And to he honest, the game is using the digimons from the virtual pets version 1 through 4, and the pendulums digimon from nature spirits (thats why there is a tentomon island with hercules kabuterimon) Also weregarurmon is in the game, they never finished him, and is just a pair of legs that crashes the game

@@Caspicum I agree, and you raise good points. It is still a fun game, albeit a guide game, and riddled with nostalgia and good summer memories. However, it seems rather counterintuitive that certain digivolutions REQUIRE you to make mistakes, that goes against all good judgement UNLESS you are specifically reading a guide that tells you to, idk it just rubbed me the wrong way. And I´ll retract my statement about the whole move aquisition, if its a flat 16% then I just got stupidly unlucky. I was 8-10 yo at the time, I didn't understand english at all, and, SOMEHOW, I actually managed to uncover almost all of its secrets. I guess just by trial and error and lots and lots of playtime (for example, it took me REALLY LONG to figure out the digimon were supposed to poop in a toilet. It just happened by accident one day, as I was casually strolling around lol). Gathering the digimon and watching File City grow conveyed somekind of warm feeling and sense of accomplishment. But the game also offered much more (in terms of secondary objectives) for completionists. Ex: the coliseum fights, getting all digivolutions, collecting every Digimon card, mastering every technique, collecting every player medal,... boy it was a treat! Not to mention the OST, which is a masterpiece by itself! Does anyone remember Misty Trees (DAY) track? So soothing and relaxing.
