Hi there Grand Illusions team! I wanted to ask Tim if he went to the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 1979. I've been reading the memoirs of Erno Rubik recently, and he mentioned that his first attempts to break into the international market with the Rubik's Cube was at that toy fair, but that almost everyone just snubbed his product. Would love to hear if Tim has any memories of potentially being one of the first outside Hungary to show interest in the Cube that would become legendary!

A transformer Rubik cube would be awesome. I'd love for Tim to have one and show us. And plus it'd make sense too if you think about it. I mean, the Transformer show came out in the 80s as did the cube.

Hi I have checked with Tim, and he first went to the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 1980, so he would not have met Erno Rubik in 1979. My understanding is that the cube was initially released in Hungary in 1977, as the 'Magic Cube'. A company here in the UK called Pentangle, run by James Dalgety and Ron Cook, was almost certainly the first to stock the Magic Cube outside Hungary. This was in 1978. See www.puzzlemuseum.com/puzzles/collectors/JamesDalgety.html Tim is good friends with James, and they meet up regularly. Tim has a number of versions of the Rubik Cube in his collection, including one of the original Magic Cubes, although he thinks he only acquired this in 1981 or 1982. In 1980, a company in London, UK, called Seven Towns became involved, and launched the now re-named Rubik Cube world-wide. It became rather popular, as I am sure you know! Tim has met Erno Rubik a number of times, and at one meeting Erno Rubik autographed Tim's Magic Cube for him! Erno Rubik has designed other puzzles, although many of them are similar in concept to the Rubik Cube. He told Tim that he thought it was better to specialise in one area of puzzle design, what he called 'spatial toys', rather than try and spread yourself too widely. He thought that was how you excel in life.

My personal hobby is collecting transformers. I enjoy them because they're nice toys, fun to play around and fidget with and I really appreciate the engineering that goes into folding a humanoid robot into a car or truck or some other vehicle. It can be easy to dismiss them but I think there's an undeniable genius to the way some of them are made. It's heartwarming to see Tim playing around with some transformers. (Though speaking as a collector while these digits are nice they are very cheaply made. The plastic sounds like it could break if you just look at it.)
@BornToPeeForcedToDrinkIt2 жыл бұрын
Same! Been collecting Transformers my whole life. Some of the engineering, especially on the collector-targeted ones, is amazing. They’re some the most fun toys I’ve ever had. 😁
