You for got level 10 Faux Pro Photographer. After amassing an online following and finding out pro photography doesn't pay well anymore and is hard work they end up making KZbin videos and selling online training and workshops to make money off of other photographers instead of clients. Their pro photography work becomes nothing more than an exorcise to lend credibility to their photo training business and monetized KZbin channel that are now their primary sources of income and makes them triple the money photography did alone. Scot Kelby is probably the most successful example of this.

I’m OK with this because it democratizes photography. I don’t really care if anybody sees my photos anymore, even though I went to school for it and did some professional work. I teach people about photography (casually, because people always ask whenever I have my camera out) and inspire them to take it up themselves, thus getting more art and beauty out there. And then there are the KZbin Obnoxious Pro Photo Snobs. Those people I avoid.

Shouldn't Level 3 and Level 4 be switched? A (photography) student's actually putting time and effort learning how to take photos. While an average snapchat/instagram user only takes photos to share. One's mostly likely using a DSLR or Film while the other's a point and shoot.

NIAtoolkit I meant level 2 as in the video. I really don't think bodies have a massive impact I started on a d3000 and now have a 5d3, tbh if I had the skill and lenses I do now I doubt there would be much difference. Don't like Sonys efvs and proprietary flash mounts and Leica is just for hipsters. Next stage for me would be medium format, probably a Mamiya.

When I "started Photography," computers were punch-card-reading-giant-tape-machines leased from IBM. My father took photos all the time, and I started with a 620 roll film box camera. I next graduated to roll film cameras with a range of adjustments. (Yashica 44, Rolleicord V) Next, I took over a Leica IIIa with an uncoated 50mm f/1.5 Taylor-Hobson Xenon lens. The final level was a Nikon S2 with a set of lenses, as my father used his brand new Topcon RE Super. In my high school years, the Leica was my sometimes companion, due to it's soft, flare-ridden 50mm Xenon. Eventually, the Xenon was replace by a 1950's collapsible Elmar, which produced great Kodachrome slides. (Kodacolor prints? Nobody used that, prints were costly and it was ASA 80.) In college, I began to look at 35mm SLRs, and eventually graduated to a Canon FP, observing the TTL metered Pentax crowd with envy. I got to use the Topcon RE Super for a while, but settles on an affordable Nikkormat FTN, which sported a Nikkor 43-86mm f/3.5 Zoom. OEM lenses were expensive, so I made do with Soligor and Vivitar pre-set and automatic lenses. (Topcon mount lenses, aside from using Exakta lenses, weren't available in "second tier" lens lines, so it was Pentax, Nikon, Canon, or Minolta, only.) I've been a "Hobbyist" most of my photographic life, with "Professional" leanings as personal computers and the Internet arrived. "Artist"? That's my old college friend, who also happens to be Mr. Fixit, buying "broken" cameras on eBay, fixing them, then adding to his collection of obscure/decrepit "mechanical wonders." These days, I "do digital" with Ye Olde DSLR Nikon D7000 or Canon Poweshot G15 and create long comments.

What the ascending number of levels suggests: You evolve from every level to the next level. I think the skill-tree or level-tree would be quite different than a straight line. You have a certain background and come from different directions toward the field of photography, so the path you take to your desired level may skip some steps or make some extra rounds or fly right off the chart. ;)

I take photos for my *own* enjoyment - the act of framing, composing and shooting is all FOR ME. The fact that many people happen to like my photos *is a convenient side-effect of the fact that photos which are worth taking are better off being shared amongst friends*. For those who don't like my photos, well that's their choice, and since I am not even aware of a disliking (and even if I was) why would that have any power to affect my enjoyment of the whole shebang of taking photos? :) As for the wider internet of strangers and whatevers, on the occasion that I upload the odd album to Flickr, people can "like"/"dislike"/comment/do whatever they want, *I* like my photos and I was there when they were taken - whether someone else sees things the same way? Meh, _"Whateverrrrrrr"_ as the teens say nowadays. Do photography for yourself, don't seek validation and approval. The photo IS good, because YOU took it for your own enjoyment. If your client doesn't like your style, they can go elsewhere, and NEVER expect objective, gracious critiquing online... you WON'T GET IT. Run out of things to say now - press the button, that's all that matters; having captured is better than not having done so :)
