bro PLEASE do another 5 hours, this was MAGICAL. something about seeing two late 30s/40s guys talk about art, being so sensitive and doing it so attentively and enthusiastically is something that is rare to see, it's pure magic, it's fuel, it's inspiration. The tension between being a maniac and "playing certain games" like the money/attention game is so palpable, what an incredible conversation man

My brain is exploding listening to this portion about Picasso v Saison & Quantity v Quality. What a way to frame it all! To shift ones perspective of this need for “consistency” as some kind of grind / hustle culture mentality, which makes it feel like some kind of daunting sacrifice of one’s artistic nature, over to a vantage point that says.. just practice and create in public. Because for every project lost during the “polishing” phase is also an opportunity lost for having created something, that in its rawest form, could outshine the most polished work you have to date. And you’ll only get better and closer with each attempt. It feels so obvious when it’s viewed like that. Thank you both. 🙏🏼 Hell of a chat to watch.

This is a fascinating conversation we got to sit in on and listen to, between two 'makers'. That they love to break it down, analyse it, circle back, and then go again. Two people who make art because they have to, thankfully they both want to share it with us!

Again... wow... 🤩 Funny note: I feel like Casey played the game, and with generosity, but he didn't really care, he just went with and agreed to your proposition, while here Van seems to be very engaged and you both are entering a state of intense creativity, enjoying each other's idea and reflection, building something of a tale around art together, with a lot of joy and excitation, in synch, and with a certain euphoria to talk about your favorite subject... I felt like I was with you two, and was almost as excited than you both ! Thank you again Jack... 🙂🙂🙂

I also think the way they approach their art makes it so these interviews would inevitably go the way they did. Casey is the Picasso to Van's Cezanne. While Van is reading books and watching films to improve, Casey is just creating more. So while Van tends to reflect and think his way through the artistic process, Casey just brute forces it. Van can tell you why he did something because he can remember where he found the inspiration, whereas Casey can't easily tell you which parts of the thousands of hours of imperfect footage led him to a particular choice he makes.

Van's work is like a huge magic spell that takes time to coalesce and unspool and enrich and take root. Candace said Van was the most talented Neistat brother...and it's that hugeness of mind...I liken it to this, Casey's eye is very near-sighted in that what you see is dynamic and right in front of you...where Van's eye is far-sighted and you see his route has taken him past pluto and back, so there's a trip, as Jack notices, where stretches of silence occurs, but that silence is as much part of the music as the notes. When Van said in the Niestat Brother series, "Strength is Casey's first Superpower." That was an estimation by not only a brother but a masterful eye of true impartiality. Van's third eye records dispassionately all around and his soul, which is such a feeling soul, rationalizes what he observes with what he feels and that's the elegance of his story telling. He sees the turning of the world, every generation, and yet there are emotions tied to that. How will the two reconcile? That is the journey of the spirited man.
