The Lover Speaks used to open for the Eurhythmics and Annie Lennox loved this song and wondered why it never garnered more attention. So when she struck out on her own, she asked them if she can cover it and they gave her permission wholeheartedly. There's no competition between them. They're all happy (both parties) that the song got out there and received the attention it deserved.

It was bit more than that. Dave Stewart started a record company I the 80's primarily picking up bands that had been signed by labels and then dripped after one album, on the basis that they must've had something may have been just unlucky. he signed TLS that's when she would have heard them. I used to know Dave Freeman yonks ago and he's a good bloke. the song is inspired by the book A Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes.

I think it's important to say that The Lover Speaks worked on this song with one of the producers of David Stewart, the Annie Lennox's bandmate from Eurythmics. So Annie Lennox was aware of this song around the time is was produced and released, in the mid 80s. She liked it very much and she was puzzled that the song didn't do better in charts. The Lover Speaks actually released it twice as a single, but failed every time. So the third time it was Annie Lennox and it finally became a hit in 1995. 20 years later, in 2015, the singer from The Lover Speaks said that they were lucky that Annie Lennox did the cover and the song was appeciated as it should have been from the beginning.

David Freeman on the song’s lyrics and meaning: “Lyrically, when you say to someone ‘I love you’, it could be to your kids, your lover, your parents, usually, you hear, 'I love you, too'. And then one day you say, 'I love you', and there's silence because that person has reached the 'no more ‘I love you's’ stage'. They cannot say 'I love you, too'. It's as simple as that. It is an incredible song not only because of the song itself but the intensity of the sincerity of the one who wrote and performed the song. So you did hear about this and was able to listen to it when it initially was released ? I really wished I'd heard of it then .. So many musical experiences not had. But was this in England where you heard it first?

The album these guys made was also a fantastic piece of work, pity they never got the commercial recognition their talent deserved

Had no idea that this was the original No More I Love You's. Before then I'd only ever heard Annie Lennox's version for the first 20 years until one Thursday in the Spring/Summer of 2015 I was listening to my music 🎵🎶 on my personal stereo and this song came on. I now prefer this version - the original aka the one and only

The 80s were so brilliant ...often think they happened to give us something to look back on in the 20s of just how good we had it...R.I.P the 80s you are sorely missed...🙏😞

Fucking fantastic! Thank you "The Lover Speaks", thank you KZbin, the Internet! HOW did I miss this? I listened to everything I could find in the 80s. Also people, go check out the Japanese 80s music, they had a great decade there too! If you have any other hidden 80s masterpieces, please comment here ... would mean a lot to me.

There's a song called "This is the shirt" by a band called Two People. For me it's absolutely the sound of the 80s. They had one appearance on Top of the Pops in the UK but then obscurity. The song deserved so much more. It's on You Tube. I think you'll love it, if you don't already know it.
