The Lover Speaks used to open for the Eurhythmics and Annie Lennox loved this song and wondered why it never garnered more attention. So when she struck out on her own, she asked them if she can cover it and they gave her permission wholeheartedly. There's no competition between them. They're all happy (both parties) that the song got out there and received the attention it deserved.

It was bit more than that. Dave Stewart started a record company I the 80's primarily picking up bands that had been signed by labels and then dripped after one album, on the basis that they must've had something may have been just unlucky. he signed TLS that's when she would have heard them. I used to know Dave Freeman yonks ago and he's a good bloke. the song is inspired by the book A Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes.

@@chrispease6939 Lawsuits occur because someone uses a song without licensing it. In the US, you can ask the music publisher for a license to do a cover, or you can file a form with the Copyright Office to obtain a compulsory license. I think it's important to say that The Lover Speaks worked on this song with one of the producers of David Stewart, the Annie Lennox's bandmate from Eurythmics. So Annie Lennox was aware of this song around the time is was produced and released, in the mid 80s. She liked it very much and she was puzzled that the song didn't do better in charts. The Lover Speaks actually released it twice as a single, but failed every time. So the third time it was Annie Lennox and it finally became a hit in 1995. 20 years later, in 2015, the singer from The Lover Speaks said that they were lucky that Annie Lennox did the cover and the song was appeciated as it should have been from the beginning.

David Freeman on the song’s lyrics and meaning: “Lyrically, when you say to someone ‘I love you’, it could be to your kids, your lover, your parents, usually, you hear, 'I love you, too'. And then one day you say, 'I love you', and there's silence because that person has reached the 'no more ‘I love you's’ stage'. They cannot say 'I love you, too'. It's as simple as that. All I did lyrically, I think, was put it in Gothic terms."

I’ve gotten the lyrics wrong for so long when I could’ve just looked them up, but the end of the chorus when they sing, “Changes are shifting outside the words”, I was always under the impression they sung ‘worlds’. With his explanation towards the meaning of the words and my realization, the lyrics strike so much deeper for me, now. 🌀

You know, looking into it I see conflicting information on that topic, so I'm going to retract my statement so I don't take credit away from someone most deserving. Freeman definitely put down backup vocal tracks though as did his partner and the keyboardist they brought in. June is a fantastic drummer and has a beautiful voice - particularly on lead vocals where she is able to layer her vocals with harmonies. She also collaborated with many other artist. It's criminal the whole bunch of them didn't really break out like they should have.

This song needs to be digitally remastered for modern format distribution. In so doing, it would become more widely available. It is an incredible song not only because of the song itself but the intensity of the sincerity of the one who wrote and performed the song. It is most likely a very real emotional response to a very real experience, not someone's understanding of someone else's experience, and not some manufactured talent show production synthesis.

@@dshmechanicI know I'm very late replying to you, but it is "exiled" in this original, and I think that's a better lyric. It's always bugged me a bit that Annie Lennox changed it for her version - I don't know whether that was deliberate or she just misheard it.

You cannot replicate the howls of a man in pain about love. The original was covered for this reason she recognized the raw emotion and art in his voice. It is unmatched.

Pity this isn't on streaming. The cover might have found a bigger audience but this is the definitive, IMO. I prefer the rawness of his vocals and production over Annie Lennox's.

I had the album cover poster framed in my home in ‘86 when it came out. There was a British radio show that played for I think a couple of hours every Sunday night 10-midnight, I believe. I recorded it every week, cassette of course, LOL!being from Oklahoma City there was no other way to here about The Lover Speaks, Kate Bush and the even played Joy Division even though Ian had already taken his life years earlier. It was a great time to be young! XTC was legal, 18 to drink! Wonderful memories!!

I never realised this was on youtube. Just one of the best love songs ever. I am of a certain age now and listened to this endlessly in the late 80’s with many a broken heart. I bought the album on cassette in 1986 and still cherish it today. Bit scared to play it now incase it breaks. What a song though and much less known than Annie Lennox’s cover.

A friend I've known since the age of 4 visited me recently, and we had a night of 80s reminiscence. Which included me fishing out my old ghetto blaster, and us listening to cassette after cassette from that decade. (Some bought, some my recordings from the radio.) And do you know what.....this one came on, and I had a tear in my eye. One of the most emotive tracks of our lifetimes surely?

Before then I'd only ever heard Annie Lennox's version for the first 20 years until one Thursday in the Spring/Summer of 2015 I was listening to my music 🎵🎶 on my personal stereo and this song came on. There's a song called "This is the shirt" by a band called Two People. For me it's absolutely the sound of the 80s. They had one appearance on Top of the Pops in the UK but then obscurity. The song deserved so much more. It's on You Tube. I think you'll love it, if you don't already know it.
