I'm sorry you feel that way, Diane. In researching whether to do this or not, I read the following: 'In response to the musical, the church issued a single statement: "The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people's lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ."' This was corroborated by multiple sources that the leadership of the Mormon religion was acceptant of this musical.

Your church leaders turned it in to a marketing coup. They ran ads in the play bills. As soon as you come out of the theater, you are almost guaranteed to be confronted by a bus with church information plastered down the side of it. I live in a place where I know more about Mormon's than I would ever care to, but many people know nothing about this religion. This musical introduces them to it, and in a very positive and humorous way. There is no such thing as bad press after all. Also, it's more about the missionary life experience than any type of attempt to attack the religion as a whole, and all of the runs in Salt Lake when the tour came through were sold out instantly.

I remember being a missionary when this play came out. The church made such a huge marketing push, and if anyone ever asked about it, we were encouraged to talk about it. Then within a week of returning home, my good friends who were not LDS took me to see the play. And noone out of the group was laughing harder than me. I've since parted ways with the church, but I still have very fond memories of seeing this musical at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.

It’s the only musical I’ve ever watched live, and it was glorious. There were Mormon missionaries waiting outside when it finished, handing out the book and talking to anyone who wanted to. They were very friendly. I imagine that if they’d made a similar parody musical about Christianity or Islam, there would be people picketing outside with torches and pitchforks…

I saw The Book of Mormon four times in London (yes, I fly to London specifically to watch musicals we don't get here in Austria) and it has some really, really dark humor. But I mean, it was made by the creators of South Park, so that is to be expected. I get if people don't like/appreciate that specific brand of humor/satire, but I enjoyed it! I actually saw two of the actors from the performance you watched in the London performances (Nic Rouleau and Brian Sears as Elders Price and Cunningham), it was really cool! It's awesome to get your perspective as someone who sees and hears it for the first time, also you're pointing out some really cool things I never paid that much attention to.

When the show opened on Broadway, the original leads of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham were played by Andrew Rannells (Price) and Josh Gad (Cunningham). Gad would later work with Robert Lopez on 'Frozen' as Gad voiced Olaf the Snowman (his song "In Summer" is twistedly funny for a Disney movie). He also played LeFou in the live-action version of 'Beauty and the Beast'. Watch the Tony Awards when the show was nominated and you'll see Rannells bringing down the house with Elder Price's big number "I Believe".

Trey Parker is a genius songwriter. The fact most of his work is hidden behind parody and vulgarity is part of the reason he's not spoken about more in the field. Like how most Metal vocalists are ignored and we ALL know how you think of Dio. Even some of the stuff he wrote for South Park is just amazingly put together. The song "Push" he wrote for "Lorde" (Performed by Sia in the Episode) is a perfect example of ho well he understood the assignment and made an authentic sounding Radio Hit. When South Park ends he's gonna become Broadway Royalty

LDS (Mormon) person here. I served a mission in Africa and I've been a fan of South Park almost since it began. I love satire and I don't mind satire that discusses my religion. Trey and Matt are actually very fond of LDS people and grew up around and even dated them. While this musical is edgy I think it is actually quite fair and reflects a soft spot of Trey and Matt for the church. For the record I didn't do a lot of door knocking in Africa but I did teach about my religion quite a bit. I also did a lot of service work that had nothing to do with proselyting. I worked in orphanages, homes for battered women/children, hospitals, and even coached a basketball team. An LDS missionaries life has some variation and can be very rewarding. Most LDS missionaries experience a huge growth and maturity bump as a result.

When I went to see the Book of Mormon musical, there was a group of Mormon missionaries waiting outside for when it finished. They weren’t mad, they weren’t protesting, they were friendly and simply offered to talk about it to anyone who wanted to. (And give away copies of the book.) Religion isn’t for me, and even if I were, as a gay man the mainstream Mormon church wouldn’t work for me. But I respect Mormons for being, well, pleasant and respectful. It’s a stark contrast from the rabid banshees many other religious unleash as missionaries.

I was incredibly lucky to see the Australian cast in New Zealand on stage in Auckland the week before our covid lockdowns in 2020. We were the last to see the show before everything got locked down. It was incredible to see a show that had not been leaked, so me and my partner (both in musical theater) had tears running down our eyes in laughter from Book of Mormon

I would love to see you do a video on the band Frozen Crown!! They are an amazing Italian band and I think you would really appreciate Jade's singing and also the amazing talent of the rest of the band! In my mind Jade is kind of like a cross between a female Eddie Vedder, with her AMAZING breath control, and a young Ann Wilson, with her power and projection!! Please consider checking this band out for a future video.

They are also approximating the classic Utah accent by the clear shift to the vocal "R" on Mormon. "Sihppin' mah reut behr down by thah crihck in Amurican Fark." approximates the Utah accent for "Sipping my root beer down by the creek in American Fork." The Utah accent tends towards closed, nasal, twangy sounds, and typically every vowell color you should avoid on a long note.

I haven't seen it yet on your channel... but I'd highly recommend the 2016 Cast of the Flasettos musical. I'd love to get your take on a number of their songs. A good place to start would be "What Would I Do?", "Unlikely Lovers", or "I'm Breaking Down". There are so many great performances in this musical. As a layman, I don't know all the great things they are doing from a technical perspective... but I can feel it. Love your breakdowns and your enthusiasm. Thank you so much for the time and work you've put into these reactions.

Great review, there is so much hidden within the show that its amazing. Some you would have to have really good knowledge of the church to catch which made it fun to watch when I got to go. Worth it! And like the South Park Movie and other episodes the music is so well done.
@cornbredx
@cornbredx 2 жыл бұрын
"Did you know the creators of South Park also created a musical...?" Ya. They've made a few. The South Park movie was a musical, their first movie Cannibal the musical was... a musical (they actually talked a lot about Mormonism in this movie, too- they've had a long standing interest in that religion). If I remember Team America was a musical. Plus you could argue, even if not every episode, that the South Park show is often a musical. They make a lot of musicals. 😄
@theassortedhobbyist
@theassortedhobbyist 2 жыл бұрын
Team America had songs in between and during scenes, but aside from "I'm so Ronery", none of the other songs expressed a characters emotions or progressed the story like how Cannibal the Musical or South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut did. It was more like Tarzan, where the songs were written like musical numbers but are sung by an outside voice instead of the characters in the story. Ironically, Orgazmo isn't a musical, but the structure of the plot can easily translate plot relevant scenes and emotional scenes into musical numbers.

When we finally go back to opera (2024 maybe? 😢), can we take a look at one of the funniest recitals ever... up there with Patricia's Doll aria, maybe funnier! It's Mireille Delunsch's La Folie, kzbin.info/www/bejne/maHaip2XrLx2kKc Rameau's wonderful composition, magnificently played by the Musiciens du Louvre and a bravura performance that finds time and energy to poke fun at a bunch of opera tropes. 🎶🎶🎶 We all need a good laugh. I don’t watch many musicals, but I absolutely loved Book of Mormon, I found myself adlibbing my own verses to “Hasa diga Eebowai” the next few weeks. Mother’s Day lunch, dropped my parents at a restaurant and went to find a park, but forgot to bring the drinks bag … as I was walking back to the car to get it, I found myself singing something along the lines of “I left the drinks in the car, hasa diga eebouwai. Though the walk’s not very far, hasa diga eebouwai…”
