Annabella starred in one of the favorite classic films of my youth, Le Million. It seemed to play every other month late night on the CBC.
@cattymajiv5 ай бұрын
At one time, and for years, CBC played excellent but obscure movies late at night. I think it was every day. After they stopped, I quit watching tv altogether. I haven't owned a tv in over 10 years now.

What a fascinating film from a very particular year 1937. A very British view of France with a bizarre element of music hall comedy amidst the piss-elegant snobbery. A delight.

Thanks so much for posting. I found the best thing about this movie is the actual location shooting. Getting to see late 30s Paris was a real treat. And David Niven sparkles with style and energy as usual. Unfortunately Annabella is dull as dishwater. She SEEMS to have all the ingredients to be captivating, but nothing. Paul Lukas can do "serious" very well, but don't ask him to do anything of a more natural or God forbid "light" nature. His acting style has not worn well over the decades. Still, your posting of this movie was very much appreciated.

Ironically David Niven''s first wife died from a fall at Annabella and Tyrone Power's home during a house party in the 30's. Tragic accident.

Paul Lukas looks so much like my father, although my dad was born 27 years later and lived till he was 94 . He was Greek and I can definitely see the Mediterranean characteristics on Paul , hence the resemblance.

My mother worked as a switchboard operator in Long Island as a young woman of 16 back in the 1930's. When a long distance call from Tyrone Power came through to his home in Long Island to his wife Annabella, it created quite a stir with all the other girls working there. They all listened in with their key "shut off" so they couldn't be heard. I asked my mother about the conversation; she said nothing but what time he would be arriving. But the glamour of those 2 stars created such excitement amongst the general population to cause telephone operators to listen in---I found that amusing and very sweet.

I am wondering if Annabella was the first to use her given name instead of first and last name as a stage name? She was a gorgeous woman and a talented actress. This was my first time ever seeing her in a film, that I can recall. I loved this movie, it had all the right elements, and the good guys won, as they used to do in movies.

i can hardly understand Annabelle because of her accent and acting, her voice and loud speaking is really disturbing for my ears. Ive seen several of her films made in english, with famous american actors, and i cant see why she was promoted as a good actress. Danielle Darieux, who was also french and played in american movies around the same time, was much more appealing to me than Annabelle. Other than that, it is a lovely movie that i wished was played by someone else for the female part.
