I work in the wine industry, and the pricing of the 'great' wines of the world is so sad to me. The wine she serves with this, 'Laville Haut Brion Blanc' has since been renamed La Mission Haut Brion Blanc in 2010. This wine has an average US retail upwards of $600. It's sad the average consumer and younger generations will never be able to enjoy these special occasion wines because speculative buyers and the ultra-rich have driven prices to the moon. But at least I can now cook a fabulous first course to have with my work-a-day Graves blanc for $25!!

This aired in April 1966, and Season 5 had just a handful of episodes to go. BTW - in May, she won her first Emmy Award for Contributions to Educational Television.

Tomatoes in a fish white sauce like beurre blanc, gives a very nice taste. Julia made a recipe of sole with beurre blanc sauce, she added Tomatoes and parsley. It's absolutely delicious. I would say it cuts the richness of the butter and brings a nice fresh taste.

She adds all the little things that are important but most don't think about. Like dishes that can be mostly done ahead of time so you're not spending the whole time with friends and family in the kitchen.

The impeccable manners of the gentlemen at that table are all but extinct nowadays. They all stood, and the warm expression worn by the fellow who gently pushed her chair spoke volumes about how dearly they valued her friendship. This is evidence of why we spend hours in the kitchen: to show our love for the people we hold most dear. A wonderful dish with a heartwarming lagniappe at the end. And Julia looked lovely.

I am not. I live in Dallas. I had a customer years ago, a native Texan, who wrote a cookbook, and he kindly gave me a copy. The last chapter was titled "Lagniappe," and once I'd looked it up, I became very fond of it, since it was so quintessentially Southern and I wanted to make an effort to embrace the culture of my new city.

I love scallops. For me they are the most luxurious and delicate treat we can have for a nice dinner with friends and a good white wine. Most of the time, I make them "coquilles st-jacques" style, but I will definitely try this recipe.

I say to-may-to, Julia says to-mah-to. Julia sure cleaned up nice for her dinner party. I noticed Paul was pouring the wine on everyone's right, I thought you were supposed to serve on the left. I have to say though, if I put all that time and effort into making those scallops, that would be dinner, maybe add a vegetable or salad and a simple dessert. How would you have the time and energy to make anything else after all that work? Multi-course dinners are from a time when well-to-do people had cooks, maids and butlers to do the work.
