The answer is simple. The talent is still available but the people who run / own the Big Time Entertainment and Music Biz and the mainstream media are corrupt banksters and gangsters, therefore they have no Class, nor good taste in Music or Entertainment. So, the most genuinely talented people never get to be famous anymore. It's ALWAYS been that way, but it gets worse with every passing year in the USA.

As I posted on other threads we Boomers first knew him as Uncle Jed and then Barnaby Jones. Then of course we heard about Tin Men accident on Wizard of Oz . As a kid I recognized him as one of the witch’s guard in Oz which is what he had to settle for after he recovered . Yes Buddy Ebsen had an impressive resume and was every bit as good a Song And Dance man as such greats as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire with his own distinctive style .

Older boomers like me knew him earlier as Fess Parker's sidekick in the 1954-55 Disney "Davy Crockett" miniseries and also in the 1958-59 TV series "Northwest Passage."

As I look back on my childhood, I remember I used to watch the Buddy Ebson detective show, Barnaby Jones. I reckon the show was fair. But, looking back, it was great because i loved watching Buddy. Such a wonderful guy. As well, is there any doubt he had the ability to do a mean moonwalk. The motion at :34 was a sign of the ability. Such a classy guy.

@@noam65 Dino was 6 foot one, so Buddy had to be 6 foot 5....actually, people's eating habits now are MUCH worse than 50 years ago, so younger people now are probably shorter than 50 years ago.....much less prepared foods back then

Love both these guys, so talented. Buddy would have made a great Tin Man (in Wizard of Oz) if he hadn't been allergic to the makeup. He was so loose-jointed and even his spine was flexible - and the long arms and legs!!!

A lot of these performers had spent decades on the road and in vaudeville. Then the studio system would invest in training and comportment activities. They were talented, trained, and hard working. U.S. mythologized about them, when the big reveal is practice and training.

Ah, the variety show. So corny, but so wonderfully entertaining. The people on those shows could do EVERYTHING, and do everything very well. Sing, dance, act, do comedy and dramatic roles. Nowadays, people fawn over one trick freaks like Bieber, Miley, and the Kardashians. Puke!

I was a young child in the '70s and when I slept over my paternal grandparents' house I could watch as much T.V. as I wanted. The catch was that they had to be all of "Papa's shows", LOL!!!You know, "Lawrence Welk", "Sonny and Cher", "Hollywood Palace", etc.

They were true entertainers. They weren’t the prima donnas we have today who won’t do anything without being paid millions. These wonderful entertainers didn’t need 50 background dancers either. Today’s ‘performers’ need 50 dancers to distract from their pathetic performances. And singers today use auto tune to correct their voices. Anyone can be a ‘star’ today by just being promoted. The decline in talent is awful.

I totally agree with what you say. The entertainers back then walked on to any stage be it TV, Theatre or a Club with a 'swagger' and the entertainment value was always off the 'RICHTER' scale. All of them like Dean and Buddy and Frank and might i say Sir Tom Jones gave it some welly. They were not perfect humans -who is? but they all had something about them. They all had a musical director and a top class orchestra and no backing tracks or the HORRIBLE AUTOTUNE. The entertainment industry is so fickle and the music industry in question is all based around STUIDO albums where all the tech in the world can make you sound wonderful but its all false I'm from England and shows like THE X FACTOR run by Simon Cowell makes these young people STARS but they never last very long

Buddy Ebsen was one of the most successful Hollywood performers of all time. He was smart as a whip. Didn’t drink, fool around or do any type of drugs. Invested very well and died a very wealthy man at age 95. We should all have the tough breaks that Buddy Ebsen had. Lol

Ebsen was still acting on the Beverly Hillbillies when this was filmed in 1970. The Beverly Hillbillies ran 9 seasons from 1962 - 1971. Barnaby Jones ran from 1974 - 1980. Ebsen then retired from show biz at age 75 and lived another 20 years till passing away at age 95. Ebsen was very shrewd with his money and died extremely wealthy.

Sorry to all the rose colored glasses set posting here, Dean Martin's lazy, faux inebriated charm always rather eluded and eludes me. He was notorious for not rehearsing, and it shows. No question SOME of his singing, SOME of his acting, and his timing/comic sympathy in the Martin and Lewis films was very good,. But by this time his manifestly lazy approach to it all, wedded as he was to cue cards, is underwhelming at best. Thank heaven, like Bob Hope in later years, they had laugh tracks...
