What people don't realize is that the Bacharach/David songbook are very difficult songs to sing, and at the time very few singers could sing. Dionne had the range that could handle the complex arrangements, lyrical structures and at times odd time signatures of certain songs. She's a gem and is indeed a legend during those formative years. I love her.

And many more: This Guy's In Love. Most vocalists today came singer Burt Bacharach's complex musical compositions. Andre and Dory Previn wrote and composed Valley Of The Dolls. Her range was and Is still varied: Where she could be so delicate, and a powerhouse at a moment's notice. Has her Doctorate In Music from The Heart College Of Music. I was so fortunate to grow up when those Bacharach/David/Warwick songs were coming out. The chemistry of that team was just amazing. I have a lot of CDs, but Dionne Warwick’s performances of those old Bacharach/David tunes get more play than a lot of my others. It’s like listening to an old friend. I can even remember the first time I heard Paper Mache - what gorgeous songs. But I must say that Do You Know The Way to San Jose is one of my all-time favorite songs. How do you beat lyrics like this?: L.A. is a great big freeway. Put a hundred down and buy a car. In a week, maybe two, they’ll make you a star. Weeks turn into years. How quick they pass. And all the stars that never were are parking cars and pumping gas. I’ve lived in L.A. for more than four decades now. That is L.A.! And that is a perfect song - in part because of the nonsensical syllables that Ms. Warwick seems to dislike so much. All one can do is laugh about it. Tchaikovsky hated The Nutcracker, too. It’s funny how artists perceive their own works. Ultimately, no one beats Ms. Warwick at her game. And if I were stocking a time capsule to represent the best of Earth’s cultures, I would most definitely include several of those old songs as the best of American pop culture. All the best to Ms. Warwick.

DIONNE!!! Oh how does one begin to speak of such an...epoch! This is what Dionne represents to me.... Growing up in Brownsville Brooklyn in a lovely apartment my mom made a cozy & beautifully wonderful home.... That wasn't enough! There was & had to be MUSIC to complete the picture! So we had Motown, we had Brazil 66, We had WAR, we had a bit of Philly, we had Salsa & Merengue, we had Sinatra, we had the Impressions, we even had Janis Joplin we had a LOT.. There were MANY a singers pumping through the walls at our house! And there was DIONNE! I try to put my finger on what made DIONNE the PREMIER voice in our living space.. What was it about THIS PARTICULAR female that seemed to take PRECEDENCE over most and more often that not ALL the other voices in our home of that time... TODAY may be the very FIRST TIME I have come up with a definitive answer to this pending question... I KNOW NOW why DIONNE was THE VOICE of my household above ALL others though there were runner ups ... I now understand DIONNE'S VOICE was the voice of MY MOTHER!!!!! DIONNE was what my MOTHER felt & if she were personified as MUSIC she would be like a DIONNE WARWICK SONG! DIONNE was the voice of a sophisticated woman of renown in her own right! BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY a woman of COLOR representing the DEPTH & MULTI FACETED ASPECTS of being a woman of color experiencing ALL THE MANY REALMS of the EXISTENCE the BEING a woman who is at ONCE CHERISHED & DIMINSHED... CELEBRATED & DAMNED .... TAKEN & NOT GIVEN ... THE TOAST & THEN utterly TOASTED ... INDEED the IRONY of being a so called "Black" woman in AMERICA! I heard my mothers SOUL coming through the styling & sultriness of the VOICE of DIONNE! "WALK LITTLE DOLLY" Spoke of a woman COPING with hardship though it was B side song it had NO LESS DEPTH than any A side HIT! It spoke of a woman determined to keep WALKING though her fears tears & disappointments THOUGH at times needing to "REVERT" to childhood times.. Because "It is only in REAL life....that a girl has to CRY..la lalalala ..la ...lalalala...LA LA LA ....LAAAAA LAAAAAA..." My mom seemed to RESONATE in the comforting words & phrasing ...the cool assurance .... The subtle yet POWERFUL declarations of a DIONNE WARWICK RENDITION of SONG!!! Ans so I seemed MORE ATTENTIVE to LISTENING intuiting that my mom was communicating through DIONNE!! And BOY did I HEAR because Dionne is one of the MAJOR influences of my OWN song & style.. I was TOUCHED as a child with the charm of DIONNE'S voice! I believe Dionne may have been my mom's favorite female singer at least at that time in our lives as she loved music and all kinds ... I STILL feel DIONNE captured something deep in the psyche & soul of my mother! Diana Ross & the Supremes were a force of nature & great talents! This is no doubt! Diana's vibe was at that time more light she sang happy & bouncy beautiful songs! I think Diana spoke to a younger generation I do not take anything away from Diana & she has grown immensely as an artist she is a treasured favorite of mine personally! In my mind I have always felt the two voices had much in common! And I have felt that both voices share a similar tone a tone that I find MOST APPEALING of the female vocal ranges & a delivery that to my ear was extremely intimate & nuanced at their very BEST performances! Both Dionne & Whitney were a few women who could share a STAGE with Diana & hold their own Gladys as well! When I say hold their own I don't mean necessarily VOCALLY I mean with semblance of grace & cordiality a GENUINE cordiality with little need to compete! I know Divas will be Divas but I am saying these ladies are BOTH at the helm for me personally of what music is ALL about.. I was never one for the BELTERS and though we all get a big kick out say a Patti La Belle... It just was not the end all be all for me EVER! I NEEDED NUANCE & LOTS of it! In MY book BOTH these ladies Dionne & Diana were THE FOUNDATIONS of what music means to ME! Oh there are others but these two in particular if I had to do without ALL but one or two singers... Maybe three? It's the three D's DIONNE DIANA DONNA These ladies are my MAIN MUSES I sing because THEY sang TO ME!!! & they MADE ME want to sing! Again there are others.. But these are my staples TOGETHER they encompass ALL that I want & EXPECT from GOOD music from a FEMALE! God BLESS THEM ALL! AND I am so happy to see Dionne releasing new music .. I LOVE her continuous drive !!!! It is SO inspiring for us singers! BRAVO DW!!! . .

I like the way she shuts down topics she feels no need to discuss. You go Dionne. So sassy.
