When he torched off the bubbles in the black layer he burnt off the mould release that's why it's only stuck above the level of the black resin

Its because its cheap silicone. With high grade silicone you won't even need mold release.
@MarkLindsayCNC6 жыл бұрын
Even with the "issues" you had, this is by far one of my favorite projects you've done. I'm 100% with you on the depth created by some of the gears sinking while others started to float. The black background was perfect for this project. Really excellent, Peter!
@peterbrownwastaken6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mark! I really appreciate that.

If you have the time and do it again, I'd do a lot of layers with a lot less gears per. Give it a ton of depth, but the same overall number of elements.

I think the release agent broke down from the heat of the torch. Perhaps remove the project between pours and re apply release agent and pop it back in.
@peterbrownwastaken6 жыл бұрын
I can see that. I have to say, it was crazy surprising. I've never seen silicone stick like that.
@Saikou02706 жыл бұрын
Silicone also breaks down in the presence of high temperature as far as I am aware, considering the thin layer that was taken away I wouldn't be surprised if the edge was worn down after repeatedly being heated throughout the pans lifetime. Although that's just my guess.
@he-mansuncle76616 жыл бұрын
Peter Brown if the resin isn't properly mixed, this can also make the silicone stick. I believe that it wasn't the mold release that caused the clock to stick. Most likely it was the silicone pan itself. The thin silicone molds that are made for a different purpose do have a limited amount of pours until it stops loosing the non stick properties. I have the same silicone pan and it's happened to me on more than one occasion. Sometimes you can remove the resin piece from the mold before the initial cure and you can get a few more uses out of the silicone pan.
@daintyturtle57116 жыл бұрын
Peter Brown I work with resin a lot and have ruined silicone molds by over torching them. It compromises the silicone and causes the resin to bind to it
@wupme6 жыл бұрын
It happened to me too, and i never torched or used a heatgun on that silicone mold. It even looks the exact same color as the one peter has. And it also only stuck on the sides, the last like 10mm of the edge. Peter was yours also made in Italy? Also this has never happened to my selfmade silicone molds.

I think when you heated the bubbles, you may have reduced the effectiveness of the release, if you do something like this again, maybe demould after each layer and spray more release, put it back in the mould and pour the next. btw, Amazon do steampunk cogs. I think i would also have started with the clear, added another clear to put the cogs on, then the final black, would have made a nicer 'finished' front.
@maysar41596 жыл бұрын
Sparky Projects Never worked with it, but i assumed it was the time it spent just sitting on the pan. Kind of like other sprays, it dries and doesnt work or runs down to the lower parts. Not sure though.
@sparkyprojects6 жыл бұрын
Well it may dry out naturally, but the heat would quicken that or evaporate it.
@insanejughead6 жыл бұрын
Sparky Projects From what you said, it would make sense that the heat burned off the mold release after the initial, black resin layer, as only the clear layers stuck.

Fabulous piece. The exact same thing happened to me. I destroyed a silicone mould I had and it was due to the resin getting too hot and bonding to the silicone. It's because the blow torch is too hot and super heats the resin. Better to use just a lighter.

I think that when the flame licked over the areas of mold release that had yet to be covered by the resin it stopped that layer of mold release from working possibly? The black layer seemed to release perfectly well but the layers that came afterwards seemed to stick.
