I feel this is the best ever piece of piano playing in a rock band. He just ties every other instrument together like a family and it's also such an important instrument in this song, if it wasn't used in this song this song would never be this epic. I've always considered Mark's guitar playing as the best in the world but Alan on the piano is brilliant. He used to play with Eric Clapton and is the only player in Clapton's band to ever leave on his own accord and he moved to Dire Straits and that says it all. The Piano and Alan is as much of the star in this song as Mark and his guitar. I also love the bass and the rhythm guitars as well but really love just how delicate Terry is on the drums when he's just tinkling the cymbals gently and Alan is gently doing the same on the high notes on the piano, so much power and so much delicate playing is just bloody awesome. And at 56 years old I've loved this song for 40 years and my love for it gets better and stronger by the year. Sometimes when I'm listening thru headphones I just tear up with happiness due to such beautiful music. The main reason they're so bloody brilliant is because they're all happy smiling and jamming to something they love doing

This song was inspired whilst Mark Knopfler was on a dIRE sTRAITS tour bus along Telegraph Road in the USA whilst also reading the book “Growth of the Soil” by Norwegian author Knut Hamsun when he wrote this song. Growth of the Soil is regarded as a historical classic. ... The novel exemplified Hamsun's aversion to modernity and inclination towards simplicity.

Jesus, that was INTENSE, gets me every time. Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are probably two of the VERY BEST guitarists of modern times, if not THE best. But their styles are quite different I think. Mark's fingers dance ACROSS the strings, whereas David's dance ALONG the strings. Both BRILLIANT, and capable of stirring your innermost soul. Both Dire Steaits AND Pink Floyd are just beyond compare, both bands have BRILLIANT Drummers, Keyboard players, Bass players, AND guitarists.

I was 16 and I will never forget laying on the livingroom floor, reading the lyrics and listening, over and over again. Saw them live in 86 ❤ Do not forget Mark Knopfler as a storyteller. He always means every word he is singing and in every song, there is a story! Then and now! I love it, and I feel really lucky to have followed his music since -78. It's truly incredable. Dude, it's Mark Knopfler. His music is everywhere. He really studied the blues and country music. In fact, if you wanna know which guitarist most influenced him, it would have to be Chet Atkins, who taught him to make his guitar talk. Don't worry about broadcasting it, but you have to listen to their first three albums. The rest are amazing, but it will give you an idea of just how insanely mature Mark's compositions were from the very beginning. "Wild West End" from the first album is an absolute masterpiece. All of Communique will melt your brain. Then Making Movies, which features "Tunnel" and "Romeo and Juliette", which are iconic. Then move on to Brothers and Every Street and so on. You guys will be amazed. Just drop a tab, find a beach and make a day of it. You will come out younger and filled with hope!

Telegraph road contains all the DS masterpieces .. the final solo of Sultan of swing, the piano of Tunnel of love, the melody of Romeo and Juliet and the genius of Mark in Unce open a time in the West.

They certainly have a style all of their own. Such a fantastic band. The first piece I ever heard from Dire Straights was in the 80s Sultans of Swing. Mark is such a great guitarist even now at 72.

It's absolutely crazy to think that when they produced the brothers in arms album one of the recording producers said Terry Williams drumming wasn't upto scratch and they had to redo the drumming with someone else,,,, WHAT 😮 how is that possible, Williams was an absolute machine 😯, you will never see a better drumming performance than that

I'm late finding this reaction. I'm not joking, I was there! (I'm a blob in the crowd on the inside of the album cover) I was 18 years old and I went down there on the train with some fellow apprentices from work. When they played this live, we couldn't believe it, it was better than the studio version. It was an amazing concert, Telegraph road was the highlight. Amazing! Thanks for reacting to this and bringing back memories of when I had hair!

Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's guitarplaying are my adddiction since I was a young teenager during the early 80's. I had this concert on cassette and listened it where I could on my walkman. I must have heard Mark's solo's more then a 1000 times easily. Play rewind play rewind, play rewind over and over again I just could never stop haha. Saw Dire Straits only once live on their last tour and it was frikkin awesome. A couple years later I saw Mark on his first solo tour of The Golden Heart album. I was standing only a few meters away from him. To see this guy playing his guitar alone is just mind blowing! 👍👍❤
