I feel this is the best ever piece of piano playing in a rock band. He just ties every other instrument together like a family and it's also such an important instrument in this song, if it wasn't used in this song this song would never be this epic. I've always considered Mark's guitar playing as the best in the world but Alan on the piano is brilliant. He used to play with Eric Clapton and is the only player in Clapton's band to ever leave on his own accord and he moved to Dire Straits and that says it all. The Piano and Alan is as much of the star in this song as Mark and his guitar. I also love the bass and the rhythm guitars as well but really love just how delicate Terry is on the drums when he's just tinkling the cymbals gently and Alan is gently doing the same on the high notes on the piano, so much power and so much delicate playing is just bloody awesome. And at 56 years old I've loved this song for 40 years and my love for it gets better and stronger by the year. Sometimes when I'm listening thru headphones I just tear up with happiness due to such beautiful music. The main reason they're so bloody brilliant is because they're all happy smiling and jamming to something they love doing

Jesus, that was INTENSE, gets me every time. Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are probably two of the VERY BEST guitarists of modern times, if not THE best. But their styles are quite different I think. Mark's fingers dance ACROSS the strings, whereas David's dance ALONG the strings. Both BRILLIANT, and capable of stirring your innermost soul. Both Dire Steaits AND Pink Floyd are just beyond compare, both bands have BRILLIANT Drummers, Keyboard players, Bass players, AND guitarists.

I'm so grateful that I grew up with this music! This performance is the perfect showcase for this masterpiece, and for their astounding collective musicianship! Not only was Mark a guitar virtuoso, but he was also a skilled poet/story-teller, song-writer and composer for the band. Nevertheless, he always made sure to give all of the band members a chance to shine. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, his unique sound, that he is a finger-plucking genius, and his ability to produce complex emotions and nuanced transitions with and through his guitar... Mark was actually left handed but was playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! Another very different but spectacular example of Mark's talent is also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West, also from 'Alchemy Live'.

This song was inspired whilst Mark Knopfler was on a dIRE sTRAITS tour bus along Telegraph Road in the USA whilst also reading the book “Growth of the Soil” by Norwegian author Knut Hamsun when he wrote this song. Dude, it's Mark Knopfler. His music is everywhere. He really studied the blues and country music. In fact, if you wanna know which guitarist most influenced him, it would have to be Chet Atkins, who taught him to make his guitar talk. Don't worry about broadcasting it, but you have to listen to their first three albums. The rest are amazing, but it will give you an idea of just how insanely mature Mark's compositions were from the very beginning. "Wild West End" from the first album is an absolute masterpiece. All of Communique will melt your brain. Then Making Movies, which features "Tunnel" and "Romeo and Juliette", which are iconic. Then move on to Brothers and Every Street and so on. You guys will be amazed. Just drop a tab, find a beach and make a day of it. You will come out younger and filled with hope!

‘Once upon a time in the west’ is a song that is not reacted to a lot, but deserves more praise and popularity. Amazing guitar play, and is also played at alchemy live. Best relaxing rock song to chill out to

The fact he played it on his 2019 Tour for the first time since 1983 was mega emotional for me as I assumed I’d never see it live.

The bass line on the Alchemy version is something else. Ilsley nails it.

Thank you for a great reaction I love watching you both. I am a child of the 50's so I have had the privilege of seeing this incredible band several times at their very best. My boyfriend at the time and myself we came away from this concert on such a high we didn't come down for days. Fantastic wonderful does not begin to describe it, so talented all of them. I was a little in love with Mark and certainly John Illsley on bass....🥰🥰💗🎸🎸

I always say the same "Why does that guitar sound like that?", you can hear only two notes and you can say "that's Mark Knofler's guitar". Good reaction as always. :D

That concert was amazing. Still have a lot of amazing songs from it to go... 'once upon a time in the west' (the concert opener) 'Private investigations' and tunnel of love to name but a few.
