OLD as a concept is terrifying, especially when it comes to memory horror as I call it. Dementia is hell, but imagine all the stages of dementia only a few hours, that rapid deterioration to the point when, on the beach, you wouldn't be able to comprehend or express it and then you're gone. And only then, maybe less than half an hour after that, will you die. Dementia is death before total organ failure and I could not and will never wish that on someone else. Just... The thought that everything advances so quickly terrifies me, and it's worse when you're on that beach. Everything never gets the chance to live because you're gone before you can realize.

@@notthis9586 representation is a widespread thing that effects so many people.. many peoples only exposure to things like mental health is through pop culture, where they are depicted as depraved, murderous and disgusting individuals for the consumption of an ignorant viewer base. Fiction can change how we perceive reality, and if your only interaction with an illness or disorder is that it leads to a horror movie, then that’s likely to breed ignorance and intolerance irl, such that meeting someone who actually has the condition could be incredibly biased, insensitive and discriminatory. Yes people are that dumb and mailable. For example, Sociopaths and and Psychopaths have had their real, medical terms thrown around as insults and are typically seen as disgusting or even murderous people, when most of them are simply struggling with a real disorder that makes it harder to socialise or empathise. But they get villainised anyway in movies and irl because it’s a cheep and fast method to say “they stab people because mental illness” and leave it there, with no nuisance and handled terribly.. see the issue? That’s why you should reconsider it being just ‘a little problematic’ It’s exasperating the stigmatisation of mental health, which desperately needs to stop.

Nessie is specifically an outdated Plesiosaur; Plesiosaurs hunt bottom up from the sea floor, and are not built for prowling the surface with their heads up high. 5. Watching this just makes you think “M Night Shalayman is Neil Breen with a budget”. Like literally the ending is just one step from Neil Breen talking to the evil bankers and saying “Isn’t that immoral?!”

I feel this entire video can be summarized by that one clip of Mr. Krabs going "No! I ain't old!". Also not gonna lie the concept of the movie reminds me of a Junji Ito plot and I was super into it.

Ito would definitely have the hair and nails grow though and go through all the body horror he could cram into those pages

The title of this movie is ridiculous. They could've easily called it Shifting Sands or Hourglass's End or even Life's A Beach, but they just called it Old.

My partner and I watched The Beach That Makes You Old (tm) with no context or spoilers in theaters and it was absolutely hilarious. I did genuinely get freaked out by the lady in the cave (if you know you know) and we spent the next 3 hours just yelling about better uses for a beach that ages anything not wrapped in tin foil

Didn't the original comic deal with racism against a Middle Eastern character? I'm a bit bothered that they kept the racism subplot (which I wouldn't mind removing because it didn't seem to go anywhere) but changed the race of the character on the receiving end.

Honestly it would because all the rich and powerful would horde it to live forever in their riches. The entire world would turn into an extra hellhole over the fact that you got a beach that basically grants immortality and therefore no weaknesses. You can basically do everything forever while everyone else is wasting away while Elon Musk Jeff Bezos and other rich corrupt people just go on living forever as immortal money deities.

Gus and Meg's bewilderment is pretty close to my own. Towards the end of the movie, I was remiss as to what M. Night was exactly trying to say. Even assuming he didn't have any actual statements to make about the pharmaceutical industry, perhaps he just couldn't let it be and have there be no explanation behind the beach, since that whole over-explain mentality is pretty consistent in his works, of maybe he's just set in his ways and has internalized him being the "twist at the end guy." Or maybe he was just hesitant to take the ending to its logical, grim conclusion. Who's to say, really. For this movie to work, M Night had to have had to stifle his ego and pass scriptwriting to someone else, someone who could have preserved the existential dread of Sandcastles while he as a director could have kept in the thriller and body horror aspects. The big problem is that Sandcastles was about a group of people, some worse than others but all with their own baggage and forced into unthinkable circumstances where they have to reconcile their problems or go mad with denial over humanity's mutual inevitability. M Night has proven time and again he no longer has the capacity to write that human and personable, and ended up writing this movie like a slasher, complete with disposable or deliberately unlikable characters and a Final Girl in the form of the kids. The big difference is that slashers generally just hold death as the major consequence, but doesn't really elaborate on death itself. So long as you make it out alive in the end, that counts as a win. But Old still veered close enough into the ennui of the denial, anger and acceptance of death that these two kids who were in grade school yesterday and now have had over half their lives stolen from them...like, was that meant to be more uplifting than just killing them off?
