Everyone's looking for a proper meaning in this song but it hits particularly close in my case. I have a great group of friends, I love them so much. They're all guys and we all get along great. However when we hang out together, it's almost impossible for me to get a word in. Either I'm interupted or just ignored, they don't mean it intentionally but they catch themselves doing it after. Whereas when I hang out with another group of friends who are mainly girls, they will always listen or at least one of them will! It doesn't feel like 'hell' but it sure is lonely when you're surrounded by people who won't hear you

This is awesome! As a woman myself I can say that being ignored it the worst feeling and just a little bit more will men do it to women then women to women. Its just a bit of old habit bathed in I guess, but it is pretty horrible. I can only imagine when women used to be supposed to be “seen but not heard” when they wanted to have a job and hoped that one day they would but no one listened to their pleas. This song really captures how horrible that must have been.

I could be wrong but is this song about stay at home moms that were forced to be stay at home moms? Or just oppressed women in general like the lyric “she’ll never ever edge a word” means being silenced. Like that picture of women in the (1700s- 1920s). At a time when women had no choice but to be a stay at home mom. Thus being described as “lady hell” and also the lyric “...to encounter cliches of endless chores and thankless children to raise”

@thomasoconnor
@thomasoconnor 4 жыл бұрын
I interpret it differently, first the quote starts with "You may expect..." leading into "...to encounter cliches of endless chores and thankless children to raise" rather than stating it is that, second the quote is followed by "but trapping women in a kitchen is too kitsch to be a prison" meaning that would be too tacky so they instead did something else, third is the "she'll never ever edge a word in herself" is more basic, one of the few things that truly upset me is to keep being ignored, fourth that hurt doesn't end because "somehow she's still holding onto all of her dreams". This is just a case of hell is whatever keeps working, irony may happen but isn't necessary, pain works on some but not for others, and society is core to humans.
@UnsuspectingCommenterPassingBy
@UnsuspectingCommenterPassingBy 4 жыл бұрын
Though it explicitly talks about a “hell” I don’t exactly interpret the lyrics as them being situated in a specific place or period of time, I think it just talks about the universal struggles of being a woman (the so called “spell” which men can sympathize with but never truly understand, therefore they don’t exist in that “space”) in a society (the cell) that often expects them to be something they don’t necessarily want to be. They still have ambitions of their own and dream of that someone who will actually listen to them, but since many of them feel trapped, they just force themselves to love a Hades. But it’s not just these Hades who won’t listen, that includes other women who, despite going through the same and being so busy minding each other’s bussiness, still can’t bring themselves to empathize with the very same women they talk about all the time.

Welcome to lady hell There's no men among the creatures 'Cause we prefer to customize every feature To make sure that hades is the bane of every lady in the the world Whether she's a woman or a girl You may expect to encounter clichés Of endless chores, thankless children to raise But trapping women in a kitchen is too kitsch to be a prison But here's the real smite of the feminine afterlife Though there's a crowd in her cell Everyone's preoccupied with everyone else She can never ever edge a word in herself 'Cause no one will listen to her in lady hell For as sad as it seems Somehow she's still holding on to all of her dreams Even though we know she'll never break from this spell She can't let go in lady hell Look around there are no tricks to pass the time Forever occupied with greener grass upon her mind And finds no satisfaction in the finest of distractions Though she dolls herself up she will never quench her passion We theorized that the greatest form of torture Is to keep her here and to endlessly ignore her Took it to market and we did obtain Loneliness is our darkest brand of pain, oh Though there's a crowd in her cell Everyone's preoccupied with everyone else She can never ever edge a word in herself 'Cause no one will listen to her in lady hell For as sad as it seems Somehow she's still holding on to all of her dreams Even though we know she'll never break from this spell She can't let go in lady hell Come on, there's always room We've saved a place for you Come on, there's always room We've saved a place for you Though there's a crowd in your cell Everyone's preoccupied with everyone else You can never ever edge a word in yourself 'Cause no one will listen to you in lady hell For as sad as it seems Somehow you're still holding on to all of her dreams Even though we know you'll never break from this spell You can't let go in lady hell You'll never break from this spell You can't let go in lady hell

Part of it at least is a lady's own impression that she isn't being heard. Im a trans man but this kinda hits me in a certain way. Like, with feminism you're supposed to be advocating for gender equality but so many people always seem to exclude so many others. Its like being in a room with people who you wanna seek help from but everyone else is too focused on themselves; and this doesn't have to be with just feminism! Other minorities have so many of these issues. I hear so much from people in the LGBTQ+ community of "gays are safe now! We should talk about (insert sexuality here)" or "trans people are talked about enough- what about (insert gender identity here)" its not that others shouldn't be talked about, they should! But it feels more like an oppression contest rather than truly wanting to spread awareness. It makes your own community feel more like hell. I dunno, maybe Im just talking out of my ass but thats what this song makes me feel 😅

Feminism is advocating for women's rights. The advocation of equality in general is egalitarianism. Please don't get them mixed up. Saying that feminism is for men's rights as well is so hypocritical and ironic it's not even funny. Feminism, something created specifically for women, can't even be about women anymore. Men just *have* to have a share or it's not allowed to exist.

It’s in the context of a longer fantastical musical. Our main character has made a descent into the underworld and mistakenly believes that he is stumbled in to Hell for Women. The Toll taker at the River Hades finds this so amusing so he fleshes out this idea in a tongue and cheek ditty.

@@dirtpoorrobins Oh ok, sorry I haven't seen the whole story and I though it aligned pretty well with how women felt during the depression.(warning spoilers) I was reading the story and I forgot the name but it was about this big tough dude I think his name was Lennie Small and there was a tiny dude I forgot his name and they were trying to find work during the great depression, there was this wife who hated her husband, how her life is, better decisions she could have made, etc. Well she got accidentally murdered by breaking her neck when Lennie accidentally got her hair stuck in his hand. Also sorry for the long message, but I listen to a lot of your songs out of order and might not know what the true meaning of songs are, but I'll do that and try to get the ultimate Dirt Poor Robins experience, you guys are a great band keep up the good work. I know we’re supposed to look into the deeper meaning, but did this make anyone else think of orange is the new black?

So many of y'all are saying the song is about some kind of sexism thing when the entirety of the song indicates that it's about how we desperately crave attention

It could be both. Every human on Earth needs attention, nomatter how stoic people may seem. We are somewhat social creatures by default. A problem that has luckily been growing in recognition is that wemon aren't exactly taken seriously by men and sometimes even other wemon. As a girl who is currently trying to build up a starting career while young, I can confirm that there's alot of times where people will listen to males over you weather that be intentionally or not. We're often seen as "too emotional" or "not all there in the head" despite doing basically the same thing as our male counterparts. This gets very lonely very quickly. It's only inevitable that we can come off desperate for attention when in reality we just want the same attention that others are getting

It could be a mixture of a lot of things, that's the beauty of different perspectives
