Awesome vids Kyle ......bought a 300 exc a few months back after not riding for a number of years (Business, Family Kids etc) loving it again ! Being a used bike it has been tampered with over the years by tools that don't really know what they are doing, I rode it about 5 times before setting the sag to the correct height...can't tell you how much of an improvement it has made....it was only 12mm too low, I raised it & dropped the bike down at the front 5mm & it is like a different bike now, turns so nice on single trail tight stuff. Thanks again for the info you provide in your vids, cheers from Australia

I may be wrong on this...but I think you set your particular race sag first....and then check static sag to see if you have a correct spring for your weight/riding gear.

Now I really want to check out the sag on my bike! Body positioning could cope with some of the issues of not having enough sag when your in the sand or tight terrain. When you crack on the trottle in the perfect gear that creates more sag and can be adjusted with body positioning I believe. I was riding double with my fiance with the 2 of us weighing 265 on my 2014 yz250, I only adjusted the screw settings both front and rear 5 clicks to the +. Now riding solo with the same settings it works out perfectly. Im going to see if the settings I have are even close to what Yamaha says haha. I love all the videos, it really makes me want to make sure my bike is perfect before every ride so that I can be a better rider and worry about improving my skills instead of wishing I changed the oile and cleaned the air filter. It all makes a difference when you expect your bike to perform a certain way and it doesnt because you didnt do proper maintence.

Weight transfer is only part of the handling difference. When you change sag, you change the steering geometry. When you decrease your sag, you decrease steering angle and steering becomes more nimble, but twitchy. Increasing sag will increase the angle and give it a cruiser like feel, slow but stable.

AWDn0t2 you're referring to squat I believe. Unless you are making drastic changes it shouldn't have any effective result as far as changing the steering geometry in any significant way. On paper yes but actually riding the bike because you're in and out of the seat under acceleration deceleration and braking, those changes wouldn't have any significant effect.

Nic video however I'd read that you should check your static sag only after you have set your rider (race) sag as you are basically trying to ensure that once you have set the sag for your weight that the static sag is still within the range it should be. If static sag is out with the specified range then you should be looking to change your spring for one that allows you to set your rider sag correctly whilst maintaining the correct static sag.
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 9 жыл бұрын
Tony Anderson You are correct. In this application, the sag was very close with my weight, so the static sag was still in spec.

I just bought a '17 KTM 150 XC-W. The bike is just a little too tall as delivered. I'm 6' tall and have a 32" inseem. My question is, can I just set the sag so it sits lower, or should I also use a lighter spring? I weigh about 195, I don't race, I just want a good fast trail bike. Relaxed turning and high speed stability would be fine with me.

Byron Woodruff you can but that's not the right way. You can buy a lowering kit for the linkage.
@GJCOrado
@GJCOrado 6 жыл бұрын
You are probably going to need a stiffer spring also with your weight plus gear. Make sure you lower the front equal to the rear to keep proper handling characteristics of the bike. Also change the front springs to match your weight or the bike will dive too much.

nice explaination, thanks! any advice on how to set up correctly the handlebar? on my 500 EXC the stock setup is installed on the holes that are backward, and once i stand on my peg i feel they are a bit too low. Should I use risers?, change the handlebar? or just change to the front holes and rotate them a bit foward?... and other thing, in the manual, the specs of the rear spring is for a rider of 165-185lbs, I'm weight about 218lbs without my gear. Can I just change the spring to a stiffer one to match my weight without doing other setup on the suspension? thanks!

Hi there, excellent video as always. Can you help me clarify on something: On the KTM 125 SX Manual, the section on Sag adjustment are broken into the same two topics (Static vs. Riding Sags). From my understanding, adjusting the coil is only meant for "Static" sag; whereas the manual said for Riding Sag adjustment, it has to come from installing of a different spring (of a different tension rate). My question is: wouldn't your instruction on the riding sag adjustment end up changing the static sag in advertently? This is where I get confused.
@motoben6520

My secret is just good old fashioned elbow grease. After every ride I come back and spray it off with either just the hose, or a pressure washer (if it's really muddy). I then use a hand brush (like $10 bucks on amazon) and a bucket of soapy water to scrub it all down. I'll then rinse it off. The real key though it using a Chamois to hand dry which make a HUGE difference in how it ultimately looks. I'll usually finish with blowing out all the hard to reach areas with compressed air with my air hose. That's it. Thanks for watching!

When you do the math do you subtract your overall sag when the rider is on the bike from the static sag or from the number you got when the shock didn't have any weight on it? It makes sense to be from when there is no weight on it so you get the 100-105mm overall sag. Thanks!

Hmm...someone COULD developed and sell some type of optical laser device where you clip on reference targets and then aim the device at the bike so it can "see" the reference targets ....then just a matter of going through the exercise letting a computer via the laser sensors record what takes place... Good idea?? With lots of data a program could just tell you what adjustment to make after simply "watching" you go through a set routine of compression movements....not a lot of thinking or anything! Just set up the device and go through the motions! And then? Obey the instructions making changes....and then recheck until it indicates "good'

Is their a difference if you measure from the swing arm to under the rear fender instead of the side
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 9 жыл бұрын
Ktmracer Technically, you can measure to any two points on the back of the bike as long as you've got one point representing the wheel and another point representing the frame. All you are really doing is measuring the how much the suspension moves under your weight and the bikes weight. What you want to do is just find a place that is easy to measure repeatably. Most guys find it's easiest to do it the way I've shown, but if you have a system that works well for you (using different measurement points) it should be fine.

+grosblyth Stiff suspension is more about your valving and clicker settings than spring rate. If you want your bike to be stiffer and more responsive with less dive on the road, look into having someone reshim your fork and shock. Going up in spring rate is primarily going to change your ride height/sag, which may or may not be what you want.

can some one help me with this i just bought a used bike and the low speed clicker and the high speed nut dont spin independently. For example if you try and turn the low speed the high speed turns with it at the same time. The bike a a 07 yz125 i was wondering if there would be anyway to fix this or do i have to buy a whole new rear shock for 900+

yamaha yz you could try to hold one with the screw driver and the other with a spanner. If that doesn't work try bringing it into the shop and have them check it out, you don't always need to replace the part, it can usually be rebuilt.

yamaha yz spray some wd40 or other lube onto the threads to ensure the nut is not stuck to the screw.

All these settings people speak of is fine but your going to hear it here and here it now. And that is. you need to set the sag where they say to start with but then you ride your bike and check the cornering. If your bike wants to push to the outside in the corner. Go back to the truck and crank the spring three full turns tighter to put more weight on the front wheel. Go back out do the same corner. You will see it is easier. Turn the spring until you can rail the inside corner but start with it pushing out so you know how far you came. It will happen. Those of you that heed my advice will soon question if you want to share this information with your friends. I promise. this will make your bike corner like never before. The sag setting is not the bible as everyone speaks. your bike handling is a safety item not a perk. Just like the government. they only give you bits of information. haha

Which is of course what this awesome video states pretty good nformation but in cave man terms. if it pushes. tighten the spring until it stops pushing. Good videos guys. Watch them all. I went out and did these adjustments and was so amazed how much difference it made I walked around the track joking. oh your clutch does not work. tighten your sag. what. your brakes are out. tighten the spring. best adjustment ever!

i thought you set the sag according to your body weight? IE: a pre-determined measurement, which is adjusted according to the riders weight? Setting the suspension up to manual specs, is just setting it back to standard setup.. Setting the suspension according to manual isnt actually setting anything up, as a light person would barely make the suspension move when on it, So will be too hard for them.. and the same goes for a heavy person.. a heavy person could bottom out the suspension and cause the rear tyre to hit the arch.. So thats why i thought the suspension was setup dependant on the riders weight, and not manual stock specs..

The rider is IS set to the riders weight. Watch this again :) You only check the static sag to see if you have the right spring after your rider sag is set up.

@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Didn't remove the plugs on this axle, but you can still get a good measurement the way I'm doing it. You can do this with a tape measure too, so the tool isn't important. The concept here is the main thing. You just measure from the same spot each time. It works.

sorry but the video is not good. He states the static sag tells you if you have the right spring rate. But first there is not just one spring for each bike and second with how much preload since static sag depends on preload he didnt say a damn thing about the static preload on that bike
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 9 жыл бұрын
+q062am I guess you don't understand...
@hiredexpectations9037
@hiredexpectations9037 9 жыл бұрын
I have to agree. Static sag is soly based on your sag setting. You cannot check your static sag without first setting your preload. Because static sag will tell us AFTER setting our preload or sag, if we have the correct spring rate. Example. In factory setting you may have a static sag of 30mm, ok that's exceptable. But if you weigh 155 lbs your probably going to have to add preload to get the bike to fall into that 100-105mm sag measurement. So now what was 30mm of static sag has most likely become 20mm of static sag which means your rear spring is over sprung.
@hiredexpectations9037
@hiredexpectations9037 9 жыл бұрын
And let me correct myself. You would have to take away preload if your lighter. Not add. Adding will make it stiffer. Removing will soften. However in an over sprung scenario this will make your static sag number smaller.
