If you kill a 2 stroke it’s like a video game you’re a high level at, some disposable cash later and you’re back on the track. You blow a valve or seize the motor on a 4 stroke though... might as well look for a used bike with the same engine and get the extra parts to boot.

KTM sold 280,000 motorcycles in 2019, Yamaha sold over 5,000,000. Assuming Honda say, builds a 2 stroke, and manages to steal some of KTM/Husky/Beta sales. It's also stealing sales from it's own 4 stroke line of bikes. You have to go in front of the product dev boys and explain how gaining 20-30 thousand sales of 2 strokes a year at a profit margin of 1,000 bucks per bike, you need to sell for 5 years to make back the tooling cost (100, 000, 000$) of production. In 5 years the EPA or eurozone could well declare 2 strokes banned for environmental reasons. Keep in mind such enviro reasons are BS, one transoceanic container ship emits more pollution in a year than the worlds entire 2 stroke fleet, you don't see government calls for ending international trade or going back to Clipper ships. I digress. The point is Yamaha sells YZ250's at a good profit as a legacy product. No R&D costs, tooling paid off etc. Sales are to Yamaha fan boys and to those who want a smoker but don't want KTM's ridiculous prices. In conclusion such a project entails risk, big capital outlay etc for a -potential- paltry few million in profits. These companies look at billion dollar bottom lines. They could probably make a few million selling a line of BOLD NEW GRAPHICS stickers. Cheers

@@codenamenoob4973 Although I kind of still prefer a kickstart for the feel, you're right. I've stalled my bike during a race many times before, and it usually happens as I'm slamming on the brakes right before I enter a corner. An electric start would make things a million times easier. Stopping and kicking your bike in the middle of the race - even if it starts up immediately - is hugely problematic, mainly because you have to stand up and adjust your position so much, and by the time you get it started you've already screwed up your entry into the next obstacle.

Its due time for the Supercross rules to allow 2-strokes to be 2/3 the cc's of the 4-strokes... this means a 300cc 2-stroke racing against 450cc strokers, and ~150cc 2-strokes vs 250cc strokers... the 2:1 cc advantage is unfair. When I was younger back in the 70's/80's, there was NO cc advantage given to 4-strokes... if your bike was a 500cc, you raced against other 500cc bikes no matter how many times it fired per revolution... 4-stroke technology has advanced far enough that this 2:1 rule is not fair, as you can tell by the lack of 2-strokes on the grid... lets mix it up!
@dunfielder4 жыл бұрын
They should just get rid of the stupid rules they came up with years ago that killed the 2 stroke. With a skilled rider I'd bet a 450 2stroke eats a 450 4stroke
@kickstartkrew99244 жыл бұрын
@@dunfielder no matter what you do to a two-stroke a 450 4-stroke will always crush it on the track. There's no way to get 60+ horsepower out of a smoker and yet have it be measured and as controllable for a full race. Now as for equal displacement in the smaller 250 engines you might have something there. But as for the fastest way to get around a track, until electric bikes receive further development, a 450 four-stroke is still the king.
@jeredalmeida18804 жыл бұрын
@@kickstartkrew9924 It's "The King" because they don't make 2 strokes in 450. If the 2T hadn't been pushed out of Supercross, they'd be putting more resources into 2stroke R&D and properly tuning their suspensions and gearing like they've been doing with 4strokes as of late.

But who wants to spend a thousand bucks three or more times a year, and 10 hrs in labor. The two strokes are good for hundred rides if maintenance is done and quality oil is used. And a top end is about 150 and 45 minutes Laber. They can have all the thumpers. And by the way Yamaha should not be in the shoot out. They were the one that started the 4 stroke debacle.

There is very little meaningful differences between bikes of two decades ago and today. The fact is if you could uncrate a new 1997 YZ 250 it would run comparable lap times with any of these bike’s . As a matter of a fact with some mods it would be a better bike the the current YX 250 because the steel frame was superior to the current aluminum frame. I was a dealer during the marketing ploy of 4 strokes and aluminum frames and it was nothing but that, marketing. Props the team blue for beating the red team to the punch.

Is it just me or did the Yamaha look visibly more under control than the others. Watch the video and see if you ever see the YZ do anything funny. See if you can find any of the others whose front end doesn’t dance around multiple times. Smoother more tractable power and predictable handling. I think this bike gets penalized more for perception than reality of what most folks could go faster on. I’ve owned 5 KTMs and 5 Yamahas over the years. I switched back to blue from orange this year for these two reasons. Don’t hate them just because they perfected the no frills 2-stroke 15 years ago.

That husky with the 1980s livery on it like back in the day they were never contenders I like to see him on top now they make a God damn good chainsaw

I’d still get the YZ. Being that it’s Japanese, I’d bet the manufacturing is second to none. The Italians make beautiful things...that break often. As for KTM and Husky, unfortunately they’re manufacturing more and more in china. That alone worries me.

@@paolopaletti2738 I absolutely agree. My old Italian husky 4-stroke has been absolutely flawless. A friend of mine has a Italian Husqvarna WR125 that is clearly better than my KTM.

@Dashriprock43 жыл бұрын
@@paolopaletti2738 It reminds me of a recent comparison test done in this magazine. The beta 500 dual sport finished first or second in every single category and then they went and declared the KTM the winner.

For the 2021 2 stroke shootout you need to add the gasgas 250 tp the fleet along with other manufactors like sherco and beta to widen the field

2 strokes still have a major market share in the off road enduro hare scramble trail ride scene... strange most dealerships in this area are Yamaha/KTM... you would think some of the other Japanese companies would want some pie!!!

Would have been good to see Gas Gas, Beta and Sherco included. I have ridden all these brands in the video and must say the YZ is king. For the last few years however I have been riding a Gas Gas EC250 and the Gas Gas EC300......they are brilliant, highly specced and super reliable. Would not even consider selling them....ever!

Ya'll gave like zero detailed info on why the bikes got ranked the way they did. The TM for example: its pricier, heavier (because of e start and an electronic power valve) and "quirckier"?? What does that mean? Hows the powerband to the rest, how's it corner, how's it jump, how's the suspension?
