Not a perfect hunting day, but a perfect day for hunting, definitely a place just to sit and clear your head and enjoy. It was a beautiful day here yesty but I wasted half of it mowing and whipper snipping, and sorting my scrap metal collection, "boring". but I got out in the arvo, much more entertaining, a new permission on an old pub site, much better, trouble is ive got to do some whipper snipping there too! but it was a very good start, an 1887 eng penny and my very first 1879 queen vic shilling + multiple alum cans and bottle caps, the good with the bad! Thanks for a great start to the day Mish, see you next Saturday, Hooray!

@@DirtFishMish I started filming my hunts back in oct last year, but managed to lose the beginning hunts from my very first permission very disappointing , now I couldn't tell you how many hours of film there is, I bought a gopro quite a few years ago, planning to use it in the gold fields, but I never got back there, so now its coins and relics, and to tell you the truth, its much more fun. Ive been contemplating doing a KZbin thing for a while, but its daunting and a little bit scary, trying to figure out how to incorporate the earlier films into the current hunts a bit at a time, rather than go through them all one at a time from the beginning, probably never happen, I dont know how you stored yours but I filed each day in its own folder, and put them into a folder for that month, at the very least, when I get to old to detect, ill have adventures to look back on, Anyway, Sorry for the extent of this comment, as usual it got out of hand, but I would love to see that historical hunt of yours, hope you can find it, All the best! Cheers Marc, yes I've already had a chat to Sito about that as I'm hoping to think up some sort of mounting point for this scoop! I'll probably have to drill through the handle and add a D-shackle or similar, that I can then attach a bolt snap to. That would also mean I could hip mount it while beach detecting, though perhaps I could use a miner's pick holder for that too. Hmmmm! 🤔

I believe in the beginning of the video you had mentioned that you didn't know which coil to use that day. I think MINELAB carries/makes a BACKPACK that can accommodate your coil needs, another word's you can take your other coils with you and anything else you need in your BACKPACK including drinking water, that's what I do. I have a 14"×11" coil- 11"×8.5" coil- and a Garrett 4.5" coil. The big coil gets mounted on the Daisy Chain's (loops) which are on the outside of the backpack because the coil is so big 14"×11". But there's other stuff and it works out pretty good, just a thought for you.
@DirtFishMish2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Craig, I actually had a backpack with me on this day (it has special mounts on the straps for cameras) but I carry a lot of filming gear and in this case, also a thick jacket due to the cold. It is rare that I will hike out with multiple coils but if a spot is promising, I’ll go back with the preferred coil on the next trip. Cheers!

Hi Joe! I don't really chat about where I am unless I'm far from home, but there's a lot of the Victorian coastline that features similar terrain (and even further north - a friend in Newcastle hunts on very similar beaches as well). Rock pools are great, they're nature's own filter, but be mindful of the crabs and octopuses (etc) that may lurk within. Hi Mish thanks for another video I watch them all. Was wondering how do the detectors and pin pointer hold up with the salt? Is there any evidence of corrosion, and do you rinse everything afterwards? Thanks Matt
@DirtFishMish2 жыл бұрын
Hiya Matt, thanks for the comment and it's a great question too! This pinpointer holds up very well as it is a diving compatible unit and thus has a solid plastic body with good o-ring seals at the parts that separate. With the detectors, it is good practice to clean out any sand from the skidplate and also give everything a thorough fresh water rinse afterwards - I use a garden tap with a trigger hose fitting attached when I get home, or make use of outdoor shower stations if provided. Always good to pay extra attention to any metal components too ie. charging points and headphone jacks to clean off any corrosion or gunk as it appears. Cheers!!

I wonder if you have run across any tungsten sinkers? They will be very heavy for their size - about as heavy (dense actually) as gold. They would also be a lot more expensive than lead sinkers - about US$5 for a 1 ounce(US) or 29 g sinker. They will also be a LOT harder (294 HB vs 5 HB). I wonder what numbers they would produce on your metal detector. Here's a handy little chart. (The columns may get a bit wonky depending on the font your browser uses.) Metal Density Hardness Conductivity notes (g/cm³) (Brinell) (Cu=100) (when I say lighter I mean less dense) Alumin[i]um (pure)2.6. 23 59 Copper (pure) 8.9. 30 100 Silver (pure) 10.5 30 106 (alloys like .925 are harder but not much lighter) Lead (pure). 11.3. 5 8 (alloys are harder and usually a bit lighter) Tungsten (pure). 19.0 294 31 (alloys are lighter; harder than all but the hardest steels) Gold (24Kt). 19.3 25 71 (lower Kt are both lighter and harder) A chunk of tungsten the size of a 12 oz (340ml) soda or beer can weighs 19 lb (~8.6 kilos) vs about 1 pound (~450g) for the can of soda (full). It's really fun to let someone try to pick it up; their eyes say "one pound" so the arm muscles try to lift one pound. It seems to be glued to the table. I thought this was enough fun that I actually bought a chunk of tungsten that size. Expensive tom-foolery.
@DirtFishMish2 жыл бұрын
I love the idea of your prank with the can-sized lump of tungsten! 😂 Thanks for the info! I don't believe I've ever come across one, and in fact I've never heard of them being used in Australia but that's not to say that they aren't around. I believe it was one of my californian viewers that mentioned lead sinkers were banned there and therefore they had alternatives such as tungsten. Our reefs are quite rocky and jagged, so I'd imagine it'd be rather expensive for a fisherman to lose tungsten sinkers frequently in such locations. Cheers Peter :)

@@StuartSnyder-ti9pk no worries. Yep the Equinox is what I started the channel with so there’s quite a back-catalogue, but it’s been nearly a year or so since I switched it up. The earlier gen Equinoxes (600/800) didn’t always live up to their waterproof rating and as someone who dunks theirs often, I needed further peace of mind. It’s still an excellent machine out of the water. 😁

You know he NOX will excel in finding something trying hard not to be found (like minuscule targets)!
@DirtFishMish2 жыл бұрын
I find teeny tiny targets with both machines, but yes, the nox is particularly good at finding miniscule pieces of copper nails! :)

Same here, I still have a ‘day job’ most days of the week but these detecting sessions are fantastic for the mental and physical health. Cheers 😊

a couple of tagets in and it'll sound like an old glove, or something

Oh wow, that's something I didn't know. How interesting! Unreal to think that we use it in such vast quantities for fishing purposes. I'm on the southern edge of the mainland so I can certainly understand the similarities with the geology. Cheers :)

I would want my dogs lost & found tag.

I've returned a few of them over the years now (sometimes I even get a photo of the dog for my videos! 😂), generally speaking if they're in good working order and look like they've been lost in the past 12mths I'll return. Cheers :)

@@DirtFishMish I understand. But even if my dog had died I would like it as a keepsake. Love the vid’s!

Someone should come up with a "button" so we can fast forward through the uneventful parts. Oh, wait! Silly me! There IS one! Mish could talk all day long and not do a thing, as far as I'm concerned. I thoroughly enjoy her light-hearted, Aussie accented banter.
