The thing with the rod is a piston from a camp lamp or stove pump. here they are made by Coleman.

It’s interesting how old relics that are just from cars or lamps or contraptions, still have this ‘thing ness’ that the eye is attracted to, and the hand wants to hold. Well made and beautiful, so different from many modern things.

Great beach hunt Mish! Sinker Squad will be happy you made that big haul. The Autolite tag could indeed be a regulator tag or a starter or generator tag. Mainly used on Ford vehicles. Also, I also think the brassy rod is a pump for a gas stove or lantern. Pressurizes the tank. Till next time- Cheers!
@DirtFishMish Жыл бұрын
Cheers Mike, I figured the sinker squad would approve! These relic beach hunts are always so much more interesting to me, everything tells a story. Most folks agree with you on the rod so that's what I'm going with! :)

What a FUN hunt! You found so many interesting things. I almost love that kind of hunt more than finding the usual beach suspects, coins, rings, bottle caps. I love that Australian coins are so big. When you find one, you really feel like you found something. I saw some Auto Lite distributors that had that type of plate, but not brass. I'll keep an eye out.
@DirtFishMish Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Marti! That’s why I like spots like this as well - I won’t get rich anytime soon, but the finds spark intrigue and discussion, and there’s always the chance of beautiful coins that no longer exist in modern currency such as the kangaroo pennies (we stopped using them in the 1960’s). The auto lite plate was confirmed to be an old automotive generator plate, which is seriously cool. Cheers! 😊

The dinosaur spill was a fun little end to the day! I do get fairly fatigued after filming a beach hunt, as the filming aspect means that everything drags out a little longer than detecting off-camera. Wouldn't have it any other way, though - it's so fun to take folks on a journey. Cheers mate.

Hi Mish. I tried to do some digging to find out about your tag that you found for the Auto Lite System. It could possibly go to a voltage regulator like you mentioned, or a headlight. The only other mention of an Auto Lite System is for an electric starter for a car from 1915. Hope that helps. John

Hi Mish. If you feel good with it, offer some of your finds to your volunteer museum. They know so much and are grateful to be able to display old coins buttons medals whatever, but these are the people who have the ability to get permissions for you to detect historical properties and private and public sites not usually accessible to metal detectorists. Just a thought. I get the thrill out of finding not possessing and the liason with people who get their rocks off on local history is invaluable. Also I am pissed. Sorry
@DirtFishMish Жыл бұрын
I’ve developed some wonderful friendships and connections through this hobby, including passionate local historians. Part of my displaying these finds in videos is exactly that - telling a piece’s story to the world rather than simply stuffing it in a box. No worries about your disclaimer there 😂 have a great weekend mate.
