Gunjan, @ 12:20 after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5 5.Bxf7+ Ke7 you say that there are two squares that the white bishop can move to--6.Bd5 and 6.Bb3. However, you are ignoring white's strongest reply--6.Bc4! After 6.Bc4! how would you continue as black? If 6...Bxf2?? then 7.Kxf2 Rf8 8.Kg1 h6 9.Nf3 Nxe4 and white's king has reached safety and black is down a full piece! If 6...Rf8 then 7.O-O Qe8 8.Nc3 h6 9.Nf3 d6 10.Be2 and white's king has reached safety and his pieces are developed and well coordinated. White will have no problem defending his king and continuing his development after 11.d3. Black on the other hand has a very tiny compensation of a half-open f-file and an aggressively placed bishop on c5 aiming at white's f2 square. Black is still down very nearly a full pawn. In my opinion this move 6...Rf8 offers black insufficient compensation for the pawn. If 6...d6 then 7.Nc3! and it seems that black is down a full pawn without any compensation whatsoever. For example, suppose black tries a move like 7...Qe8 then there follows 8.Nd5+ Nxd5 9.exd5 Qg6 10.dxc6 Qxg5 11.O-O Qh4 gives white a clear advantage. One last move worth considering might be 6...Qe8!? followed by 7.c3 d6 but it still remains to be seen if black can obtain sufficient compensation the pawn. What do you think?

Max Euwe recommended (for white) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5 5.Bxf7+ Ke7 6.Bb3! As you mentioned, 6...d6 and probably play 7.d3 or 7.Nc3 after 7...h6 white plays simple 8.Nf3 One pawn up, misplaced black king, small advantage for white, correct ?

hey Gunjan, great video over here, but i have a question, i played a line like that in a blitz game recently and my opponent destroyed me (at the position at 6:22) with the move pawn to d6 ... what do we do about that (okay my opponent was 2000+ and i am a lousy 1450 but) - the resulting position was so bad at this point, what if opponents play stuff like that

JS I have since played a different line that works well but is very sharp. 9...Qxd6 10. Nf7 Qc5 11. d3 b5. Computer says 11...b5, e4, bh4 are all good with a slight edge for white ~.7. I love playing the Traxler, I catch a lot of people with it, it has worked very well for me.

That is why I give my move 10...Qe7! an exclamation point because it is the only good move that gives black approximately equal chances.

JS I believe you are wrong here because 11. h3 is not a good move. Computer plays 11. c3 Bg4 12. Qa4+ Nc6 13. Ng5 and black is in trouble. Qe7 (certainly not with an !) may be rated better by the computer after 25 moves, but Qc5 is sharper and contains more tricks. White must play precisely with it. The traxler gambit itself is unsound, but because its so sharp, it works. Just don't try it against a 2500 rated computer.

It seems that with best play, white is better or even winning. However, it is not too much of a tragedy- black still has a lot of play, and white has to find extremely accurate moves to maintain his advantage. The 5.Bxf7+ line would be psychologically more annoying as black gets little activity and white has a solid plus.
