I have been a critical care nurse for 25 years and in the past have had a travel company. You are correct In your analysis but not easy at all. Very very difficult. You forgot to mention getting paid from hospitals. many hospitals take 45 to 90days to get paid. It is very difficult to get hospital to answer you and sign off on your contract and many times has to go through legal review.

I was starting up my LLC based upon this Nomad Nurse video and I saw this info on the nursing site Bluepipes. It states RNs working in hospitals typically will not meet the IRS definition of an independent contractor, so we cannot exclude the travel nurse agency after all: __________________________________________________________ Do travel nurses qualify as independent contractors? According to the IRS: The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not what will be done and how it will be done. The main focus here should be on the part of this statement that says, “payer has the right to control only the result of the work…” Note the emphasis added on “only.” Free: Universal Job Application and Credential Management for travelers. The IRS also states the following: You are not an independent contractor if you perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done). This applies even if you are given freedom of action. What matters is that the employer has the legal right to control the details of how the services are performed. In the case of nurses and the vast majority of allied health workers much more than just the outcomes of work are controlled by the contracted facility. For example, in the case of travel nurses, the hospital will determine the hours worked as well as break times. The nurse will be using supplies and equipment belonging to the hospital. In addition, there are managers and doctors at the hospital who are supervising the nurse’s work. Moreover, nurses must seek the permission of a physician for decisions outside the nurse’s scope of practice which is a frequent occurrence. Unfortunately, these factors, taken a a whole, will disqualify someone as an independent contractor. __________________________________________________________ Let me know what your experience was. Thanks

I've been trying to do this but most hospitals have exclusive contracts with the MSP's and vendors and you will get road blocked when trying to do this. From what I'm gathering is that this mostly works in smaller rural hospitals that are not part of large corporate hospital systems.

Yes, large hospitals(+400 beds) hire agency nurses for emergent staffing shortages and they expect the agency recruit, check employment requirements(e.g. license, background check). Also, there is a "liability " issue that an agency is "qualified" to operate in the state as a registered nurse agency.

A lot of nurses and CNAs are leaving hospitals n LTC over the forced vax. So, either nursing shortage will continue to get worse, healthcare facilities will have to raise the pay to super high hourly rate or more nurses will start their own business to escape the madness. Great video.

It was a very informative video about the bill rates from a travel nurse perspective. I never thought in a million years, you could work independently as a LLC. Most travel nurse companies that I worked in the past were pretty good with the compensation packages. I talked about other travel nurses about trying to get a greater percentage getting a greater percentage of my hourly wage.

Glad I came across this tonight after spending virtually all day with 4 different recruiters by phone and email. I've been quite disheartened after the long winded pay breakdowns and travel packages, and the worst is always saved for last: the stipend. After a while it all started sounding like a car dealership or worse.. pimping. That's how it is feeling to me. I keep turning down these assignments because one glaring aspect of it is just wrong that cancels out all the good.

This video is how I've been thinking every time I get a contract. I'm doing a nightshift while the agency people are in bed and they're parasites to my skills and mugging me legally. That said, it's not as easy as this video makes out to start a staffing company. There's a lot of massive companies that have got firm grips on a lot of facilities so it's hard to breakthrough unless you have friends who are in HR or directors of departments etc. Just my two pennies worth.

This video is misleading. It fails to disclose that the 25%-35% agency piece of the pie is gross profit, not net profit. Out of that piece, an agency has fixed and variable costs that whittle that piece down substantially: office space, liability insurance, workman's comp, payroll taxes, labor costs, supplies, education and training, background checks and drug screens, physicals, vaccinations, etc. etc. etc. The biggest lie told, ad nauseum, about staffing and travel nurse agencies is that they don't do any work and that they make "all" they money. Nothing could be further from the truth. Also, more and more hospitals are moving to MSP's to manage their labor needs - yes, even rural ones. You will be hard pressed to find a hospital you can just walk in to and get a contract as an independent nurse contractor. Their exclusive MSP contracts prevent such a thing from happening. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying it's not as easy as this video makes it sound.

I asked you a question about a month ago re. cutting out the middle man (agency) so your last 2 videos were very informative! My wife will probably still go through an agency for her first couple assignments just to get a feel for traveling, but this looks to be a viable option. 401k is easy enough to substitute with an IRA, but health insurance might be a bit headache...should be worth it though. You are leaving out a lot of expenses with you own company. There is malpractice insurance, business liability insurance, health insurance, no paid time off, no sick pay, no benefits at all, as a single owner LLC, you do all the work yourself. You haves to still pay rent, food, travel. And as the nursing shortage isn't as bad as it was in the 80's and 90's, there are fewer and fewer travel jobs. Many hospitals with not use travel nurses at all. When I traveled, I was paid higher than the area market, my rent was included in my contract, I received paid vacation time, paid sick days, health insurance was included, utilities were included regarding my apartment, they paid for the rental furniture. I traveled with my dog and they paid the pet deposit as well. So there is so much you are leaving out.
