I was in the US ARMY 11B on reforger 84 somewhere in a field on maneuvers and some one had this on cassette and it fit the time perfectly cause we were fixing to go back to the states and I was going on Christmas leave in 2 weeks. I was 19 and going home for2 weeks. The 80’s were great and I will never forget being young in that decade.

African-American guy pushing 60 (1/4 Irish. ) When I was a kid everybody sang Auld Lang Syne at New Year’s Eve. And I mean everybody! The Irish, the Italians, The Puerto Ricans, the African Americans, The Polish. you know everybody. And the ball drop in New York city Times Square which is probably about an hour away from where I’m living right now in New Jersey, they used to play that song on the television. Doesn’t happen anymore. People have forgotten this song. Not a big Scottish community where I’m living at.

Big Country has a sound like none other. Stuart Adamson's voice on Steel Town gives me chills. Mark Brzezicki's drumming sounds like rushing water from a waterfall. I believe this band was The Pacific Northwest sound before Seattle even imaged flannel and guitars that sounded like bagpipes.

I had these guys from my country & city (apart from the bassist who was from England) play nearly every year at some venue holding the Hogmanay Festivities of Ringing In The Bells... I watched them live many times but watching them on Hogmanay just before the Bells rang in another New Year was something special... Sometimes Runrig (a scottish Gaelic Rock Band) would do it also... Usually it was a Scottish band & no matter how cold or wet when these guys played you forgot about the weather & sang your heart out with hundreds of other revellers... We are fast becoming a society that is not social able & doesn't share actual live events together but instead many are so addicted to their mobiles & laptops that they've forgotten how to properly socialize & especially at the New Year... I know that since we can practically buy alcohol nearly 24/7 7 days a week it has taken the shine off of celebrating the ringing of the the bells but it doesn't have to be like this & I'm glad I'm not one of those who haven't made memories to treasures by going out & socialising... I miss these bands playing Live either at the Glasgow Barrowlands or George Square & as I said they were at time book especially to ring in the new year & although Stuart's gone there are still many great Scottish bands from this era & onwards that can still play Live brilliantly & it'd be nice to have a Scottish Band play just before the Bells again as those were great memories... I had seen Big Country/Texas/Del Amitri/Runrig/Hue & Cry/The Average White Band & all the great Scots bands but when they played leading up to the Bells it was so moving & I hope we have something like this lined up for this year as Scotland is a huge destination point at Hogmanay & I'd love to see some great bands of old & new ring the bells... So Here's To All For 2020 Sláinte Alba .....
