Very cool Dan! Nice acquisitions. I used to have a Mantua B&O pacific as well. Currently refurbishing some mantua Pacifics and mikados

I learned early in the mid 1980's not to buy Bachmann engines, as I had purchase a few of them and they never lasted over 1 year before the split gears occurred. So split chassis and split gears were Bachmann's trademark. Now they are displays down a cliff as a wrecked engine. From then on, I was an Athearn addict. I have that version of the Tyco/Mantua Pacific 4-6-2 but I stripped off the paint and painted it black along with another one of these Pacific's & decaled them for the Central of Georgia. Cheers from eastern TN

Hey Dan, I have an older Tyco B&O set in blue boxes, the engine has blue drivers and the tender is all metal and has blue trucks, the passenger cars are longer than the later Tyco cars, I believe my set is a 1959 set when Gilbert was making the cars for Tyco, The short you have could be the side rods touching the insulated wheel rims

@@joezuccardo3245 very nice! I believe that is the issue as well.

The one chassis you got with the speaker in it is made by a brand called Modeltronics and Model Power collaborated with them to make that (hence why they use the model power tooling). That would have been a Sharknose, I have a D&H pair of Modeltronics sharks with the original box.

I have the same B&O Pacific with the matching normal run passenger cars in my collection, also. It's not a red box set like yours, and it was pieced together with Ebay purchases. As far as the locomotive itself, it looks like the drive rods are shorting out against the drive wheels. The rods may be too close to the drive wheels, or the drive wheels are shifting too far over in the curve shown in the video causing them to touch the rods. As far as the Bachmann sound, they may be using sound directly injected into the rails. This concept isn't new, and it has been employed many years ago as a concept. It basically works by injecting the AC signal (sound) into the rails with a capacitor on the sound device and a capacitor on the speaker. Since AC will pass through a capacitor, but not DC, this allows the sound to be imposed over the DC power without it getting into the sound generator. It's a quite unique, but a simple way of getting sound into locomotives. Of the quality of the sound is only as good as the generating source.

@@casstelles thank you for the info! I’ve always been curious about how exactly it worked

That speaker chassis does kind of sound like the whine of a locomotive turbo if you ignore the popping. Maybe it sounds better if it's muffled by a shell.

The speaker chassis is model power shark nose chassis. Model power made dc analog sound shark noses for a little bit.

Do you have any of the old pre built/lit tyco buildings like the factory or church in your collection? Or even the tyco building kits like the movie theater or drugstore?

Is the sound supposed to be a horn or prime mover noise

That Modeltronics board is pretty fascinating. Here's a link to a guy showing his off. Apparently there’s two potentiometers on one side of that board to control the sound effects. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYfEaKuad9h6gc0si=6oAaXQrXAL_YXjo_
