A QVC home shopping channel presenter trying to live demo the "Fixinator9000", while having no idea what it actually does, so spends his segment padding out with terrible imaginary situations where you might actually need this thing. I have a collection of old bearing cages, use them as press tooling for pushing bearings home. Rather than grinding them, and maybe possibly getting enough clearance, I slit them with a cutoff disk (y'know, one of them new-fangled erosion jobbies). Deburr afterwards, obvs. Gives you enough flex to get them on / off ./ in / out easily. Pulling bearings in using the mounting hardware works, and is less violent than letting a twunt like Del bash at the bearing with the side of his hammer, but it does pull through the actual bearings (OK in most cases as you're not going to be pulling that hard), and if you overdo it can fuck the balls / rollers totally due to overtightening. I suspect del would be more likely to fuck a bearing that way than with a hammer, actually. I have to give him a certain amount of credit, though. He did use a c spanner on the nut rather than twonking on it with a screwdriver and hammer.

What I don’t understand is why he feels it’s acceptable to try and teach people how to do it in a way that will cause damage. Surely the best way to do this is to get the right tools for the job, explain to them how to use it properly and let them know what the cost is to do buy the tools and do it properly. It’s just madness. If someone has the confidence to strip their bike down that far, they should really be doing it properly not butchering the crap out of it.

With the lower race install, i cut the old one vertically with a grinder, and after cleaning the burr off i use it as a drift. Also when i drive it in, rather than hammer the race, i insert the stem in something with a big enough hole with the old race sitting flat on said hole, i simply (plastic) hammer the triple clamp down and hey presto no damage, and square. That damage was actually hard to watch
@garfunkle1873 жыл бұрын
I would put the cups in the freezer and then either tap them in with a brass drift or make in an impromptu press with threaded rod and some big washers to suck them in. Or if I had a brain injury I'd grease them up and knock them in with the side of a screwdriver. Also, using claw hammers for mechanical work makes me cringe, even more when you use the side of it.

1:01:21 That might work but I imagine in some cases the threads might not be long enough to do that. However before you start, consider the application these bearings are used for. In this case the load would be pretty light as compared to the load capacity of those bearings. That means they will be designed with a light interference fit. The pressing force will he far below the axial capacity of these bearings thus it would be safe to use this technique. In some applications the bearing might require a tighter interference based on expected loads. Then I’m not sure I would use this method of pressing the seats on through the bearing itself. But in a case like this it would be totally fine. I have used this method to seat a spindle bearing in my dividing head for my milling machine when I was rebuilding it. Worked like a charm. In the cases of both the steering of a motorbike and the spindle of a dividing head stiffness is more important and will result in oversized bearings. Expected loads in use are never going to come close to the capacity of these bearings. Hence the light interference fit rather than a heavy one. Side note: only applicable to bearings that can take thrust loads, not recommended for deep groove ball bearings.

If there is no symptoms you might need a bearing according to Del. Thats why I always cange my wheelbearings in my car every day, because no symtoms and I might still need it :D :D :D :D Is there not a greasefitting to thoes bearings? I'd changed the seal, gotten rid of the rust and repacked and reused the bearings but thats beacause I'm a poor guy... I would have seen the notches that Del saw and used my bearing puller. If I was Del I'd use the claw on the clawhammer because way f easier than tappi tap tap... The comment about the parts in the packets I never thought about it because I've never had time to wank around with the parts. I I get them I keep them in because why would I mess with them out of the packets, who has the time? Time I could spend watching youtube and writing long comments. Tip to Del is a block of wood instead of everything else in his garage? Now I own a rubber hammer but I'd probably started the bearing and if there is no lockspring I'd use the "screw" to let it pull it self together but thats because I'm lazy even if that also saves time. But Yes that's someone that cant use a hammer and messes up surfaces where bearings sit. People that used side of the hammer are afraid of using it correctly. Side of a hammer often have a bigger surface. I would have done the same as Del with the grease but with a cople of drops of chainsaw oil or oil or some spray so you get some somewhere glideage, every bit helps. Main pont in my case is always cheap, fast and lazy.
