Inside a Bait Fish Trap (Bream / Perch / Sunfish /Pinfish)
I took a bait fish trap with me bass fishing this morning. I set out this bream trap or perch trap for about an hour and a half while I went out fishing. Although I didnt catch a ton of bait fish, I got some decent footage using my GoPro inside the trap. This perch trap is not yet for sale on our site, www.reeltexasoutdoors.com.

Put a zip tie on the end that does not have the clip. You will never have to worry about it coming apart or losing part of it. kzbin.infoUgkxxvthjLYk8bJwhOkjNsLvPwnSKZmnHeT1 The diameter of the holes are about 2 1/2". They can still get out if there is no bait in the trap. You can also use a zip tie to keep the bait in place. I use a can of Sardines in oil with hole punched in it wired to the bottom and then loose Chicken or fish. This keeps them there longer, but if left long enough the trap will be empty. I learned this the hard way. I threw the trap in and watched it aMost fill up. Like a dummy, I got greedy, when I came back in an hour, all were gone except four. Good buy for the money!

I also build traps. I'm a huge fan of your work. The only thing I have to say about horizontal openings is that I end up with a lot more young turtles. Keep on trapping!

Thanks for the comment, I sincerely appreciate it. To be honest, this is the only trap I have ever built with horizontal openings. I have built thousands of traps with vertical, but I still have this one to date. It’s not very practical for fish, but it isn’t bad for crawfish and other things that crawl up the ramps. Overall, it’s an okay trap, but I would not recommend it for fish exclusively. I have not caught any turtles in it however I don’t typically use it very much either. I'm getting ready to build a cloverleaf perch trap. I was wondering something; what if you put the bait and bait holders in two of the corners? It seems to me like having it in the middle would be very inviting for them to be able to escape the trap real quick. Just a thought.

Thanks man, and great question. Catching game fish in a trap is illegal in Texas, but not everywhere (they can run hoop nets in Louisiana). In Texas though these sunfish/perch/bluegill (whatever you'd like to call them) are not considered game fish. Thanks for checking out the vid... have a great one!

Hi Darla... thanks for the comment. in this video I am using dry dog food as bait. The cheaper the dog food the better as the cheaper stuff generally has a high fat content (oily). Dry dog food is one of the best baits for bream and sunfish for sure. Hope this info helps some, best of luck!

Depends on the trap, purpose, and environment it's being used. We use anything from 1/2 by 1/2 in 19 gauge on up... this one was 1/2 x 1/2 in 19 gauge though.

How your entry points are horizontal you should put a little vertical in there to so the entrance is more like a dimond shape

Thanks for the comment... we don't sell this trap on our site. It was more of an experiment to see if one trap would be good for bluegill and crawfish. However, I totally agree... a vertical entry point is the only way to do bait fish traps well. Thanks again for the comment.

The last supper. My dogs are crazy AF and would follow that food down.Their food is 100.00 a bag. Im definitely not using that. What brand were you using? That food held together nice. I have chum bags. Would that be better?

Hi Jeff. Thanks for the comment. Chum bags would work fine. Use the cheapest dog food you can find. Fish don't care, haha. Usually, the cheaper stuff has a higher fat content.... which is not soluble in water. That's generally what I would use.

I used zip ties when I make em. Instead of cutting them I weave the end into the trap so I don’t get cut on the sharp ends.

Hey man, thanks for the comment. In this video I was using regular (cheap) dry dog food for bait. Once it gets wet it will expand and hold inside the trap pretty well. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again!

Im confused by your comment. Is it implying that the fish were placed inside the trap? Ive made one trap to date with horizontal openings, and this is the one in the video. It was an experiment for fun, but it clearly caught the fish. I would use this trap now only in certain situations, for like crawfish. It's not ideal for bait fish.

gRa F - thanks for the comment. My great grandfather’s grandfather used cloverleaf style traps… So I don’t know of anyone who could take claim to designing them. I built hundreds of these a year. However, this one in the video is actually the only one of this kind I have ever built… (with ramps in the horizontal doors). So although it is not a totally new design, I don’t know of any others exactly like it out there. I probably build more traps than about 99.9% of everyone in the United States… and this is the only one like this I’ve ever made. I hope this info helps some. Thx man.
