This very interesting engine is in my Dacia stepway. After 116 K the engine still runs like new. In fact I decided to buy the car back in 2019 due to the strong und lasting timing chain inside the engine. It is not common knowledge that Renault is the best engine builder. It's because the French are the best engineers worldwide. They have other brains than we have...the Citroen DS proves it. The "Antoinette" aero engine designed in 1906 (it had fuel injection and made all flying positions possible) is another prove of their skills.

I've had 2 Clios with this 90 HP engine and performance and economy were quite good. However, the 110 HP version of the same engine in my Twingo GT is far superior and delivers performance similar to a 1980s hot hatch. when it says 25% less consumption, thats only because they have removed one cylinder...
@magna599 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Gee As I understand it , there is a decrease in internal friction if the capacity / cylinder is kept at a decent size . I am lead to believe , that 50% of energy was lost , because of the piston vectoring itself hard into the wall of the cylinder , directed by the con rod . The figure seams very large , but reducing the number of cylinder to increase the surface area & reduce pressure into the wall seams like a good compromise . I would like to see the use of boxer formats & scottish yokes ............ but engineerings are very conservative & marketing departments don ' t want to scare the horses . I think Renaullt do some impressive design work , but the temptation to get it under a bonnet & out on the street before all the bugs have been layer to rest , and into dealerships who are under trained & pressure then gets the kit a bad name . I hope their link with Nissan ( notable for BM grade engineering , not very original , but very reliable , but at a good price ) , may have good results in this are ability to keep it on the road . Same diesel has a soot problem , that combination , to take thermal advantage would be good .

Renault has the top engines in the world right now. Anyone who says they are bad, either hasn't got a clue, tries to make himself interesting by hating french cars, or sucks the german companies cock. You can have a different opinion on whether they are the best, everyone has his preferences, but to say that Renault are bad is just plain stupid. Peugeot is also great with diesels, but Renault has both diesels and petrols. And germans, they are shitty money pits right now, only Mercedes is good. BMWs, you need to buy a second car to have spares, because it's cheaper to buy another than keep repairing your own. VW, awesome petrols for the first 50 000km. And then, the oil ring will clog up, seize the engine and break the piston. Diesels are shitty from the first moment they switched to common rail. It's all crap, even their build quality is crap. Look for the Top gear episode where Rory tries the VW Arteon's automatic braking accident protection s26e5. A reputable company that has existed for a 100 years are LYING about SAFETY. They lied about the emissions to keep an edge over the others but even then they were worse. Renault have had one of the best safety ratings in the last 25 years. French cars are a hundred times better in the moment, and that is coming from me, a guy who owned german cars at first. Since I got my Laguna coupe, I am reborn with engine responsiveness, ride quality, noise insulation, and best of all, no breakdowns. The car is comfortable like a Mercedes and handles like an Alfa Romeo.
@steven-vn9ui4 жыл бұрын
Agree with you on the German car hype - they are shite. Having owned a vehicle with the 0.9 tce I can say the engine is a nice little performer, smooth, quiet and flexible. However economy was quite poor. I have driven many cars for the last 27 years and know how to drive economically and pride myself on being frugal with fuel but this engine beat me. Maybe I just had a bad unit in the car I had?
@NSB254454 жыл бұрын
@@steven-vn9ui You probably don't have a bad unit, you have a heavy foot. All of the small engines with turbo are bad with economy when you are driving fast. If you are conservative with your foot and you drive smoothly, you'll get the mpg they promise. It's the same as my fathers Peugeot 508 RXH diesel hybrid. It claims that it uses 4 liters per 100km, but when you drive properly it uses 7 liters per 100. But if you drive like a grandma, you'll get the promised economy. Small engines are a scam for city and twisty roads, but on highways they are pretty frugal.
@steven-vn9ui4 жыл бұрын
@@NSB25445 Appreciate your comment, however, I am very easy on my cars. Clutches, tyres, brakes all last an age as does my fuel in every other car I have owned. I see you are very passionate and that is a good thing but I must stick to my findings, weather on the motorway or in town it failed to impress. I have been happy with the 1.0l 3 cyl offered by PSA - I average 54mpg currently with a mix of town motoray 75/25 percent roughly. And yes I know it has no where near the power of the tce but on the other hand it is very simple to service and repair if needed. All the best and safe driving!

So why are the cylinders offset from the crankshaft?
@wisecountryman496 жыл бұрын
Tu reduce vibration! A 4 cylinder has a 90 degrees crank stroke, while a 3 cylinder has 120 degrees crank stroke. They could have used a balancing shaft but that's expensive and adds weight. Ford was the first manufacturer who came up with this ideea, to offset the crank, at it's 3 cylinder engines, and worked perfectly.

Good explanation - BMW made a 3 cylinder for their motorcycle, a 750cc which was the 1000cc with one lopped off, and they used a balancer shaft, to make it like a turbine - actually, felt boring. This looks like a good way to avoid doing the balancing, and having what I think is called a Hi-Vo toothed chain-substitute, is obviously good, having just done the cambelt on the older Clio. Been in the new 3-cylinder one, it's bigger, being about 2" wider, 2.5" longer, and I would guess a little heavier. The engine, just sounds smooth and pulls ok from what I saw, I guess you keep it above 1700rpm to keep it comfortable, but good drivers just adjust for the machinery they are using at the time? No good saying an RS turbo doesn't pull low-down with a family and luggage, sort of thing. This is a nice design, interesting the alternative diesel one they retain 4 pots for, and it is 1500cc, and still gives 66mpg real-world (honestjohn) and this petrol 3 gives 46mpg real-world. It will leave room for a Honda-style electric motor/generator to go on the end?!

Well Kevin, that depends, for example the new Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 125hp 3 cylinders vs new Focus but the normal 1.6 version 4 cylinders, the 3 cylinders has a huge advantage, ok it has a turbo but is a low pressure turbo and it's only a 1.0, and accelerations are better than the 1.6. That use to be before when you had 3 cylinder cars with only 55 or 65hp. but even the 4 cylinders used to be like that, 50, 60hp, for example a 1.4 engine with 4 cylinders and only 60hp.

In this engine a turbine is placed in the exhaust gasses and the recovered energy is used to increase the inlet pressure. But the energy of the turbine can also be coupled back on the crankshaft (compound engine) in which case there is an important decrease in fuel consumption of about 6-7%. I wonder why this construction is not used in light engines. Perhaps the construction of the engine would become to expensive but I don't really know. Anybody an answer?
@sorinsorin59523 жыл бұрын
Because in this way (exhaust placement) you can reach very high RPM for the turbine to compress the air. If is attached to the crankshaft you get only the engine RPM which is nota enough.

El par es el de un motor Nissan, también 1.600, de mediados de los ´90, del que tengo buenos recuerdos, solo que el TCe 90 lo ofrece a menos régimen. This is the worst engine i have ever seen. I have Renault Clio IV 2013 with this H4B engine. I was driving to work one day and the timing chain tensioner failed and destroyed the whole engine. The car has ONLY done 147tkm with services done on time. Of course manufacturer does not cover any costs over the manufacturing fault. Stay away from Renault.
@clauditzu025 жыл бұрын
You should have changed the timing chain when you started to hear the chain making sounds, it s your fault.
@ticklishlawyer25 жыл бұрын
_Mr.Claudiu_ Well the chain did not make any sound and its not the chain that failed its the tensioner. Also in the service plan there is no recommendation to change the timing chain or tensioners ever.
@Steven3D88883 жыл бұрын
@@ticklishlawyer2 Hi, I know it's a 2 year old comment but just out of curiosity, how much did they charged you for repairing the chain tensioner? Did it needed a new engine or did you get rid of the car? Thanks
@ticklishlawyer23 жыл бұрын
@@Steven3D8888 Dealer said they wont’t cover anything because the car was just over warranty. I opened the broken engine and it was just too expensive to repair, all valves bent etc. I bought a used replacement engine for the car and changed it myself.
@Steven3D88883 жыл бұрын
@@ticklishlawyer2 Thanks for the reply, it's so typical that something breaks down just after warranty... Nice skill that you could replace the engine yourself, saves a lot of money! Hopefully you have more luck with the new engine, I assume it's the same type. Cheers

Sorry, but no car should have less than 4 cylinders. I would never buy a car with an unbalanced engine. Best choice is an inline 6.
@tomneuteleers60387 жыл бұрын
best choice is a v12 ;)
@wisecountryman495 жыл бұрын
In Europe, we can't aford 6 cylinder engines, not just because of expensive fuel, but also because of high tax on big engines. Also a 3 cylinder sounds better than 4 when reved. It has a more pronunced rumble. I own this engine, and at first I was surprised to see that is faster tham a 1.6 aspirated. Mpgs are awsome. But it may not have a long life. You can't have them all.

Unbalanced? Uneven numbers are the best. Your straight six fires in 3 pairs, slightly offset but 3 pairs. Uneven doesn't require balance shafts or other mechanical lumps to equal out the vibration
@MrTiti5 жыл бұрын
@@derf9465 a line 6 is the only engine that has zero vibration. you are correct: zero is less than the vibration of a V8

Had this on a rental car : utter junk. To be fair, the whole car was junk. It's sad that Renault got trapped into that niche of cars for old retired people lacking taste. They have the capabilities to produce decent cars, given their experience in F1 and all but seem to have dropped even the idea of producing good cars and challenging German brands.
