I discovered an interesting find while restoring our clawfoot tub finding the original branding so I can determine the age it was made! A nice way to keep the original integrity of the home by keeping this clawfoot in the bathroom.

I love the copper on the outside idea too!!!! It would enhance the "old timey age" look of the tub. Because way back when in days gone by, copper was used for all sorts of household things, so having the outside of this tub be copper like the entryway ceiling, in my opinion would showcase this tubs age and look great....and yes..shiny black feet! Not sure if they've already purchased (cannot remember) the sink to go into that "vanity" but a copper sink would tie together the room - warm glow in an evening bath too!

My brother hauls these tubs out of farm fields, sand blast and refinishes them with a commercial spray. I had him look at your video and said use a HEAT GUN! Also said there are no visible chips or stains so do not refinish or you will be redoing it in 5 years. The blue was a color back then like a Tiffany blue!

careful with messing with the feet of the tub, when you go to do anything with them be sure to attach them well to the tub. we use to have one and our very tiny daughter sat on the edge of the tub while getting into it and a leg fell off of the tub and it tipped over and busted off the pipes, thank goodness it didn't hurt my daughter.

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your family ❤ As I'm watching you explain that your sander is not reaching where the walls and the bottom of the tub meet, I'm thinking that Amazon has a portable sandblasting gun that MIGHT work, for those rounded spaces... just food for thought and I totally get your desire to bring everything back, to it's former glory 💪💪🙏🙏 I'm glad you're pacing yourself Elysia and have a wonderful evening!

I think a sage green with gold or copper feet. Green is such a relaxing color, especially if you add plants. Maybe copper ceiling. They make wallpaper that looks like old ceiling tiles. Paste it and it should hold. Then paint it copper.

You can buy a cheap compressor equipment and still be ahead and use quartz sand, while learning to sandblast. It’s not hard I helped my brother back in the 80s with his car that we sandblasted. We took all the paint off the car down to metal.

Try using a Bremell or something similar to do the tight areas maybe. I spent a month doing my bathtub, 20 yrs ago, and it’s stood the test of time. I painted mine on the outside with Hammerite gun metal grey with gold feet. I loved mine when l did it and I still love it today, nothing nicer then laying back in a deep old tub and relaxing. Good luck in your endeavour.

We bought a small sandblaster to remove the paint and imperfections from our thirty-one foot 1961 Cris Craft steel hulled roamer boat. It was work but it did a fabulous job. The cost for the small sandblaster wasn't too bad either. Sometimes you can find them from people who bought them for a job and no longer want them. Best of luck to you and Phillip.

As long as it is smooth, don't kill yourself trying to remove the paint. There is a good chance that the reason it was painted was to cover chips and scratches in the original paint. You will NEED a warm bath after all the scrubbing. Time to head over to Mum and Dad's house lol

I think the blue color is the original first coat. The white is the top coat of paint, and the yellowish color is the glaze like layer they put on it to finish it. The yellowish color is probably because the years and years of dirt stains in that layer of glaze.

The bluish color you see is not paint, it’s the original finish of the tub. I refinished mine in our cottage before we moved it in our new house and back then, doing it myself it lasted about 10 years and then I resanded just the parts where the paint was doing little bubbles and kept it for another few years. Hubby had sanded it and the I finished it with a kit that had epoxy in it, the more epoxy, the stronger the finish will be, what I am seeing from the white original finish which you saw like bluish, if it all comes out like that, you might want to try it out as is and refinish the outside and see if it would be ok. Back then using the best refinish kit and all we did to it had cost us around $300, 2 coats, which was a lot for about 25 years ago. If you cannot sand all the paint out, try a paint stripper, let it 15 Ro 20 minutes to bubble and then scrap with a plastic trowel so not to scratch the original finish. Good luck.

The old claw foots are and we had 3 boys back then and in a pinch could fit all 3 in for a bath if needed. Thinking you might need one of those foam sanding pads for the curved places know they work on curved wood surfaces.

The finish I believe ended up being lacquer its a tough finish to remove. Some projects take along time.
