I'd love for you to think about adding Alex the Terrible and Justin Bonitz to a second waze of artist if you can. Alex has an amazingly deep and powerful voice that he can fill a show without a mic. I work with children that have all the other relative means to speak, and the understanding etc, but can't form the words, they're just able to make the 'sound' of the words. When everything else is present and correct as it were, why does the vocabulary fail. It's super interesting!

ladies and gentlemen, we've done it. we turned Elizabeth into a full blown metalhead. I'm not really a big fan of harsh vocals, but studies like this will legitimize that vocal technique as a singing style. and it's being spearheaded by a highly trained opera singer, how awesome is that. a lot of people used to think, oh that's just screaming any one can do that. studies like this will show the skill that it really takes to do it in a healthy way. as others have said this may possibly affect general speech pathology as well.

This research could help in other vocal and speech areas. Especially after vocal chord injuries surgeries, children who can't talk properly to see if their issues are to do with voice box, larynx, tongue etc. It's so interesting!

I loved hearing Tank say that listening to harsh vocals can be relaxing to him. I find it can be soothing at times. For me, it can cut though my anxiety and filter out the mental fog/static that fills my brain when I am stressed/anxious. If I need to concentrate on something, listening Jinjer keeps me focused. it sounds counter intuitive, but it works for me.

What really gets me excited about this is the possibilities for treatments to come out of it. She's better now, but my mom suffered from paralysis of the vocal cords for about 4 years. Studies like this might find alternative treatment options to literally give people their voices back... and that's amazing!

Wow, that's a great deal for those! I haven't donated yet, but I think I may have to. I am currently a student, but I'm going to mourn the loss of access to all the scholarly databases when I graduate. This could help appease my curiosity without the $30-50 price tag per paper I usually see.

Very cool project @TheCharismaticVoice and awesome that you bring it to light Tank. As a researcher I know how hard and it is to get funding and it is truly inspiring to see crowdfunded science take flight and be managed properly. Elizabeth mentioned it but didn't give it the importance it deserves. The fact that they're funding it through a nonprofit also means that they CAN share the raw data openly. Many funding agencies still won't allow that.

And so often the amount & types of academic research are limited to the entities who fund it, many times with ulterior motives to produce a specific outcome that benefits a particular company, product or other way to make the funding entity money. This study is so different & I’m super excited to support it.

@@denalindeif an individual or entity funds to have a project yield a certain result, it’s not academic research, it’s pseudoscience. The scientific method and the peer review process were literally designed to keep such fraud from happening.

I’ve been interested in extended vocal techniques for most of my life, and I was thrilled about this study when I first heard about it. There’s so much helpful info we’re gonna to get from it. I’m so glad it got funded and I hope it can hit some stretch goals!

It bring a tear to my eye that someone like her is doing this. She could very easily be an opera snob, but she got interested in the sounds and wanted to know "how." That's true respect for voice training. Hopefully developing kids can have a lesson plan at the endgame of this. Much love for this! As a socioeconomist that studies wellbeing, I always thought it would be fascinating to evaluate the wellbeing of touring musicians/crew members. It's a completely different way of life from the 9-5 routine, so it would be interesting to see how that impacts the welfare of those in the industry.

I love thinking of this study as studying the metal community in an anthropological way. We're studying how this language is made, naming it (Cookie Monster, pig squeal) so we can teach it to a younger generation, so the language can survive and evolve.

I hope they can add Mayu from Nemophila (Japan). She has unique, and instantly recognisable vocals and can switch seamlessly from harsh to clean, plus a few variations. I'll admit that I was never overly keen on harsh vocals until I discovered Mayu. Check out Dissension and Ama-te-ras if you haven't seen her perform, on Nemophila's channel.

Of all the music reactors I've heard, I think you might be the best interviewer. Most of the others get to a point where the conversation gets fairly comfortable, but I typically have to sit through some awkward pauses and clumsy questions in order to get to the more comfortable part. With this interview, you gave a great intro and then it was super comfortable with how you brought in Elizabeth and then immediately started asking good questions at a good pace and with the right amount of you adding your two cents as well. Kudos.

These singers have demonstrated staying power in what they do. Finding out how they do it is so important for many reasons but definitely one would be to help people do it in a healthy way. Between vocal issues with doing those things improperly and hearting loss issues personal physical health in the music industry has not always been something that has gotten a lot of attention. It can be a sensitive subject because if a singer lets on that they are having problems it can cause a perception that damages their reputation. Technology has been key in addressing many issues with hearing so now it's time to do the same with vocal issues.

The biggest thing I want to get out of this for me is learning a truly safe and sustainable way to do harsh vocals. I have learned how to do really distorted cleans (think Crawling by Linkin Park) and can do them all day from the lessons and tutorials I’ve seen. Because there is so much info for the regular vocal cords. I can do harsh vocals and they sound good, but I can tell from a short session that it’s not sustainable and I get mixed messages from online tutorials because no one really knows how it works

I was at a meet and greet with Jinjer, just yesterday and someone asked Tati about her participation in this study and then I see this video today. BTW, if you have the opportunity to and can afford it, I recommend everyone to get the VIP experience. It’s not like the typical meet and greet, where you are hearded by the band and get an autograph. You get to hear two songs in sound check, hang out with the band on stage for about 15 minutes, then have an autograph session and a professional photo taken with the band. The whole band is very friendly and will discuss almost anything with you

It is almost like a medical trial here where the larger the group, the better slice of singers can be depicted. So cool. I hope down the line we can find out the theories and practices that work with music/vocal therapy to help those of us with some sort of mental thing going on function better..

I mean you have all the different versions of "black metal" singing, all the kinds of different guttural vocals in various forms of death metal, all the metalcore and deathcore stuff, hardcore and whatever Jaari Maenpa from Wintersun does (with perfect enunciation and interchange between clean vocals and Rob Halford-like screaming).

I am so excited for this study. I have been following the Charismatic Voices work on harsh vocal research since the first video with Will. Tank - you did a great job allowing Elizabeth chance to clarify the purpose and the intent of the study. Thank you both for this video. I have recently been looking extensively into the nervous system and how conditions or malfunctions in it can affect our physical and mental health, so the end of this interview about sound and/or frequency being used as music therapy was fascinating. I wonder if it has to do with stimulation of the vagus nerve, which acts as a sensory or system reset?

A side effect from this that i dont know if people have brought up is band duration. Im not a musician, but i have favorite bands, its just natural. But less than perfect techniques can lead to bodies breaking, its natural across all types of work, but this can help keep vocalists in the game longer, and more music coming! I do hope she could get a black metal vocalist at some point, but im all for whoever they bring in

Just for some cultural diversity, and in order to study other forms of clean singing too, I'd love to see Elizabeth invite Jayant Bhadula, one of the two vocalists from the band Bloodywood. That man is an impressive clean singer in a rock style and also in traditional Indian music, and ALSO an impressive screamer.
