All universities to some extent are guilty of offering outdated course programmes, these outdated qualifications have little to no demand in the job market, but this one is worse. How can you offer a programme to thousands of students in a Sector that has been employing few people for over 20 years? I am also questioning, the quality and practicability of your solution? how certain are you that by giving students marketing skills certificates they will be able to sell themselves and get employed in a saturated market with no employment growth for 20 years? of course, this question goes to other qualifications.

South Africa is not producing that is a big issue, We need to introduce enterprenewership from Grade 10 as a default subject all subject streams.

You have touched a very sensitive issue where university graduates cannot obtain their certificates and cannot produce proof that they have passed exams. Thank you ndoda for the clarification and future action by the council. As parents we would like to see the success of the plan. This has given us a picture of what is happening at WSU in particular. With the involvement of Minister Blade Nzimande I am hopeful that things will shape up to the advantage of students. He has student interest in his heart.

i think the key issue here is that the economy has not grown enough for graduates to secure employment.the government should revisit it employment frameworks and focus on further developing the economy,as it stands it has failed to achieve economic growth for employment opportunities,they need to invite new chairs who are experts whose key roles would be to grow the economy in order to facilitate economic growth and development.

Yeah, that is true but even if there is economic growth in SA unemployment problem will still persist, South Africa has one of the highest minimum wages compared to its emerging economies counterparts, meaning Public and Private Enterprises can only afford to pay only a small portion of the population inorder to remain profitable, hence high unemployment and wealth gap, these high wages leads to multinational companies, like Apple to not move the production or invest here in South Africa due to the reason I mentioned above as well as technical skills required and political instability in this country, so they instead go to China/India because of very low minimum wages there and weak labour laws, even so, China has high graduate unemployment problem currently with Masters and Ph.D. graduates working as garbage guys so they make university entrance exams extremely difficult to reduce the flood of unemployed graduate and to fight unemployment as whole, even though they experienced an economic boom over the past decades. Another thing is South African or African economies are vastly different to western economies, in Mzansi as a well as any other African country, we have huge informal markets which supports lot of families, like the street vendors, taxi industry to name a few, these markets are worth billions and go unrecordnised by the standard metrics that used to track unemployment globally.

It is really sad cause we all went to school in hopes of becoming something I graduated in 2017 for Journalism and I couldn't get anything and I decided to go do something in Aviation in 2019 but still dololo I'm at home getting nothing and I apply every day...again when you finally think you've gotten something nyana the boss wants to sleep with you or you are gone yoh this world is cruel

Advocacy is not the issue in my opinion. Instituting adequate Policy changes that would allow entrepreneurs to thrive is the issue in my opinion. The state is murdering entrepreneurs. Terrible Tax legislative changes for example are the reason why people like Vusi Thembekwayo take their business to Dubai.

The ANC has always intended to produced beggars and never producers. Most youths are heavily reliant on the state and this is bad for a tax based economy. One level of sanctions will literally collapse government and the economy in South Africa because we are not self reliant economy.

Its said to be knowing of the challenges nowadays graduates suffers, may be the council should think of programs to cultivate responsibility over the students and do away from being overpowered by feeling of inadequacy to learn and understand the borrowed language, we were taught communication as a subject almost to all programs the WSU would offering then, we studied through WSU and graduated post year 2000 but can make sense when we speak and write in a borrowed language. 😅

Universities are unfortunately money making institutions. Enriching themselves. Crippling aspirant graduates to a brighter future out of lack & poverty. This negatively impacts the economy. Don't think it bothers them to change it anytime soon. People are not worried about the country but themselves ? Out of desperation people are selling & buying certificates for those they have no skills for, in particular in the mining section 🙄. That is how innocent people are killed by having unskilled employees in some disciplines. Corrupt HR practitioners. Sad sad sad SA others leave for greener pastures. Others depend on handouts...and cycle of lack continues with large amounts of unpaid university fees😢

Why can't there be jobs for people with matric and those with degrees. With the high Admission Point Scores required for degrees and Basic Education's 30% pass, some matriculants do not get university admission at all. Actually at some universities, their system even bars applicants based on an ID no entered.

A young person who receives a child grant until age 18, does not have electricity at home, studies with candle light in this rainy November and gets an NSC with APS 18 will not be admitted for a diploma, if employed can later be accepted for higher education studies based on RPL (recognition of prior learning) and his life and future will turn for the better. This means he has beaten many odds, whereas a graduate in this conversation stated how he went into marketing and sales because he could not get employment on completion of his engineering studies. So the one who was disadvantaged will be doomed for the rest of his life. I wish you could convince me with regard to 'graduates will create jobs'. Let me also ask 'what age group are these employed matrics?'

Let me share a story of a guy who passed what we called JC, i.e. Junior Certificate, studied for an N1 Motor Mechanic, employed by BMW plant in Rosslyn (he was under 21, his aunt had to sign for him to be employed), built BMWs and retired at age 60, if he had not been hired without a matric, would he have to be a runner, not sure if you know 'mochina' - before the lotto!!

@@deborahrakumakoe6602 ehh wena so you want us to reward low performing individuals over high performers?we all have 24 hours a day,its not always dark,it dsnt rain everyday.come on Madam you can do better than this...we can't have people with higher qualification at home while low performers are employed for being poor and are cheap labor..Look at what happened when Zuma came to office after Mbeki isn't that evident enough? during Mbeki graduates whr treasures of this country and we did very well economically while during Zuma a matric and political influence become the new engineering.if you need more examples look at the SABC, look at the last two Ceo who run SABC with Matrics.what happened?

@@stephencohen1362 Entrepreneurship and Business Management are two peas in a pod. Both qualifications are capable of enabling you to obtain a job in the Public or private sector or to create a start-up. The challenges are the lack of job opportunities, a saturated labour market and the difficulty of developing business ideas that are new or improve a certain aspect of society. So entrepreneurship is important, that where as youth we need to be directing our efforts, but it is very challenging, with many barriers to entry.

Employers are concerned about the quality of education, even with your degree programmes. Your University does not rank high at all. Furthermore Wits, UCT, Stellenbosch...have great career development centre's that prepare their graduates for employment, before they graduate. Collaborate with those universities...I'm sure they will be more than willing to help you improve the employability of their graduates. Issuing certificates despite debt is not really the problem. You have a bad reputation for many reasons and you must really buckle down on fixing those problems.
